Write a 2-3 page commentary on what your comparative text analytics have revealed in terms of
prominent keywords, topics, themes or other suggestive & significant aspects of the text. How
could what is revealed in the results of your text analysis contribute to the generation of an essay
topic? Describe a number of the research topics or directions you might pursue developed from
this data. If you work with texts you have already studied, do the Text Analytics quantitative
results reveal anything new or unexpected about the texts? How can quantitative data inform
interpretation? What are the limits of this mode of analysis? what do we not see in the context of
the text(s) analyzed? What further questions – hypotheses – might you develop for further
quantitative, computer-based textual analytics & testing?

As a final point of consideration, now that you have used Voyant and TaPOR, which website do
you find easier to use? does either set of tools or individual tools seem to produce better results?
are there aspects of the web design or tool design that you wish were different? Any thing that
you would want to improve tools & features?

Original Question Below:

Your essay MUST include reference to your listening as an integral part of your essay argument.

CHOOSE ONE TOPIC:

1. “The way people understand and appreciate music, what they find beautiful or ugly, mellifluous or cacophonous, is a product of culture, not something universal.” (Timothy Rice, 2004, Music in Bulgaria, p.32).

Discuss this comment in relation to one or more of the musics of the world studied in this subject.

2. “[The] ability to freely change and invent new meanings for music is an important source of its cultural, social and political power.” (Timothy Rice, 2004, Music in Bulgaria, p.85).

Discuss this comment in relation to one or more of the musics of the world studied in this subject.

3. In a 1990 article, Appadurai comments that we have moved into “a new global cultural economy – a complex, overlapping, disjunctive order that cannot any longer be understood in terms of existing center-periphery models. (Arjun Appadurai, 1990, Disjuncture and difference in the global cultural economy, Public Culture, 2 (2): pp. 1-24).

Discuss how music is implicated in the “new global cultural economy.” In particular relate your discussion to one or more musics of the world studied in this subject.

4. Believing that man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun, I take culture to be those webs, and the analysis of it to be therefore not an experimental science in search of law but an interpretive one in search of meaning”. (Clifford Geertz, 1973, Thick description: Toward an interpretive theory of culture”, p. 5, in The Interpretation of Cultures, London: Hutchison, pp. 3-32 ).

Discuss Geertzs famous statement in relation to what you have learned about music in this subject.

5. Instead of treating non-Western societies as cultures from which data can be collected to support Western theories of cosmic order, fieldworkers [in ethnomusicology] recognise the different and equally valid worldviews held by different societies. (Barz and Cooley, “Casting shadows: Fieldwork is dead! Long live fieldwork!”, in Gregory Barz and Timothy Cooley, eds., Shadows in the Field. New perspectives for fieldwork in ethnomusicology. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1977,p.11).

Describe and compare some of the ways different worldviews are manifested in two music systems.

6. World music is “enhanced Western primitivist fantasy and voyeurism, allowing a listener to enjoy an hour of yuppie green politics, or audio-leisure tourism, perhaps even while feeling righteous about wealth trickle-down.” (Steven Feld, 1992, Voices of the rainforest: Politics of music, Arena 99/100, p. 175).

Discuss this statement in relation to the commodification of non-western musics by western musicians, composers and recording companies.

7. Compare the uses and functions of music in a society other than your own with the uses and functions of music in your home country. Include a discussion of how musical expression reflects and reinforces social realities.

8. Describe how music embodies diverse identities, with reference to at least two of the following: nationality, region, ethnicity, race, class, religion, age and gender.

9. The fundamental nature and meaning of music lie not in objects, not in musical worksbut in action, in what people do. It is only by understanding what people do as they take part in a musical act that we can hope to understand its nature and the function it fulfills in human life. (Christopher Small, “Prelude. Music and musicking”, Musicking. Middletown: Wesleyan University Press, p. 8).

Discuss Smalls opinion drawing on your reading and listening for this subject.

10. If music systems are studied in isolation apart from the cultural environment in which they are supported and to which they lend support, a great deal of the meaning of the music is certain to be obscured. Musical thought is indivisible from the thought processes and cultural concepts of the people who produce the music and the people for whom it is played. (Judith Becker, 1979, Time and Tune in Java, in A.L. Becker and Aram Yengoyan, eds. The Imagination of reality. Essays in Southeast Asian Coherence Systems. Norwood N.J: Ablex, pp. 197-210).

Discuss this statement drawing on your reading and listening for this subject.

