The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning.  Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active  participation of students and the instructor to create robust  interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an  original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in  dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week.  At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both  level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the  discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and  thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly  dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. Two  additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students  are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often,  as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and  participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn  through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content  and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way  dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be  accepted after the end of each unit.

Assignment Details

A mass-casualty incident (MCI) creates a uniquely challenging  management and coordination quagmire. These events can occur as a result  of natural disasters, such as a tsunami, earthquake, or hurricane; they  can be a result of an accident, such as a ferry sinking during  inclement weather; or they can result from an act of violence, such as a  terrorist attack like the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing or the attacks of  September 11, 2001. In any case, these attacks present a unique  challenge to law enforcement, emergency response teams, and government  oversight.

As you explore the different methods used to deal with MCIs, as well  as the different governmental agencies that may be involved, consider  the following:

Assignment Guidelines

  • In 6 paragraphs, address the following:
    • What federal and state agencies are required to deal with an MCI resulting from a terrorist attack? Why?
    • How do you distinguish between federal and state authorities for both operational and management functions? Explain.
      • How do you ensure a fusion of effort between federal and state authorities? Explain.
    • MCIs resulting from terrorist attacks are considered the  purview of law enforcement. This creates a challenge during  multijurisdictional MCIs. During MCIs resulting from domestic terrorism,  such as the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, what law enforcement agency  should have primary jurisdiction? Why?
      •  How should federal law enforcement engage state and local law enforcement for support? Why?
    • Treating long-term physical and mental health effects following  any MCI can prove costly to state governments. How should the federal  government work with states to ensure that proper medical and mental  health is provided? Explain.
      • What federal and state organizations should be responsible for these efforts? Why?
  • Post a new topic to the Discussion Board that contains your responses to the above questions.
  • Comment on at least two other students’ posts.

In your own words, answer this unit’s discussion questions in a main post (recommended minimum 350 words)

After you have reviewed the Assignment Details below, click the Discussion Board link under the My Work heading above to open the Discussion Board and make your post.

Continue with the scenario that used in the individual project for  this Unit, in which you, as a County EM planner, have selected a plan  for the team to focus upon for testing, evaluating, and revising. To  prepare for engaging in this discussion board, you should review the  HSEEP, and any other resources you choose, to understand the  fundamentals of capabilities-based planning, exercising, and program  management.

Assignment Guidelines

  • Address the following in your main post:
    • The HSEEP discusses a number of types of capabilities throughout its  chapters and volumes. (These are not captured in one specific area  within the materials.) Describe and provide specific examples for  capabilities that prevent, protect against, and recover from and  mitigate effects of the threats, hazards, or challenges associated with  your selected plan.
    • Consider this example, using a plan that you were unable to  choose: natural disasters, tornado preparedness, and capabilities to  prevent. It is not possible prevent a tornado, but it is potentially  possible to prevent loss of lives. Capabilities might include acquiring a  siren system, educating the public about its signals, routinely testing  it, incorporating physical evacuation drills, promoting and aiding  citizens in establishing safe rooms or cellars to evacuate to,  publishing steps to achieve personal resiliency, and more.
      • Name and describe three significant threats, hazards, or challenges that are associated with your selected plan.
      • For each of these three, describe specific examples of those  capabilities that aid to prevent, protect against, recover from, and  mitigate the effects of these elements.
      • What types of training exercises do you think would be most appropriate for these planning operations? Explain in detail.
  • Post a new topic to the Discussion Board that contains your responses to the above questions.
  • Comment on at least two other students posts.

This is the Methodology (Chapter III).  Please see the below for instructions for writing the Methodology.

This chapter should describe how the data will be collected for the research (i.e. original “bench type”, survey or peer reviewed data from published sources of data collected from various government or other databases) that after analysis WILL ALLOW YOU TO MAKE A COMPELLING ARGUMENT TO ACCEPT OR REJECT EACH RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS.  It is important to utilize appropriate methods of data collection in order to be able to support or reject the research hypothesis.  This chapter should begin with a description of the research methods used in the research, including a description of the dependent and independent variables, if any.

Chapter III (Methodoloy) will most likely include the following subsections:

Setting:  if important to the research, described the time and place of data collection.

Description of the Subjects:  depending on the type of data used in the project, this subsection can include either subjects involved in primary data collection, or those described in published research studies. If the project involves human subjects, it is necessary to first obtain their consent in writing..

