Scenario

Janet Johnson, an African American woman, has been working at the Tennessee Hydroelectric plant for 15 years. During that time, his performance reviews have been exemplary. She decided to apply for the new plant foreman position. Although she felt that she was eminently qualified for the position, she also was growing tired of a certain good old boy culture at the plant. For years, the plant has had a culture of highly lewd ?jokes,? and many of the employees had also engaged in inappropriate touching of female employees. The plant had an anti-harassment policy on record, but Janet?s boss shrugged and said ?boys will be boys? when she reported the harassment to him.

Competition for the position was fierce. But ultimately, Jose Martinez, a Chilean man, received the position. Jose had 7 years of experience. Unbeknownst to the applicants the promotion board secretly ran a credit check on the applicants. Janet credit score came in as lower as average, and this factored into the board?s decision. Although he met the qualifications of the position, one of the hiring managers told Janet in confidence that Janet was the most qualified person for the job. And the other managers had applied a racial preference on Jose?s behalf due to there never having been a Latino manager at the plant even though Latino?s represented 35% of employees at the plant. Janet sues the plant for disparate treatment, disparate impact, and sexual harassment under Title VII.

Questions
2. List the elements of disparate treatment and apply them to this case. Can Janet prove a prima facie case? How would the plant rebuff these charges? Who would ultimately prevail?
3. List the elements of a disparate impact case and apply them to this case? Will Janet prevail on this charge?
4. List the elements of the sexual harassment case and apply them to this case? Can the plant establish an affirmative defense?
5. If the plant argues that it applied a racial preference to Jose to correct a manifest imbalance at the plant of underutilization of certain minorities, will the plant prevail? Why or why not?
6. Was it legal to use the credit check as a factor in the promotion decision the way that it was done here? Why or why not?

Much of what occurs in marriages and families is described as love or the absence of love. We sometimes say that we are ?in love? or are falling in love with someone. Since the word love is also used to describe our feelings about things such as a certain kind of food (?I love chocolate ice cream.?) or objects such as a car or a movie (e.g., ?I loved the movie we saw last night.?), people who study relationships have suggested that human love can take different forms or be one of several different types.
Consider the four different types of love outlined near the beginning of Chapter 6: storge, philia, eros, and agape. In an essay of 500-750 words, include the following:
Describe the relationships of at least two different couples you know who exemplify different types of love. (For example, one couple may have an eros type of love for each other while the other may have an agape type of love.)
Explain why you think each relationship you described is the type that you think it is. If you are married, have been married, or if you were to marry someone, do you, did you, or would you want your love for the other person to be of one or another of these types? Why?
Provide a minimum of three to five scholarly sources to support your analysis and conclusion.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400?600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.
Part I
As a system administrator who is responsible for your company’s network, you understand that operating systems (OS) are various. Discuss the following queries:
Why are there so many versions of OS?
What are the features that make them different?
Explain the pros and cons of each.
Part II
Familiarize yourself with the historical evolution of OS. Select 2, and then talk about them in terms of various aspects (e.g., encryption, size, speed, memory, video, and security). Respond to the following 2-part question:
How can the evolution of OS (1) benefit an organization and (2) cause harm to an organization?

In this Assignment, you are going to compare depressants, stimulants, and hallucinogens, and identify a specific theoretical explanation for why an individual would choose to use one or more of these drugs.
You are to identify one drug from each category (see examples below). In a minimum 4-page paper, you are to analyze and evaluate the differences between the drugs, including composition, manufacture/cultivation, how they are used, and their physical and psychological effects on the human body. You will then identify one specific theory, such as anomie, differential association, social control, cultural deviance, labeling, behaviorism, behavior modification, or cognitive learning that you believe best explains why an individual would choose to use one or more of your chosen drugs.
A sample of drugs listed in the three categories is shown below, but you may also choose a drug not on the list. Although this paper is on a topic of your choosing, it is recommended that if you identify and choose a drug not on the list below, you have it approved by the instructor prior to beginning the Assignment.
Depressants Stimulants Hallucinogens
Alcohol Amphetamines Dimethyltryptamine (DMT)
Barbiturates Caffeine Ecstasy (MDMA)
Benzodiazepines Cocaine Ketamine (Special K)
Fentanyl Crack Cocaine Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
Heroin Herbal Stimulants Mescaline
Methaqualone Methamphetamines Phencyclidine (PCP)
Morphine Nicotine Psilocybin & Psilocyn
Opium
Oxycodone

