Members of dominant ethnic and racial groups may assume that other groups’ struggles are not their own or assume that those of a given race speak with one voice and react in the same way to their oppression. In reality, people can cope with racial inequalities in a variety of ways, creating complex relationships both between the dominant and oppressed group and among members of the dominant and oppressed groups.
As a social worker, you must understand the many ways in which racial privilege can impact your clients. You must also understand the ways in which racial privilege has impacted your life and the ways you react to the realities of racism. You will likely need to help clients address racial divides and combat racial inequality to empower them.
To prepare: Review “Working With Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Aaron.”
Post by Day 3: an explanation of how dominant groups can play a role in marginalizing other groups based on racial and ethnic characteristics. Discuss the potential negative impact of a dominant culture on immigrants and refugees, such as Aaron. How might racism and prejudice impact his assimilation? Furthermore, explain how you would respond to Aaron when he discusses his family’s rejection of his desire to maintain his cultural roots. In your explanation, identify specific skills you would employ as a multiculturally sensitive social worker.

One of the most important topics in sensory perception is noise-related hearing loss. For an interesting article on the link between race car events and hearing loss, read this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/26/sports/othersports/26noise.html?_r=2 ) and provide some comments on your reaction. Describe several ways in which noise-induced hearing loss can occur, and then discuss what can be done to reduce the chances of noise-induced hearing loss. How is noise-related hearing loss different from natural age-related hearing loss?

Now discuss how our hearing changes as we age. Do you think you have experienced any age-related hearing loss? To experience this phenomenon, go to http://www.freemosquitoringtones.org and listen to several of the ?Mosquito Ringtones?. The website does a good job of highlighting the frequencies that different age groups are able to hear and not hear. These ringtones were initially promoted to teenagers as a way to receive phone calls and text messages without adults being able to hear them. More recently, however, they have been used as a way to keep teenagers from loitering in specific areas of shopping malls. What was the highest frequency you were still able to hear? Does it roughly correspond with your age? Provide some additional thoughts on the differences and similarities between noise-related hearing loss and age-related hearing loss.

Discussion post should be at least 400 words. Answer each question with details.

In many societies certain groups possess more resources and hold more power than other groups. In some of these societies, racial discrimination and racial tension also exist. While members of the societies may openly acknowledge that unequal distribution of power and racism are present in their society, many fail to examine the complex relationships between privilege and racism. Social workers must understand this complex relationship so they can educate and empower their clients. Empowerment is the cornerstone of social work practice.
In the book Black Empowerment, the author,Barbara Solomon, writes, “Empowerment refers to a process whereby persons who belong to a stigmatized social category throughout their lives can be assisted to develop and increase skills in the exercise of interpersonal influence and the performance of valued social roles” (p. 6).
Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client’s power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients’ awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold?through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients’ lives and apply the appropriate skills.
To prepare: Review the case study “Working With Individuals: The Case of Mary.”
Post an explanation of the relationship between racism and privilege. Furthermore, explain how the concepts of racism and privilege relate to “Working With Individuals: The Case of Mary.” Explain the impact of racism and privilege on social work practice. Provide recommendations for how you as a social worker might use an empowerment perspective when responding to Mary. Be specific and provide examples from the case. Also, identify specific skills social workers might employ.

