After more than 7 years, the airport project is complete. The Carson County Regional Airport was schedule to be complete in 5 years, but funding problems delayed the purchase of big machinery needed for a bulk of the project work. When asked to provide updates to the community officials, you put your best foot forward, and you were transparent that funding was the main impediment to the project success. While the project was two years late, the Carson County area now has a gateway to connect it to the big airports, especially Chicago O?Hare. When having a discussion with a colleague, you state the following: ?We had our bumps and bruises, and our growing pains, but we delivered ? albeit a couple years later. We met the project objectives, which matters the most. Their airport is complete, and as I look outside my window, a United Airlines jet is landing. That?s all that matters to me!?

While it?s true that Carson County now has a working regional airport, it?s estimated that at least 30% of the airport?s cost ($34M) were consumed by change fees. To your knowledge, some of the procurement contracts are still open, even a couple months after the project closed. This means the vendors are still collecting payments for machinery that has not been returned. It?s basically collecting dust. You?ll get to it, but it might take a couple more months.

Please address the following questions:

What is your take on whether this project is a success or failure?

You?re hired by the city leaders to review the procurement process. What might you include in your final report?

What is your take on the point made about providing a huge travel benefit for the Carson County area? Is this a legitimate point? Please explain.

To pay tribute to a person, group of people, institution or an idea.
To practice planning and delivering a commemorative speech.
To give students experience in speaking from manuscript.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Your tribute speech gives you an opportunity to formally honor a person, group, institution or idea. Choose someone, something, or an idea that has been particularly influential in your life. This could be someone very close to you, like a family member, or it could be someone you?ve met only once or even have never met. Maybe you came across an idea in a book that really had a profound influence on you.

For example, you might honor someone who served as a mentor to you as you were going through high school or college, praise a person or group who has made a difference in your life or the lives of others, eulogize a loved one who has died, celebrate the anniversary of your school, business, or church, or memorialize a significant event (e.g. ending of Vietnam War).

REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION CRITERIA:
You must have an audience of at least 6 people over the age of 16, including your camera operator. You should pan your audience before you begin your speech, begin your speech without stopping or splicing the video, then pan the audience again at the conclusion of your speech. Failure to have less than the required 6 audience members will result in failing the assignment.
A preparation outline is NOT required. This speech should be written out and delivered from manuscript (word-for-word). The manuscript should be typed, triple-spaced, large enough font to be seen easily, and be printed out on only one side of the page. Each page should end with a complete thought. You can mark up your manuscript with reminders for eye-contact, breathing, smiling, holding up visual aids, or use a highlighter to distinguish certain points.
Use language imaginatively and use this opportunity to further experiment with using the language devices discussed in Chapter 12 of the text.
Rehearse your speech thoroughly. Practice your speech in front of a mirror or friends to increase eye-contact, enthusiasm, sincerity and conversational delivery. Demonstrate that you know the subject of your speech well by not being overly dependent on your manuscript.
Visual aids are optional for this speech, however using a visual can really add a personal touch or make the speech more memorable.
Attach your typed manuscript to the assignment in Connect. After you submit the video, there is a place to attach documents. Browse your computer to find your speech manuscript. In order for your speech to count as ?on time? you must submit your typed manuscript at the time you submit your video and by the due date on the calendar.
Practice your speech several times before you deliver your speech in front of your audience. Check the timing to know what will fit in the 3-4 minute time limit and make cuts as necessary.
After you submit your speech video, you should watch your video again, and complete the self-evaluation on Connect. This counts as part of your speech grade.
This assignment is worth a possible 50 points. Evaluation criteria include: Manuscript, Introduction, Organization & Flow, Vivid Details, Practiced Delivery, Conclusion, Time Limit, and Audience.

For this assignment, focus on the group of students in your Program of Study.

Scenario

You have decided that you would like to start a business. You need to secure funding for your business idea in order to launch it, so you have organised a presentation for a group of potential investors. If they think that you have identified a business opportunity they would like to invest in, they will invite you to present your business plan at a later date.

