Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour. Psychology has adopted the scientific method which means that it studies questions that can be tested in a precise, objective, publicly verifiable fashion. The first step in doing psychology scientifically is learning how to ask testable questions.

Please come up with a question and turn it into a hypothesis by stating it as truth, and then identify the Independent Variable and the Dependent Variable.

Independent Variable: This is the variable that you manipulate to see how it will affect the dependent variable.

Dependent Variable: This is the variable that you will measure.

Is there a Control group? You should be able to rule out alternative explanations for the differences between your experimental and control groups.

Research Participants: Who are your participants? Random assignment? Make sure you consider how representative your sample is.

Locate two recent legal decisions that are of interest to you in a newspaper (paper or online news source). One legal decision should be local (i.e. in the state of Indiana) and the other should be a national legal decision. Please be sure to locate an article that is at least( 4 paragraphs in length) and has enough substance so that you can summarize the article, and develop your opinion

Be sure to print off or scan each article and include it as part of your assignment.

For each article, be sure to do the following:

1. Read the article to ensure that you understand what the legal decision was regarding.

2. Write a paragraph summarizing the article. Be sure you have factual information included in your summary. Make sure you state where you found the article (i.e. name of newspaper or online news source).

3. Write a paragraph stating your opinion about the legal decision. Be sure to address the following questions:

  • What did you think about the article?
  • Based on the article, and the facts provided to you, do you agree with the decision? Why or why not?
  • Did you learn something new about the law? If so, what did you learn?
  • Are you more informed about what is going on in your area, the nation and/or the world?

Description:  Write a brief paper, approximately 3-5 pages, addressing the topic of “Tort Reform.”  A good paper will include the following:

  • a brief definition of the concept of tort reform addressing the historical foundation
  • a specific discussion of the positive impact of limiting tort recovery
  • a specific discussion of the negative impact of limiting tort recovery
  • a conclusory discussion that outlines a your personal opinion on whether YOU feel tort reform is a good idea or what you would propose as an alternative to the current system – this should be a persuasive argument

Span of Control and Practical Reflection”

  • Supervision is an important part of managing a law enforcement agency. Chapter 8 of the course textbook covers several supervision models used to effectively manage police operations. Span of Control is one of the models examined and it refers to identifying the appropriate number of employees that can be managed by any one supervisor (p. 227).  Give your opinion regarding what is the appropriate span of control and explain your rationale.
  • In most cases, careers in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement exist, in some form of another at the Federal, State, and Local/County/City level and often in the private-sector.  This week, research your selected position on USAJobs.gov, USCourts.gov(federal) or your state’s employment management system, local municipality’s employment management system, and Indeed.com (private-sector), and discuss the similarities and differences (example: salary, jurisdiction, scope of work, required skill and education, and promotion potential).