Part B – Presentation
Instructions:
You are now to present a summary of your written report at the Board meeting of Ethical Trading Group using PowerPoint (maximum of 6 slides). Also present at the Board meeting will be a Board Member and Senior Tax Agent. The presentation will need to be recorded as audio or video recording and must be approximately 5 – 7 minutes in length. Please access the Case Study PowerPoint Template to help you complete this assessment. This file is also available in the Ethical Trading Group folder in the Additional Resources for this course.
You will require the help of two people to complete this assessment, one to play the role of the ?Senior Tax Agent? and another to play the role of a ?Board member?. These two people can be drawn from colleagues, family or friends. You will be interacting with both people in this presentation, so they will be working from ?Briefing notes? which can be found in Appendix A of this assessment. Each of the participants must ask the questions that have been allocated to them (i.e. different questions have been allocated for Participant 1 and Participant 2).
At the conclusion of your presentation, each of the participants must then complete the feedback form which can be found in Appendix B. This provides feedback on how clearly you have conducted the presentation. You must also ensure you obtain appropriate approvals to conduct and record a presentation in this setting so meeting participants must sign the Audio/Video recording consent form (please see Appendix C for a template you can use for this).
Before you commence your presentation, review the ?briefing notes? to ensure you will have the appropriate information to provide in your verbal responses to the participant questions.
The responses you provide to the participants? questions in the briefing notes must be completed and submitted as part of the assessment evidence for this activity.
When you have finished your audio or video recording, you will need to upload your file to OpenSpace. Click on the ?Support? tab ? then ?Assessment? and instruction on how to do this are within the ?Frequently Asked Questions?.
In your presentation, you need to:
1. Summarise the main issues from your written report (in Part A). This summary will be documented in the slides. Use headings and bullet points to format and present your summary of the main issues.
2. Answer the questions asked by the Board Member and the Senior Tax Agent (see Appendix A). These questions can be asked at the end of your Presentation.

please note that this assessment needs to be recorded as well

Assessment Requirements:
– You are required to write a 1000 word case study analysis, and apply one of the theories we have studied to a case study. This can take the form of an essay or report. ( The selection case stusy will be available on vUWS by Monday 26 October 2015 , so you have 5 days to finish the paper “26 Oct – 31 Oct” )
– Have a read through the case studies provided and choose one (1) case study that you wish to provide an analysis of by applying one of the international relations theories we have studied this semester. As an alternative option you may use the case study you have followed during the semester (only if you have done so ? this was an option I raised early in the semester).

The object of the exercise is to show how the theoretical frameworks we have explored this semester, and which you have written about in Tutorial Exercise 1, can help explain or interpret the issues involved in the case.

You will need to apply at least one theory to the case study, but you might like to try your hand at applying two theories. Your answer will show how the theory you?ve chosen highlights the major actors, forces, forms of power and recommendations associated with the case at hand. You can also reflect on the weaknesses of the theory in relation to the case.

Challenge yourselves and be creative. Don?t necessarily go for something easy and obvious. We are looking for originality and an excellent understanding of international relations theory. You could achieve this result by doing something more difficult instead of going for the obvious option.

– What to include and focus on.

Your paper should include the following things, though not necessarily in this order:

? A summary of the case: What is the case study you have chosen, and (briefly) what is the background and context of the case?

? A brief discussion of the theory you have selected and its basic principles. Avoid just repeating what you stated in your Tutorial Exercise 1, (if you choose one of the theories you discussed), as the focus of the assignment is the application of the theory to the case study. Remember this part should be brief as the main focus of the exercise is your analysis of a case.

? An analysis of the application of the theory to the case:

1. How does your theory explain or interpret the case?
2. What are the major assumptions, issues and actors identified by the theory?
3. What does the theory suggest are the limitations or incentives presented to the actors involved?

? A reflection on the relevance of your chosen theory in explaining or interpreting the case: What are the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen theory?

? Does the theory you have chosen lead you to make any recommendations about how states should resolve the issue?

We have learned that theory helps simplify the complexity of the real world, this means your theory will emphasize some points in the case as more important than others.
? What kind of argument about the case and its theoretical significance can you make?
? What aspects of the case do you need to emphasize and what aspects are not as important?

For some cases, two theories may apply. I?m quite happy for you to try your hand at comparing a couple of theories and their different accounts of the case. Diane and I think this is quite challenging so making an attempt is likely to be rewarded.

Your answers will need to be clear and concise and you need to use the appropriate terminology when discussing international relations theory. You are not required to go beyond the textbook to address this question, however you can do so if you wish. If you want to obtain more insight into the case study you can, however this is not really necessary. Just ensure that you reference ideas and quotes as detailed above and remember we are looking for your analysis.

? Issues have arisen with invoicing of sales where GST has not been correctly coded and processed.
? A review of income and expenditure identified $300k of legal expenses which had been incorrectly coded as deductible for tax purposes.
e) As a result of the variances between actual tax balances payable and the tax plan estimates noted in 3 d. above, what changes (2 changes) would you suggest have to be made to the budgeting and tax plan process and other management processes.
