(Already done file attached) Thesis: I am in the midst of getting to you feedback regarding your thesis paragraph, so if you haven’t heard from me yet, look for it soon.

(See the attached file and expending to 10pages) Review of Literature: I’m hoping most of you headed my advice and have already started in on your review of literature section. As mentioned this section is going keep you busy. It will include the time of finding, reading, and writing ten plus pages. Obviously use the internet but you will also need to track down some scholarly books.

…….

(5 pages) Research Design: The Research Design section is your opportunity to collect your own data and share your significant findings (that’s really what scientific inquiry refers to). Qualitative data would be, for example, interviews, either conducted by you or researching existing interviews online. Qualitative data can even be your own personal/professional experience. Quantitative data, you can quantify through numbers, like survey data (again, either designed and conducted by you, or by researching existing surveys online that refer and pertain to your topic). This is what I mean by choosing your own methodology; it would depend on what makes sense for you and your research.

…….

I’ll share some examples:

A former student was interested in the AIDS epidemic in Africa (core topic civic responsibility). According to this scientific inquiry, it made more sense for her to research existing data through statistics and percentages of this unfortunate epidemic so she utilized quantitative data for her Research Design.

Another student in a different class was also looking into the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Her core topic was leadership and she was interested in how humanitarian organizations could effectively communicate and organize with the governments. So she sent out emails to the various organizations asking specific questions about the relationship between them and the government. Out of the many e-mails she was able to get a couple of valuable responses forming the basis of her qualitative data.

…….

A third student was researching effective leadership principles (core topic leadership) so she conducted her own interviews with managers at her job regarding their own leadership style. These interviews are qualitative data and provided great information for her research.

Ultimately the Research Design Section will see you state specifically what type of data you collected and then the details on how you conducted the research. Then you share your significant findings after your explanation of data. You can have a Discussion section sharing your significant findings and how you made sense of your data. Give your perspectives and then go right into your Conclusion.

…….

This section really gives you the opportunity to make your paper unique and takes it a step further after your review of literature. This goes from simply describing existing research, to actually collecting data and critically analyzing your research.

If you think the statement is true, then show that it is true. On the other hand, if you think the statement is false, then give an example that disproves the statement.

  1. True or false. If all the coefficients a1a2, …, an in the objective function P = a1x1 + a2x2 + … + anxn are nonpositive, then the only solution of the problem is x1 = x2 = … = xn and P = 0.

  2. True or false. The pivot column of a simplex tableau identifies the variable whose value is to be decreased in order to increase the value of the objective function (or at least keep it unchanged).

  3. True or false. The ratio associated with the pivot row tells us by how much the variable associated with the pivot column can be increased while the corresponding point still lies in the feasible set.

  4. True or false. At any iteration of the simplex procedure, if it is not possible to compute the ratios or the ratios are negative, then one can conclude that the linear programming problem has no solution.

  5. True or false. If the last row to the left of the vertical line of the final simplex tableau has a zero in a column that is not a unit column, then the linear programming problem has infinitely many solutions.

  6. True or false. Suppose you are given a linear programming problem satisfying the conditions:

  • The objective function is to be minimized.

  • All the variables involved are nonnegative, and

  • Each linear constraint may be written so that the expression involving the variables is greater than or equal to a negative constant.

Then the problem can be solved using the simplex method to maximize the objective function P = –C.

  1. True or false. The objective function of the primal problem can attain an optimal value that is different from the optimal value attained by the dual problem.

Two important policy goals of the government and the Fed are to keep unemployment and inflation low, while at the same time making sure that GDP is increasing at an average of 3% per year. It is important to have the right mix of policies and that all the variables be timed perfectly.

Government is fiscal Policy and Federal is Monetary Policy. Monetary Policy is the one that cares if inflation gets out of hand.

Part 1: Assume that the country is in a period of high unemployment, interest rates are at almost zero, inflation is about 2% per year, and GDP growth is less than 2% per year.

  • Suggest how fiscal and monetary policy can move those numbers to an acceptable level keeping inflation the same.

  • What is the first action you would take as the president? As the chairman of the Fed? Why?

  • What would be your subsequent steps?

  • Make sure you include both the positive and negative effects of your actions, and include the trade-offs or opportunity costs.

Include the following concepts in your discussion:

  • Demand and supply of money  – (This is a Fed issue)

  • Interest rates – (This is a Fed issue)

  • The Phillips curve

  • Taxation – (This is a Government issue)

  • Government spending – (This is a Government issue)

  • Wages – (This is a Fed issue)

  • Costs of inflation – (This is a Fed issue)

  • The multiplier and the tax multiplier – (This is a Government issue)

  • The idea of tax rebates to stimulate the economy – (This is a Government issue)

Part 2: Assume that the country is in a budget deficit and carrying a very large debt. Discuss the dangers of a high debt to GDP ratio and a growing budget deficit. Would this affect any policy changes you discussed in Part 1?

