Research Paper
For the final project, most of you will be preparing a research paper on a topic in which you have developed a particular interest during this course. Your paper must be on human biology and you are strongly encouraged to choose a topic that interests you personally or professionally. Perhaps there is a specific health concern that interests you. This is your chance to delve in-depth into biological studies and pull together and apply important information.
Your final research paper should be a standard college paper of 8-12 pages with an extensive, informative, and current bibliography that includes at least 10 sources. You will analyze a problem or present an argument for a specific thesis. You should begin with a definite thesis statement, which states a position that will be backed up throughout the body of the paper. An example of a thesis statement is: “Since it is very difficult to develop an effective vaccine against HIV, prevention may be the best approach to reducing infection.” Please review the final project rubric to understand how you are being evaluated for this project.
Check out the the college’s ESC Online Writing Center_(new window) for step-by-step guidelines for researching, organizing, writing and documenting your thesis paper. You may find the Research Database Subject Guides_(new window) for searching for articles by subject topic very useful for when researching scientific disciplines.

Please write your final paper in your own word processing program using CSE format, save it as an rtf and submit below as an attachment. Refer back to our discussion on college writing and plagiarism and the Final Project Rubric. Talk with your instructor about any concerns you might have before submitting your paper.
Below is a list of alternative projects that you may discuss with your instructor. Some of these do not lend themselves to a formal thesis statement, so an alternative form of a proposal may be considered. Talk to your instructor about this as soon as you can. This is the time to brainstorm about your project plans. The efforts you put in now will pay off when you begin writing the paper towards the end of term.