You will research local businesses to understand the local business market and to see whether there is a gap in the market that your new business could fill. In order to do this, you will need to consider both current trends and the current business environment, and their impact on businesses.

You will need to produce a presentation summarising the local business environment and a leaflet assessing the factors that could affect the success of your start-up idea. Remember that you need to keep a list of your sources of information.

Task 1

Factors and trends affecting business

The potential investors want to know how the business environment and current trends are likely to affect your start-up business?s chances of success. You will need to research and collect information on the local and national factors which affect the business environment.

Your presentation should include information on the likely effect of the following factors on a start-up business:
local factors (e.g. competitors)
national factors (e.g. political factors).

You will need to include a section in the leaflet which explains how changes in the current business environment may impact on a start-up business.

Your leaflet should inform your audience about current trends and how they affect start-up businesses. Research and comment on your sources of information for each of the following:
social trends
technology trends
ethical trends
environmental trends.

Use examples of each trend to explain how these will impact on your start-up business.

To support your argument, you need to demonstrate how these trends have affected another start-up business. Select a business from your area that is comparable to your business idea in terms of sector and size. Then select two trends from the list above and compare their impact on the existing start-up business you have selected. To do this, you will need to identify the similarities and the differences between the impacts of these trends on the existing start-up business . This can be presented in table format.

The investors want to know whether your business idea is likely to succeed. Summarise your leaflet with an assessment of the current risks, opportunities and trends in the business environment that will affect your business idea. You should say how these factors in the business environment will affect your business. You will need to back this up with evidence from your research and show that you have used trustworthy and relevant sources of information.

Part two:

Here is your opportunity to dream! Choose a vacation destination anywhere in the world (to which you must fly) for a two week trip (assume you have vacation time from work to take the trip) that you would like to take exactly ten (10) years from today. This can either be an individual vacation, a couple trip or a family excursion, depending on your life circumstances. After you?ve picked your destination (dream big), determine the following:

Travel expenses for all members of the group
Lodging expenses for the entire time period of the trip
Estimate of daily food expenses
Make a list of activities that you would like to engage in every day of the trip. Determine a cost for each day?s activity list (for example, tickets to amusement parks, museum entrance fees, boat trips, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, entertainment venues, etc.)
Make a list and associated cost estimate of any other expenses that you believe should be included in a total cost estimate for your vacation (e.g., pet boarding, house sitting, airport parking fees, etc.)
Would only someone who makes a high income be able to afford this trip? Or would someone who makes the minimum wage be able to afford this trip?
NOTE: You must research all aspects of your list to substantiate your cost estimates; that is, you must demonstrate and/or document how you derived each cost estimate in the list.

After gathering and organizing all collected data, prepare a document describing your destination (including your reason for choosing that location), listing (and substantiating) all costs of the trip (this can be done in a table or bullet point format, but it must be clear and provide sufficient detail so that the reader understands your interest and passion for your vacation), and determining a total cost of your dream vacation from the time you leave to the time you return.

Assuming that your estimated total cost will grow by 2.5 percent per year (due to inflation), demonstrate how you would compute the expected future cost of your dream vacation.

Suppose that you can invest money every month into a fee free mutual fund and that this fund is expected to have a 10 percent nominal annual rate of return. Using your estimated future cost (including inflation) as a future value, determine the amount of money you must save each month for the next 10 years (i.e., 120 months) to achieve your goal. Then determine the monthly amount you must save if you delay your trip for an additional five years (that is, you will take the trip 15 years from today = 180 months) instead of 10 years from today (note: be sure to add 5 additional years of inflation to the estimated future cost). Write an explanation for your calculations so the reader is completely clear on how you derived your required monthly deposits.

Based on this numerical representation of your dream vacation, write a well contemplated critical analysis of your trip. For example, explore questions such as: is this something that you think is worth saving for, have you changed your mind after seeing the reality of the required sacrifice, are you rethinking the location or luxury level of your accommodations or daily outings, and so on.

Note that you must properly cite all reference sites that you used to collect data to estimate your costs value, etc.

Your response should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

Have you ever watched a movie in which the same scene was shown several times but as viewed by different individuals?