Describe the concepts and measurement of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment, and inflation.

Explain what is meant by “business cycles” and “economic growth and describe the factors that contribute to each.

Demonstrate understanding of the relevance and impact of macroeconomics and how it impacts politics, the workplace, and people.

Roxio and the Resurrection of Napster

Under the leadership of Chris Gorog, Napster was riding high as their fiscal year 2007 drew to a close. oGrog’s extensive experience in the media and entertainment industry shaped and contributed to their success.  While Chairman and CEO of Roxio, he had taken that firm public in 2001.

Napster is considered part of the key software shaping the Internet.  This software made it possible for industries to copy and play music for free.  By-passing the expensive music industry infrastructure, Napster capitalized on the growth of portable music systems and a lack of clear legal precedent against music sharing.  After four years of legal battles   with the Recording Industry Association of America, Napster filed for bankruptcy.

As Roxio’s CEO, Gorog are company to a media company.  RElaunched in 2003 as a legal download music provider, they went public in 2005.  They approached the market differently this time by partnering with Microsoft and music producers.

Uncertain of the future of the online music industry, Roxio maintained their market leadership in the CD-and DVD-burning software (bundled with all new PCs operated by Microsoft XP). Their dynamic strategy was further demonstrated when Gorog sold Roxio’s software business in January 2004 and then renamed the surviving online-music company Napster.

This dynamic industry has seen the entry of Yahoo! (in 2005) and stiff competition from iTunes.  Unsure of what industry business model would be effective, Gorog returned to the free model (in addition to the subscription download model). Though this time it would legal with Napster paying the record labels form their advertising revenues.  Subscriber growth on Napster continued to decline.  And since spinoff from Adaptec through April 2007, Napster has never shown a profit.

1. Please discuss the different types of strategies Napster used through their various Resurrections. (Please use the strategies discussed in Chapters 5 and 6 and provide some details).

Risk & Safety Science for Engineers

Instructions given by lecturer:

Identify: EITHER any activity you carry out or have witnessed or know or have read about, OR any safety event you have witnessed, heard about, or read about. If you select an activity, predict and analyse the potential risks of accidents or other harmful outcomes in terms of possible errors. If you select an event or accident which has occurred then analyse this incident itself in terms of the human and organisational errors which occurred. This could also be an opportunity to align coursework with future career plans, i.e., look at issues in the domain you intend to work in after graduation (oil & gas, construction, etc).

…….

Your analysis should include use of several of the methods and representational forms covered in this class. These could include, but are not restricted to: risk matrices; task or function analyses; accident models (such as linear flow charts, epidemiological and ergonomics frameworks, swiss cheese, event tree, fault tree, bow tie); human error identification/quantification systems (such as HAZOP, GEMS, TRACEr, HEART etc).
The activity or event analysed could include: everyday activities such as driving, bike riding, cooking etc); special activities known to you (sailing, skiing, pot holing etc); activities of family or friends or that you have read about or imagine; activities you can observe (bus driving, construction worker, club security etc); incidents or accidents that you have experienced; incidents or accidents that you have read about. You may find it more interesting and a richer and easier exercise if the activity/incident you take has a combination of physical, cognitive and social components, but at the same time should not be so large and diffuse that you cannot focus.

The coursework could include: a text description of th e activity or incident; some task/activity/function description and analysis (ie what should be done); an analysis of the potential (or actual) human and organisational errors involved (active and latent); a breakdown of the types of these errors; possibly some idea as to likelihood (ie maybe some quantification); a justification for the approach and tools you have used; and your view as to their value and ease of use – or otherwise!

…….

However, the intention of this coursework is to give practice in using tools and analysing/assessing risks and human reliability/error, and in seeing how difficult this is to do, so there is no one right or wrong way to go about this assignment. I will be interested in what you come up with. It gives an opportunity to try the various approaches and tools looked at in class to describe, represent and analyse activities, tasks, incidents/accidents and actual organisation failure and human error or potential for these. I am mainly evaluating your knowledge, including understanding strengths and limitations, of what approaches are appropriate and tools and techniques available, and how to use and report these. Once you have decided on your topic/focus and possibly tools and techniques I am happy to quickly give advice in a break from the class or just afterwards. Where you use any relevant literature, published sources in journal articles and books should be cited and fully referenced. Whilst web resources can be cited these should not be the majority of sources and these need full details of location and date accessed.

The assignment should be of between 5 and 10 pages. The majority should be graphical or tabular analyses. Text will account for at most 25% of the final grade and should be roughly in the range of 500-1000 words. Since producing graphical charts on computer may not be easy for all of you I would accept legible hand drawn ones.

…….
