Global Health

Describe the factors that impact health and health care delivery, and the interventions that have been implemented. Explain the influence of altruism on global health, and identify evidence-based interventions to address the global health topic
What health issue do you see as having the greatest impact on the world today?
What is the attitude of the United States towards this health issue?
How might nursing influence the outcome of this health issue?
Suppose you have been asked to submit an article for publication in your organization’s newsletter, about a global health topic and how policies and practices at the local level can affect global health. Choose one global health topic from the list (or use another of your choice):
Mental health.
Communicable diseases (HIV/AIDS, influenza, malaria, tuberculosis).
Non-communicable diseases (cancer, lung, and heart disease).
Maternal and child health (prenatal care, midwife education, childhood vaccinations).
LGBT health.
Disabilities.
Global water supply and safety (GlobalHealth.gov, n.d.).
Identify your topic. Provide background information and statistics on the topic, including the global areas most affected by the topic and the types of health care issues most often associated with the topic.
Describe the factors that impact health and health care delivery in the global areas most affected by the topic you selected. These factors may include not only culture and tradition, but also politics, economics, and social attitude.
Explain the influence of altruistic organizations (Peace Corps, Project Hope, religious and non-religious missions, and so on) on health and health care practices in the global area specifically associated with the topic.
Describe the interventions implemented to address the health care issues associated with the topic. Include both conventional and unconventional interventions.
Explain how the health care decisions and practices at the local level (the area most impacted by the topic) relate to health and health care delivery in other global areas. This is not limited only to best practices, but could include poor health care decisions and practices.
Identify evidence-based interventions that are effective, efficient, cost-effective, and equitable for promoting wellness and disease prevention in the specific area and population

MGMT 4305 Leadership Team Project Assignment

Elements

  1. Select a leadership domain, such as a particular industry, professional sports, politics, religion, or education. The team and I are going with “online shopping” as our industry.
  2. Select two leaders from that domain. Make sure that you are selecting leaders for whom ample information is available from books, reputable periodicals, and reliable Internet sources. “Amazon and eBay” and the leaders that we chose are Jeff Bezos CEO (Amazon) in 1994 & Meg Whitman CEO (eBay) in 1998.
  3. Conduct an analysis of your chosen domain during your chosen time period. If you have selected leaders from different time periods (both from the 90’s), you will need to compare and contrast the domain analyses between or among the time periods. Your analysis should consider the following:
    1. Governmental or environmental factors relevant to organizations within the domain
    2. Relevant economic factors
    3. Competition, including the threat of new entrants, and rivalry
    4. Access to supplies, capital, and labor
    5. Access to buyers/customers
    6. Substitute products/services

Depending on the domain you’ve selected, some of the items above will be more or less relevant. The purpose of this stage of the project is to familiarize yourself with the situation your chosen leaders faced.

  1. Provide brief background information on each leader relevant to his or her chosen domain or leadership performance. This doesn’t need to be an all-encompassing biography. For instance, a leader’s birthdate is probably not relevant unless you are using it to argue that his or her approach to leadership was shaped by growing up during a particular era.
  2. Describe the leaders’ organizations.
  3. Describe the leaders’ styles in as much detail as possible, using content from this course and your text as well as your personal observations and insights. In some cases, you will find that someone else has already evaluated the leadership style of one of your subjects; in other cases you will have to draw your own conclusions based on the information available. In either case, provide concrete details to support these conclusions. Use associated terminology (from chapter readings) within the context of your paper showing your understanding of the terms. In addition, you are to cite at least five other resources when writing about leadership styles. Wikipedia is not to be one of the resources. You may cite other sources when discussing the backgrounds, companies and other information regarding the selected leaders. The sources for this information can vary, but at least one of the sources must be a company website (ex: Amazon.com)

Here is a list of the leadership styles covered to make it easier:

  • Charismatic Leadership
  • Transformational Leadership
  • Charismatic-Transformational Leadership
  • Stewardship and Servant Leadership
  • Diversity Leadership
  • Strategic Leadership
  • Crisis Leadership
  1. Provide your perspectives and recommendations regarding the tactics used by the leaders. What were/are their strengths and weaknesses? Would you have led differently? How would a different leadership style have affected the outcomes?

Case Study Chapter 16 Measles

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection which was first identified in 1954. Shortly thereafter, immunizations were developed for this virus and in recent years we have seen sharp decreases in infection, morbidity, and mortality rates in almost all areas of the world. However, in some of the world’s less-developed nations and in a number of at-risk population subsets, issues relative to both measles and to measles-related secondary infections remain.

Elizabeth F. has volunteered to spend a year in Malawi, a country in sub-Saharan Africa, working with a group that is educating young women in both literacy and basic lifestyle skills. Malawi is a country where the World Health Organization operated an immunization program several years ago that dramatically reduced the rate of measles and associated complications.

  1. What assumptions can Elizabeth make about the likelihood of encountering measles in Malawi, based on the efforts of the World Health Organization?
  2. Should Elizabeth update her measles immunization?

Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries. Malnutrition is common, particularly in the countryside where Elizabeth’s program operates.

  1. What is the interaction between measles and malnutrition, both in terms of the impact of the disease on malnutrition levels, and in terms of the effect of malnutrition on the severity of the disease?

Remember that your answers to the case study questions must total 1 single-spaced page of text.  You also need to be sure to include at least 1 reference and the corresponding in-text citations where appropriate.  Use APA style for the references and citations.

Community Assessment

DescriptionWrite a Community Problem and Population Analysis Paper using the course textbook assessment framework. As part of a community assessment process we need to know and understand the target population and social issue/problem of concern in a community. Students will work individually to analyze and discuss a current social issue or problem faced by the population of interest.

There are no page requirements (min or max); I do however expect each student to answer the questions thoroughly and to format the paper in APA. The paper should not be a listing of number questions and answers. In your Analysis paper make sure that you utilize outside resources and compose your paper in a scholarly APA formatted paper.
Students will research a community need affecting a specific community that the student chooses. The assessment must include the neighborhood directly impacted by the need. Students must incorporate textbook course material and questions (1-8) in their paper.
1. Area/neighborhood being assessed? DFW is the area
2. What are the names of one agency already addressing the need? You can choose Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) (Chair) to discuss the next 6 questions
3. What need(s) do they address?
4. What target population (demographics) do they serve?
5. What is their mission statement?
6. What activities or programs do they provide to meet the needs of their mission? Provide details of each program
7. How many people are on their staff?
8. What is the estimated annual budget of the agency?