Red Bull?s integrated marketing communications mix has been so successful that the company has created an entirely new drink category?functional energy drinks?and has become a multibillion-dollar brand among competition from beverage kings like Coca-Cola and Pepsi. In less than 20 years, Red Bull has become the energy drink market leader by skillfully connecting with the global youth. Dietrich Mateschitz founded Red Bull in Austria and introduced the energy drink into Hungary, its first foreign market, in 1992. Today, Red Bull sells 4 billion cans of energy drinks each year in over 160 countries. So how does Red Bull do it? The answer: differently than others. For years, Red Bull offered just one product, Red Bull Energy Drink, in one size?a slick silver 250 ml. (8.3 oz.) can with a European look and feel. Red Bull?s ingredients?amino acid taurine, B-complex vitamins, caffeine, and carbohydrates?mean it?s highly caffeinated and energizing, so fans have called it ?liquid cocaine? and ?speed in a can.? Over the last decade, Red Bull has introduced three additional products: Red Bull Sugarfree, Red Bull Energy Shots, and Red Bull Cola?each slight variations of the original energy drink. Since its beginning, Red Bull has used little traditional advertising and no print, billboards, banner ads, or Super Bowl spots. While the company runs minimal television commercials, the animated spots and tagline ?Red Bull Gives You Wiiings? are meant to amuse its young audience and connect in a nontraditional, nonpushy manner. Red Bull builds buzz about the product through grassroots, viral marketing tactics, starting with its ?seeding program? that microtargets trendy shops, clubs, bars, and stores. As one Red Bull executive explained, ?We go to on-premise accounts first, because the product gets a lot of visibility and attention. It goes faster to deal with individual accounts, not big chains and their authorization process.? Red Bull is easily accepted at clubs because ?in clubs, people are open to new things.? Once Red Bull has gained some momentum in the bars, it next moves into convenience stores located near colleges, gyms, health-food stores, and supermarkets, prime locations for its target audience of men and women aged 16 to 29. Red Bull has also been known to target college students directly by providing them with free cases of Red Bull and encouraging them to throw a party. Eventually, Red Bull moves into restaurants and finally, into supermarkets. Red Bull?s marketing efforts strive to build its brand image of authenticity, originality, and community in several ways. First, Red Bull targets opinion leaders by sampling its product, a lot. Free Red Bull energy drinks are available at sports competitions, in limos before award shows, and at exclusive after-parties. Free samples are passed out on college campuses and city streets, given to those who look like they need a lift. Next, Red Bull aligns itself with a wide variety of extreme sports, athletes, teams, events, and artists (in music, dance, and film). From motor sports to mountain biking, snowboarding to surfing, dancing to extreme sailing, there is no limit to the craziness of a Red Bull event or sponsorship. A few have become notorious for taking originality and extreme sporting to the limit, including the annual Flugtag. At Flugtag, contestants build homemade flying machines that must weigh less than 450 pounds, including the pilot. Teams then launch their contraptions off a specially designed Red Bull branded ramp, 30 feet above a body of water. Crowds of up to 300,000 young consumers cheer on as the contestants and their ?planes? stay true to the brand?s slogan: ?Red Bull gives you wings!? Another annual event, the Red Bull Air Race, tests the limits of sanity. Twelve of the world?s top aerobatic stunt pilots compete in a 3.5 mile course through a low-level aerial racetrack made up of air-filled Red Bull branded pylons 33 feet apart and reaching 65 feet in height. In other words, pilots fly planes with a 26-foot wingspan through a gap of 33 feet at 230 mph. These Red Bull?branded planes crash occasionally, but to date no fatalities have ever occurred. Red Bull?s Web site provides consumers with information about how to find Red Bull events, videos of and interviews with Red Bull?sponsored athletes, and clips of amazing feats that will be tested next. For example, Bull Stratos is a mission one man is undertaking to free-fall from 120,000 feet, or 23 miles high. The jump will be attempted from the edge of space and, if successful, it will mark the first time a human being has reached supersonic speeds in a free fall. Red Bull buys traditional advertising once the market is mature and the company needs to reinforce the brand to its consumers. As one Red Bull executive explained, ?Media is not a tool that we use to establish the market. It is a critical part. It?s just later in the development.? Red Bull?s ?anti-marketing? IMC strategy has been extremely successful connecting with its young consumers. It falls directly in line with the company?s mission to be seen as unique, original, and rebellious?just as its Generation Y consumers want to be viewed.

Questions 1. What are Red Bull?s greatest strengths and risks as more companies (like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Monster) enter the energy drink category and gain market share?

2. Should Red Bull do more traditional advertising? Why or why not?

3. Discuss the effectiveness of Red Bull?s sponsorships, for example, Bull Stratos. Is this a good use of Red Bull?s marketing budget? Where should the company draw the line?

PART 3- APA FORMAT- 250 WORDS- 3 REFERENCES

Frankly, many popular stories and grade-school lessons about U.S. History are myths that Americans have perpetuated throughout the centuries. In some cases, they may be half-truths, while in others, they just never happened. How many of us learned about George Washington chopping down a cherry tree, and his being unable to lie about it? It is possible that some of these stories have remained fixed in our culture because they produce good citizens, while in others, we relieve our guilt for real or perceived past transgressions. Whatever the case, these myths exist in great measure.

For this forum, you will need to Google ?U.S. history myths? and choose a particular myth. Try to mix it up a little bit — if your peers have examined George Washington’s teeth a number of times, choose something a little different. In a minimum of 250 words, introduce your myth and the reality, then explain why you think this it has been immortalized in the American consciousness. For this last part, there is no wrong or right answer. More than anything, I am looking for your opinion.

*Note: These clips are all on YouTube. If you cannot access YouTube from a network that blocks access, you will need to use a different network or borrow another computer to complete the assignment. If neither is possible, contact your professor for instructions for an alternate assignment for writing a research paper on the Complexity Theory of Leadership.
Instructions:
Discuss what leadership model(s) best describe the approach to leadership exhibited in the video clip.
Trait Model
Behavioral Model
Contingency Model (identify which one?Fiedler Model, Path-Goal Model, and/or Normative Decision Model)
Influence (Power) (identify which one?Reward Power, Coercive Power, Legitimate Power, Referent Power and/or Expert Power)
Transformational Leadership
Devote a section in your paper to each of the video clips. Each section should have a heading with the name of the video clip followed by the leadership style/styles portrayed. For example: Return of the Jedi(Coercive Power).
For each of the video clips, you will need to use at least one of the leadership models listed above, and a few have more than one portrayed. Also you must use of all five of the leadership styles at least once in your paper.
Analyze the effectiveness of this leadership approach. Give examples of how specific behaviors or attitudes illustrate specific tenets of the leadership model you have chosen. Defend your answer with examples from the clip and references to the appropriate background material.
Is this leadership style appropriate for this situation? Do you think it will be effective? Why or why not? Under what conditions might this approach be most appropriate? Most inappropriate?
There is not one right answer to which leadership style is being represented in each clip?it is open to interpretation. However, the critical thinking in this assignment hinges on how well you defend your choice of leadership style. Make a strong and logical argument by using examples from the clips to demonstrate the characteristics of the style as presented in the background materials.
Keep in mind there may be more than one leadership style represented in a video clip.
You may want to do additional research to supplement what is on the background page. Outside research does not substitute for citing and referencing the background material, but may add additional support and depth to your arguments.
