The textbook provides a template for analyzing ethical dilemmas using “consequentialism.” (I have attach these pages at the end of the homework). A hypothetical case is provided, the template outlined (Utilitarian Evaluation of Ethical Dilemmas), and then the application of that template to the case is demonstrated (Applying Utilitarianism).  A summary follows at the end of that illustrative analysis.  Study this sample case and application of the template (and summary commentary) carefully.

You are presented with a new case for study and discussion.

Your assignment is to take the “consequentialism” template (box Utilitarian Evaluation of Ethical Dilemmas) and apply it to the new case.

Lastly, address this final question:  How well do you feel that consequentialism guided ethical decision making in this case?  Remember, this is to be answered from your perspective, as persons analyzing the ethical choices in this case.  Had you been in the “hot seat”, would consequentialism be helpful in guiding your decisions?  Be thoughtful and thorough in this assessment of how the theoretical material helps a criminal justice professional make ethical choices.

Compare and contrast the different definitions of terrorism. Most definitions include the use of violence to create fear. The Department of State focuses on sub-national groups. The Department of Defense includes the threat of violence. The Federal Bureau of Investigation notes that terrorism is illegal. The Department of Homeland Security concentrates on critical infrastructure.

In a two to three page paper (not including the cover page an reference page), compare and contrast these definitions; identifying the similarities and the differences.

The Labeling Theory And Reintergrative Shaming Evaluation

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper examining the relationship between restorative justice programs and crime reduction. In your opinion, is it better to assist the justice-involved reintegrate into society towards becoming productive members or stigmatize them as “criminals” who cannot be changed or be rehabilitated?  In your paper, be sure to address the following:

• A brief summary of the restorative justice approach to include the relationship between the labeling theory and reintergrative shaming
• An overview of the restoration process and the desired outcomes of this strategy.
• Compare and contrast ways restorative justice is used in the criminal justice system, schools and in the community.
• An explanation for why restorative justice programs should be used or not with specific examples which support your findings.

Case Study—Change Implementation

Case studies give you concrete examples of how a topic provides real-world benefits. A case study, “The Asda Way of Working,” is presented below. The intent of this case study is to demonstrate how concepts and theories in this module apply to the change implementation process.

• Explain how you would evaluate the change leadership of Archie Norman and his top executives during their first six months at Asda.
• Recommend steps to be undertaken over the next eighteen months.
