Income and Wealth Inequality:

Does Capitalism Work for Everyone?

Purpose: Understanding the growing gap in income and wealth in the USA and other countries, its economic causes and effects.

Task:  Use assigned resources and find your own to answer questions about inequality, and prepare for discussion.

Criteria for success:  Follow directions, answer questions, and have a good discussion!

Directions: Watch three (3) assigned videos (approx. 1/2 hour) and answer the following questions:

TED talk: How Inequality Harms Societies
Time Magazine: A Look and Income Inequality in the U.S.
Crash Course Economics: Income and Wealth Inequality
(3 points) According to the videos, what is happening to inequality in the USA? Why is this an economic concern? Explain. (1-2 paragraphs)
(3 points) According to the videos, what are some of the social costs of inequality in America and other societies? (1-2 paragraphs)
(3 points) Find another source (article, video, website, documentary, blog, etc.) that addresses inequality in the U.S. or around the world.
Write a few sentences telling what it was about and your opinion of it.
List some of the facts that you found. There should be solid facts or specific and thought-provoking ideas presented, or you should find a different source. These could be facts that confirm or challenge those presented in the assigned videos. You may include your opinion.  (1-2 paragraphs)
[Possible bonus: If this subject is of interest, it might provide an opportunity for extra credit (see syllabus). A list of approved videos is in Canvas/modules/extra credit opportunities.  The documentary “Inequality for All” is on the list, and highly recommended.]

This paper is to be based on the movie A Beautiful Mind.  The book was written by Sylvia Nasar and the movie was directed by Ron Howard in 2001 (30 points)

Include research the mental condition suffered by John Nash.  Describe the mental condition: History of the mental condition

Typical signs/symptoms
Typical Diagnostic tests and treatment
Describe characteristics of the condition exhibited by Mr. Nash utilizing Gordons 11 Functional Health Patterns.

APA paper format with title page and reference page (At least 5 references with no references older than 5 years).  Textbooks are NOT to be used as a reference source.  Minimum of three pages and maximum of five pages excluding the title and reference page. No abstract page.

After reading the article “Courage in Denmark: Resistance to the Nazis in WWII” and the poem “First They Came…. write an informative, comparative essay about those resisting the Nazi deportation and genocide of the Danish Jews, and how their actions contradict the message of Niemoller’s poem. In what ways did the Dane’s response differ from other occupied European countries? Why was their response significant? What did they risk in opposing the Nazi plan to deport the Jews? Compare the message of Neimoller’s poem with the actions of the Danish. Make sure you cite specific text to support your comparison.

White Supremecy and Prison industrial complex

Focus: Remembering that oppression is prejudice backed by institutional power, for this essay, you are going to examine one question: How do Capitalism and/or White Supremacy function to fuel the Prison Industrial Complex?
Your paper also needs to:-
Pose a solution for how to resist/upturn/dismantle the Prison Industrial Complex for us to work toward a more just society be specific-
Use evidence from readings we have used in class supplemental articles or Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis-
Use at least two credible sources from outside of class (which means you need to research)

Questions to think about for your essay (you dont need to answer these directly; these are just jumping off points):-How does the institution retain its power?-What is the ethical dilemma with profiting off of punishment/refashioning slavery?-What are some of the long-term effects of the oppression upon which the Prison Industrial Complex enacts?-How does Oppression Logic (the 4 Is) function to uphold the idea of prisons and criminality?-How does the formation of the idea of criminality help perpetuate conceptions of prisons?
