Assignment 2: Critical Evaluation of Court Case

It is important to understand the impact an expert testimony may have in the ultimate decision made by a court. In addition, it is helpful for practitioners of forensic psychology to be able to read and understand legal cases.

Tasks:

The case describes an appellate legal opinion or court decision involving expert witness testimony. When a case is appealed, it goes to an appellate or to a higher court. The appellate court then reviews the findings of the lower court, which in this case was the trial court. The appellate court offered the following two opinions:

  • The first opinion (Commonwealth of Virginia v. Allen, 2005, pp. 1–24) is the majority opinion and is the one that counts.
  • The second opinion (Commonwealth of Virginia v. Allen, 2005, pp. 24–31) is an opinion filed by a minority of judges who concurred (agreed) in part and dissented (disagreed) in part with the majority of the judges who ruled.

After reading the appellate legal opinion, write a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following:

  • Discuss whether either of the expert witnesses in this case acted unethically. Support your opinion with the relevant APA or specialty ethical guidelines.
  • Indicate whether you agree with the majority decision or the minority concurring or dissenting opinion. Explain why.

The paper should be in APA style.

Psychology Disorder Paper

• Symptom picture – describe the symptoms commonly seen in the disorder you have chosen to research.

Prevalence rates – prevalence rates in the US and world. (1pt.)

• Cultural variables – You should list a couple countries your disorder is found in and if it presents differently or with the same symptom picture as seen in the US. You should also include subcultures of the US (e.g. African American, Native American, Hispanic, Asian American). (2 pts.)

• Age of onset and Gender features – What is the average age when symptoms appear that lead to a diagnosis? Is the onset acute or insidious? For Gender features: ex. Bipolar is equally common among adolescents, major depression diagnosed 2X more in females than in males. (1pt.)

• Etiology – Describe the biology and genetics behind the disorder you are researching. E.g. What neurotransmitter systems and subcortical structures of the brain are effected in the disorder you are researching? It may be primarily a biological based disorder such as Bipolar or Schizophrenia, but be sure to address the psychological/emotional issues associated with this disorder. Eg. expressed emotion (EE) with regard to family relations or coping with peers with either bipolar or schizophrenia. Is this highly genetic? Does it run in families such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, ADHD, etc? (2 pts.)

• Course – Will it be a lifelong chronic course e.g. childhood-onset schizophrenia or relatively short episodes e.g. depression? How does the presentation change and effect the child/adolescent over developmental stages (e.g. Erickson developmental model)? (1pt)

• Prognosis – What is the end result you expect to see with regard to the symptom picture? E.g. What would the symptom picture look like when the person is 70. E.g. Would the client still have to be on medication? Would they still exhibit the symptoms of the disorder or would most of the symptoms abate? (1pt)

• Current treatment – What is the most effective treatment for your chosen disorder? Explain the main underlying theory of this treatment(s) and explain a technique that could be employed in the treatment plan. E.g. cognitive restructuring for major depression). (1pt)

• A differential diagnosis – You should compare and contrast another disorder ( ONLY ONE) which is similar and how to differentiate it from the main disorder you have chosen to research. In what ways is it similar and in what ways is it dissimilar? E.g. major depression vs Persistent Depressive Disorder. (1pt)

Assignment 3: Developmental Psychology Research Designs

In developmental psychology, the focus of research is often to examine change over time. Developmental psychologists have some special research designs that allow them to accomplish this. Two such research designs are the cross-sectional design and the longitudinal design. A cross-sectional design measures different groups of people of different ages at the same time. A longitudinal design measures the same group of people at different ages and also, therefore, at different times.

Use your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources to identify and research a topic in adult development (e.g., memory, muscle strength, etc.) that you wish to examine across various age agroups. Develop an outline for either a cross-sectional or longitudinal research design. Write  a paper consisting of the following information:

  • An introduction to the topic you selected, including a summary of at least one peer-reviewed journal article describing recent research (post 2005) on the topic;
  • A description of  how you will measure the topic of study (e.g., the dependent variable).
  • A description of  which type of design will be used and why that would be most appropriate. Also identify what age groups will be studied.
  • On the basis of your readings and research, provide a prediction of what you expect to find upon completion of your study.

Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Your paper should be double-spaced with one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors.  It should include a title page with a running head and a reference page. The body of the paper should be 3-5 pages in length.

PSYCHOLOGY 302/M2A1

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of at least 2 different sampling methods. Describe how researchers go about selecting a sampling strategy. What role does the research question play in choosing the sample? What does it mean to have a  representative sample and why is this vital to the outcome of the study? You may wish to incorporate some of the scholarly sources you have been reviewing for your research project within your discussion.

Assignment 1: Group Typology

As a clinical social worker it is important to understand group typology in order to choose the appropriate group method for a specific population or problem. Each type of group has its own approach and purpose. Two of the more frequently used types of groups are task groups and intervention groups.

For this Assignment, review the “Cortez Multimedia” case study, and identify a target behavior or issue that needs to be ameliorated, decreased, or increased. In a 2-page report, complete the following:

· Choose either a treatment group or task group as your intervention for Paula Cortez.

· Identify the model of treatment group (i.e., support, education, teams, or treatment conferences).

· Using the typologies described in the Toseland & Rivas (2017) piece, describe the characteristics of your group. For instance, if you choose a treatment group that is a support group, what would be the purpose, leadership, focus, bond, composition, and communication?

· Include the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of group as an intervention.

Read And Write

Consider the several memoirs of different people’s experience of World War II. Select ONE of these memoirs and describe how it represents war. Does it fit with one of Niditch’s ideologies? What might one learn about war from this personal history? (at least 300 words)

External Financing

Genesis Energy’s newly established operations management team decided  to seek outside assistance in developing a long-term operating plan  that also addresses the financial issues identified. A major  consideration for Genesis Energy is assessing those short-term and  long-term economic factors, which will greatly enhance the company’s  ability to successfully transition to a viable international business.  Grasping and correctly prioritizing these economic factors, supply and  demand, interest rates, inflation, unemployment, and exchange rates are  pivotal, thereby requiring expert guidance. Therefore, their first major  decision was to hire a respected strategy-consulting firm, Sensible  Essential Consulting.
After meeting with the client team,  Sensible Essential Consulting concluded that the operations management  team would significantly benefit from a more in-depth understanding of  the financial environment at Genesis Energy. This understanding needed  to encompass not only sales, costs, and profitability forecast under the  new strategic plan, but also the way expansion would highlight the need  to manage working capital and cash flow in order to try to minimize the  need for external financing.
As the lead consultant for Sensible Essential Consulting, do the following:

  • Describe and evaluate the financial environment at Genesis Energy by using ratio analysis of the company.
  • Choose one ratio from each of the five categories listed in the  table on page 103 of your textbook, Brigham and Ehrhardt, and do a  3-year ratio trend analysis. Compare these results to the industry  averages. What do the results tell you?
  • Name three specific options that are available to Genesis Energy for obtaining needed capital.
  • Identify and explain two ways Genesis Energy can improve its strategy.
  • Explain what specific macroeconomic factors are likely to affect  genesis, i.e., inflation, interest rates, exchange rates etc. Please do a  brief country risk assessment and discuss the most likely problems a  company like Genesis Energy is likely going to confront when  contemplating an international expansion. What would be the least risky  avenue for them to get their product/service to the country you have  chosen? Which entry mode is the riskiest? Explain.

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to  citation of sources. Then, create a 6–8-slide PowerPoint with Speaker’s  notes and references (including research) presenting your findings to  the Genesis Energy operations management team.
