Option #1: Diversity of Thought
Have you ever worked with an individual that rubbed you the wrong way? Or, have you ever worked for a leader who often only takes the advice of individuals whom he/she is like? Honestly, it is not uncommon for individuals to prefer people who are like them. In fact, you might have heard the phrase, “Birds of a feather flock together.” While we find comfort in those who are like us, organizations and teams cannot operate with individuals who have the same personalities, thought processes, mindsets, etc.

For this critical thinking activity, do the following:

Explain why diversity, in terms of diversity of thought, is important in organizations.
Recommend ways that leaders and HR professionals can encourage diversity of thought in terms of everyday practices, as well as the development of policies and procedures.
Detail why you believe it is more common for organizations to focus on diversity in terms of demographic differences, as opposed to differences in thought.
Provide statistical information, using research published in the last seven years, about the organizational benefits of thought diversity.
Submission Requirements

Write a 3- to 4-page paper, not including the title and reference pages, which are required.

You must support your analysis with at least three scholarly references which can include resources from this course.

How has the ‘third world debt crisis’ (and the managing of this crisis by the first world) altered the possibilities for meaningful development between the various regions of the developing world? How has the process of globalization altered the relationship between developed and developing nations(what remains constant and what, if anything, has changed)? Make reference to specific nation-state and regions in addressing the question.

As usual, your team is to choose five (5) stocks for this portfolio.  For this project, you will refine your strategies for selecting stocks. In the last project you measured value strictly according to the stocks book-to-market value (BV/MV), or price to book (P/B). For this project, you will build a portfolio using a top down analysis in addition to stock picking strategies; one that first assesses the nature of the economy, then identifies the appropriate sector(s) and industry(s), then selects stocks with six to twelve month potential using several screening criteria. You will begin by citing at least three (3) economic experts regarding the economic climate over the next 6-12 months, then progress to sectors and industries recommended by sector and industry experts. You must then use a minimum of four screening criteria of your choosing to identify five stocks for your portfolio.  Consult Chapters 9, 14, 17 and 18 in BK&M, as well as any online sources to aid your strategy. You are free to select growth and/or value stocks, but you must include each stocks P/B ratio if choosing value stocks.
Pages 3    On a separate page, list and describe the selection criteria for your stocks. Please briefly explain why the criteria is valid.

Pages 4-.    For each stock, provide a separate page detailing the company’s business and justification for your choices based on your economic analysis. Your report for each stock should also include a brief analysis (provided by the source of your choice), and the source(s) of your information. You must articulate your rationale for choosing your stocks in your words.

3. Research Essay Proposal
Weighting: This is a pass/fail portion of your Research Essay Assignment, but it is not optional. You will not be able to proceed with the essay until you have received a pass on this portion of the assignment.

Complete your Research Essay Proposal around the time you are doing Unit 5 (week 10 of the Suggested Study Schedule). You should be nearing completion of the essay around the time you are working on Unit 8 (weeks 1617), and submitting it in during Unit 9 (weeks 1819).

After you have chosen a topic, you must review your choice with your tutor. Submit your choice with:

o an introductory thesis statement;
o a short outline (200 words), and a bibliography which includes at least five scholarly sources (books from recognized university or academic presses, or articles from peer-reviewed journals).
o a short (one or two sentence) statement for each of your bibliographic entries, indicating why you think this would be an appropriate source for your topic.
There are three main approaches that you can take when you are formulating your topic. The first approach is to choose a particular problem or issue in the global economy (for example, the role of the World Bank, or debt and developing nations), and to explain its historical evolution, its relation to the nation-state system, and (if it is a problem) the possibilities of its resolution.

The second approach is to study an aspect of a specific national political economy that illustrates issues of salience for the study of international political economy as a whole. The essay will outline the historical developments of an issue at hand (for example, Mexico before and after the meltdown, or capitalist development in Russia or China), paying special attention to relations between domestic and international social forces and the state that have combined to create the contemporary situation. If that situation is perceived to be problematic, the essay will propose possible alternatives or solutions.

The third approach is to study a particular aspect of globalization, outlining and examining the debates for and against the most visible expressions of globalization (e.g., the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the free market speculation in currencies, the World Trade Organization). The essay would involve analyzing the pros and cons of each position and determining whether reforms (or more radical measures) are required to address prevailing concerns.

If you have some other topic you would like to tackle, you may do so after consulting with the tutor.

A research essay requires extra reading outside of the course materials. This entails extensive use of the library and any other source of primary and secondary documents and material. The bibliography indicates sources beyond those in the course, but you should also be familiar with information-gathering techniques in the Athabasca University Library and other university and public libraries. If you do not have access to libraries in your area, the Athabasca University Library staff will undertake searches for you. See the section titled Library Services in the Student Manual.

The Punic Wars are over, but Rome now faces a crisis due to internal strife in the aftermath of the wars.  Certain people are calling for reforms while others remain adamantly opposed to any type of reform or change.  Which will you be?  Will you oppose reform or propose reform?

Use the following sources to gather information and to complete this assignment.  Links to the readings can be found in the Rome Lessons Module.  You may also use the Lessons Modules, the textbook, and any links related to Rome.

Rome at the End of the Punic Wars, Polybius

Tiberius Gracchus, Plutarch

The Civil Wars (On the Gracchi), Apian

An owner of a latifunida

A Roman Senator

A territorial governor

An unemployed farmer living in the city of Rome

A non-Roman citizen living in the conquered territories

Answer and address each of the following questions in your individual statements and student responses.  Make sure that you give specific examples from the readings and that you use a lot of historical facts and details to answer the questions.

1.  What policies did Rome enact after the Punic Wars to govern their new territories?  How did these policies affect the people living in the conquered territories?

2.  Discuss the problems in the Roman Empire after the Punic Wars.

3.  What problems did Rome encounter governing and managing the new territories acquired after the Punic Wars?

4.  How did the aftermath of the Punic Wars affect the city of Rome itself?

5.  Why are people calling for reform?  Does your character support reform?  Why or why not?

6.  What is your character’s stand on the issues?  What reasons does your character give in support of his opinion?