Description of the Research Instrument (s):  fully describe all questionnaires and tests, if appropriate.  Include a copy of questionnaires in the Appendix.

Procedures:  describe in full detail how data were collected.  If different methods were used, each method must be described.  This subsection should also include a description and rationale for any statistical procedures used to support or reject the research hypothesis.

Follow these steps to complete this assignment:

Conduct a Risk Assessment on a specific target in your community, a school, hospital, business or government office (be sure to choose an actual specific target for this assignment).  For a shot at max pointsLink the real world event, to at least three specific course resources (cite specific page numbers, charts, graphs etc in the course textbook, power points slide and or other course material).  The key is to cite specifics and highlight these in yellow!!
Next describe the natural, technical or man-made hazard which is most likely to threaten your target. For example, the Ambassador hotel in my town of Mayberry is most likely to face a natural hazard such as a tornado. Mayberry is a small Midwestern town so terrorism and earthquakes are unlikely to occur. However, the threat from tornadoes are a real possibility.
Conduct specific  historical research that applies to your target of past hazards to establish a baseline for how much risk your community faces from this hazard. What is the frequency of this hazard? Is it predictable and or cyclical (tornado or hurricane season)?
Describe the specific impact of the hazard and the loss of your target would have on your community.
Discuss how the risk to your target can be mitigated?
Which agencies and or private entities may be involved in the risk analysis process and mitigation process.
Be sure to demonstrate your understanding of the terms and concepts associated with Risk. For example, RISK (R) can be calculated as follows: R = f (C, V, T)

C = the CONSEQUENCES of an attack on a particular target
V = an assessment of the VULNERABILITY of the target
T = the THREAT or likelihood that a specific target will suffer an attack or disaster

My area is Seattle Tacoma so you if you could a location around here that would be great.  Thanks

What does the Flood Control Act provide and what shortcomings do we see with its use?  Have you had any real world experience with the FCA?

Describe the events that led to the creation of FEMA and what is its responsibility? What FEMA region do you live in and what information can be obtained from their website?

How is a hazard different from a disaster?  Give a real world personal example of each and how they impact you?

Explain several of the social factors emergency managers must consider when assessing a communitys risk.  Who is your local EM?  Do you know how to contact their office?

My area is the seattle tacoma area in washington state

This is a UK Land law coursework. It is a case study that is divided into 4 parts with a word limit of 1200. Generally for these type of case studies, the IRAC formula is used; which stands for issue, rule, application and conclusion. You must use relevant UK statutes, case laws and journal arguments to cite. Relevant statutes you must use for definitions and general citation; Law of Property Act 1925 and 1964, Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Act 2002, Land registration Act 2002, Limitation Act 1980, Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996, Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, Protection of Eviction Act 1977. Remember, there is a lot to uncover and the word limit is low. Therefore, when you cite cases DO NOT DISCUSS FACTS OF THE CASES, but its application and rule instead and how it is relevant to your discussion. Throughout, you must be focusing on advising the client, Nicola (on the uploaded file.) If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

5.  Conclusion

All Primary Assignments include a thesis statement, a bibliography (APA style), and the use and citation of three assigned reading articles from the current week and one assigned reading article from a previous week.

A Case Study in Equality of Opportunity
Learning Objective: The theme of equality of opportunity is examined through the specific lens of a case study.

For your assignment this week, research two groups in American society. Use research to provide support for your persuasive argument. For your research, you can use data from peer-reviewed sources, PEW, Gallup, Brookings, or a Federal Agency such as the U.S. Census Bureau. Devote at least 250 words to each group.

1.    Identify a group in American society that has been, at any time since 1633, treated with less than an equal right to opportunity. This group might identify by race, religion, gender, ethnicity, cultural or historical background, handicap, sexual preference, geographic location, education, job, immigration status, and so on. However, over time, this group has overcome many of the obstacles that have restricted their rights. Use research to find an example of this groups success.

2.    Identify a group in American society that has been, at any time since 1633, treated with less than an equal right to equality of opportunity. This group might identify by race, religion, gender, ethnicity, cultural or historical background, handicap, sexual preference, geographic location, education, job, immigration status, and so on. However, over time, this group has failed to overcome obstacles that have restricted their rights. Use research to find an example of this groups lack of success.

3.    Conclude your research with a 100-word discussion of why one group has been successful while the other group continues to struggle. What did you learn by comparing and contrasting these two groups? What is our role as individuals to help obtain equal rights for others?
