Textbook: Zaremba, A. J. (2021). Organizational Communication: Foundations for Collaboration. (4th ed.). Kendall Hunt Publishing Company.

WHAT: In this assignment, you will apply course concepts to the analysis of a real-world case study, Internet Development, CCS, and Customers. You will examine the challenges faced by Trent McGuire, a manager in communication & customer services at a large mutual fund company, whose department is not communicating with the Internet Development department which created serious customer service issues.

The failure of the two departments to communicate has led to numerous issues: the company has become reactive to customer response rather than proactive, and customer satisfaction has gone down. The conflict between them* has caused morale to dip at the company to the point where coworkers in other departments mock the situation.

In order to bring about organizational change, the dysfunctional interdepartmental communication at this mutual fund company should be addressed.

Your analysis should address the following questions:
1.What can McGuire do to facilitate effective communication between his department and the Internet development team?
2.How do systems theories, cultural theories, and critical theories of organization and communication relate to this case and its key players?
3.Does it matter if the grapevine (people not directly involved that circulate rumors and/or false information) is making fun of these two departments within Internet services?
4.Should top management be involved? Why or why not?

This assignment requires you to apply the concepts introduced in course readings (i.e. the Zaremba textbook and assigned readings) to support your analysis. You must use a minimum of three direct in-text references (although you will likely use more) in your analysis.

You must use a thesis statement to guide your essay. You must also use the provided rhetorical form to structure the essay. Guidelines on both are found below.

Write a thesis statement.

SUGGESTED THESIS MODEL:***NOTE: this sample thesis is not to be copied directly; it is a working draft to support your own writing and words. ***

Trent McGuires communications department has failed to clearly communicate with the internet services department because ______________________________________; (list as many causes as you discover) therefore, he should____________________________________ (list as many recommendations as you are offering in your final section) in order to establish effective communication, restore morale within the division, and raise customer satisfaction.

Write a rough draft and support your thesis with references to the case and course readings.
Make sure your rough draft and final draft use the rhetorical arrangement written below.

Police Officer Jones, in full uniform, was walking the midnight shift in a high-crime area at approximately 2:00 AM and is approached by a civilian who told Officer Jones she had been robbed and beaten by someone wearing a red shirt and white pants. The victims shirt was blood soaked from a severe laceration to her head and lip. She said the perpetrator was wearing a ski mask so she was unable to determine the gender/sex of the individual, as well as the race/ethnicity. However, she was able to inform Officer Jones that the perpetrator was approximately 58 tall and had a gun. The perpetrator stole her wallet and was holding it when he/she fled the scene, which was only a minute or two earlier. Officer Jones called for medical assistance and for backup as well.  While waiting with the victim for medical personnel to arrive, Officer Jones spotted an individual that partially fit the description about a block away from the scene. Though it was very dark, Officer Jones observed the white pants and dark shirt. Officer Jones walked toward the individual, leaving the victim unattended. Medical and backup had not arrived. When Officer Jones was approximately 20 feet away he identified himself as a police officer and told him in a loud, clear voice, Stop, Police!  However, the individual refused to comply with Officer Joness commands and continued to walk away from Officer Jones. Officer Jones again shouted. Stop, Police, and the individual stopped. As the individual stopped, he turned and faced Officer Jones, at which point saw a large bulge in the subjects right front pocket. The subject, who was now approximately 7 feet from Officer Jones, refused to keep hands where Officer Jones could see them. The subject reached into his right front pocket and began to draw his hand out of his right front pocket. Officer Jones drew his weapon and fired at the individual, hitting him in the left shoulder.
The individual fell to the ground and Officer Jones approached him and called for additional medical personnel. Officer Jones located a baggie filled with smaller baggies each filled with what appeared to be Cocaine and a cell phone. The individual was taken to the hospital and was labeled as stable.  Detectives investigating the incident discovered that the person shot was not the perpetrator in the alleged strong-armed robbery. They also discovered that the victim lied and was actually involved in a domestic violence incident and did not want her husband to be arrested.

EC5: Tiffany Lyons was just hired as the assistant treasurer of Key West Stores. The company is a specialty chain store with nine retail stores concentrated in one metropolitan area. Among other things, the payment of all invoices is centralized in one of the departments Tiffany will manage. Her primary responsibility is to maintain the companys high credit rating by paying all bills when due and to take advantage of all cash discounts.

Jay Barnes, the former assistant treasurer who has been promoted to treasurer, is training Tiffany in her new duties. He instructs Tiffany that she is to continue the practice of preparing all checks net of discount and dating the checks the last day of the discount period. But, Jay continues, we always hold the checks at least 4 days beyond the discount period before mailing them. That way, we get another 4 days of interest on your money. Most of our creditors need our business and dont complain. And, if they scream about our missing the discount period, we blame it on the mailroom or the post office. Weve only lost one discount out of every hundred we take that way. I think everybody does it. By the way, welcome to our team!

FORMAT: a written report of at least 1,800 words total (not including references), Times New Roman size 12 font, double-spaced

AIM: to research and reflect on current caste politics in India, including the relationship between caste and religion today, and create practices/visions of a post-prejudice world

DESCRIPTION: You will be doing an alternate form of the final project that other students in the course are completing in groups. We would like you to provide an overview of current caste politics in India in the form of a written report.

Your report should incorporate information you learn from at least 2 interviews about caste that you conduct with individuals who are not in this course, such as your friends, family members, mentors, and wider acquaintances. (We encourage you to conduct these interviews via phone call, video conferencing, etc.) Your report should also integrate your summary and analysis of at least 6 sources that have not been assigned as readings in this course. (Please do not just repeat what the sources say – go deeper and tell us what you think about them and why.)

Your report should ultimately aim to provide an overview of current caste politics in India, including the relationship between caste and religion today, and offer potential practices/visions of reaching a post-prejudice world in the context of the broader course themes (comparative analyses of race, religion, and caste in India and the United States).

In order to accomplish these aims, you will also need to interrogate your own worldviews about caste and religion and how these worldviews developed, and perhaps compare/contrast your perspective with those of the individuals you interview, in addition to incorporating your source research and analysis about current caste politics in India