This week you will be compiling a summary of potential topics. In Week Two, you will choose one topic and write two different essays aimed at using the same or similar information and research targeting two very different audiences: public policy advocates and business executives. To get you started, we will use this discussion to explore the various unique and overlapping needs of these groups. Pick a topic that has been in the news lately. Compose two short summaries of how or why this topic would be of interest to public policy advocates and business executives. Keep in mind that you choose one topic to address two audiences.

Your initial post should be at least 350 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates? posts by Day 7. Each response should be at least 125 words long. Consider how Section 1.4 in Chapter One on Understanding Genre might affect a choice of topic for different audiences.

It is hard to define ?severe and multiple disabilities? and the terms often cause confusion, because most states placed such children in segregated special classes often labeled ?severe and multiply handicapped? as if the two groups constituted one group. In the IDEA definition, ?multiple disabilities? means concomitant impairments (such as mental retardation and blindness; mental retardation and orthopedic impairment), the combination of which causes such severe educational problems that the child cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for one of the impairments (Caldwell, 2005).
In order to keep a student?s interest in curriculum while meeting their academic level needs, the teacher should first determine ? in collaboration with other team members (e.g., OT, PT, speech therapist, parents, etc.) ? the student?s needs and then use differentiated instruction ? various teaching strategies, scaffolding, assistive technology – and allow learners to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways. The teacher should develop sensory-based activities which target auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. Strategies for math include: visual and graphic descriptions of problems, systematic and explicit instruction, student think-aloud (e.g., predicting, picturing, questioning, etc.), and group activities (heterogeneous ability groupings) (Coleman et al., 2015; Varsamis, & Agaliotis, 2011). For English language arts, the teacher should provide multiple soecially adapted books and texts (each appropriate for the student?s abilities), read interactively one-on-one and with small groups of children, and break assignments into smaller, manageable parts. Personally, I would also use toys, music and art to keep students interested in the curriculum.

An IEP is as unique as each individual student. Special considerations in the design of an IEP is paramount whether the student has one or multiple disabilities. In content areas as math and English language arts many accommodations and modifications must be written in the IEP for a student with multiple disabilities as well as a student with one disability. More accommodations and modifications are likely to be needed for a student with multiple disabilities than a student with one disability. The goals that are set for students with multiple disabilities and student with one disability are very different which means there must be special considerations in the design of the IEP. When writing an IEP for a student with one or multiple disabilities the present levels of performance must be considered. Math and English are requirements for high school assessments; therefore, it is important to use best practices for the outcomes for a student with one or multiple disabilities and ensure it is written in the IEP. Alternate goals can be written in the IEP to meet the student?s outcome expectations. It is important for the teacher to know what tools to use to help the student achieve while making adaptations to meet the student?s instructional support and functional skills. Students with disabilities will benefit from prompting, feedback, manipulatives, graphic organizers, vocabulary, peer support, literary skills, math functions on their level, calculators. It is important to keep the student interested focused on academic by making a game to promote learning, expose them to new interesting things and involving peers can also be beneficial. Students appear to learn faster when it seems like fun to them.

The assigned readings for this week discuss how and why we address different audiences using different styles of writing or rhetorical situations.
Select three potential topics that you might write an essay about, and that would apply to both a public audience and a business audience. Review the ?Rhetorical Context and the Audience? discussion for ideas. One of these topics will be the basis for your essay assignment in Week Three and Week Five. For each of the three topics, write a 350 word summary that contains:

A description of the topic.
An analysis of why the issue is important to a public policy advocates that includes at least one source appropriate to the audience and concludes with at least one specific action the audience might take.
An analysis of why the issue is important to a business audience that includes at least one source appropriate to the audience and concludes with at least one specific action the audience might take.
Be sure to use APA style (including a cover page and reference pages) and include proper citations for all sources. Use direct quotations, paraphrasing, and/or summary when including ideas and materials from outside sources, including the text and other readings and videos.
