Government Current Event and Analysis
You will need to find, read and respond to an article regarding a political or legal issue in the United States. In writing your response, you should link the article in some way to the particular topic (unit) that we are studying in class. The article must be from a PRINT MEDIA source, and must be at least 500 words. (Don’t spend time counting- this is to get you to understand that it is not simply a one paragraph news-blurb). These articles can be news stories, opinion pieces, longer investigations or editorial columns. They may not be articles that I have given you in class.
For our purposes, Print Media includes newspapers, magazines, or scholarly journals. Things like- Time, US News, The Economist, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Washington Times, The Atlantic, Washington Post, etc. These may be accessed online or as paper copies. Print Media DOES NOT include NPR transcripts online, Fox News online, CNN.com, etc. In other words, it should be from sources whose main focus is printed matter, not broadcast journalism.
You can find all of these resources at infotrac newsstand from the University Library
For each article, you need to type, and double space your response. It should be no more 2-3 pages, in 12 point font, times new roman. TURN IN A HARD COPY IN CLASS. It must also be turned in to turnitin.com by 11:59 pm of the date due. The assignment is not considered complete until both have been turned in
Your response should include:
• Name and Date at the Top of the page
• The Author, Title, Source, Date.
• A short summary of the article (2 or 3 sentences)
• Your response to the details of the article.
• Your analysis may include answers to questions like-
What are the main issues brought forth? What policy is being discussed? How does this relate to what is taking place in government currently? Historically? What point is the author trying to make? Is there a clear bias? How do you see it? What do you think of the points that the author made? In a column- does the author stretch the truth? What point are they trying to make? How does this tie into what we are studying?
Example:
Mark Schill
September 1, 2015.
Parker, Ashley. “As Donald Trump and Jorge Ramos Clash, Latino News Media Airs Its Offense,” New York Times 8.26.15
This article explains how Spanish Language media has focused more of its coverage of Mr. Trump on his views on immigration than the “mainstream” media. It suggests that while Trump has treated the Spanish language media poorly, they have focused predominantly on his commentary regarding the labeling of immigrants and the building of a wall. (END OF SUMMARY) The issue calls into question the statements made by Trump in trying to galvanize the country in his surprisingly popular campaign. It seemingly divides the country even more as Mr. Trump is attacking what is assumed to be an important voting block in the 2016 campaign. It also is interesting because it shows that some media forces seem to be becoming more advocates for certain groups, rather than unbiased reporters of events.
You should continue writing your response so that you fully analyze the details of the article, as well as analyze how this is an example civil liberties and/or civil rights in this country.

Analyze the odd network behavior provided in the text sheet entitled “Network Attacks and IDS/IPS Analysis”, describe the attacks, and then describe how to prevent them.

Scenario:
Aim Higher College’s network engineers and system administrators have reported a number of odd network behaviors and system outages. A variety of traffic has been captured in response to this. In addition, network engineers report that the college is seeing very high levels of traffic from a wide variety of hosts and that this traffic is causing outages for both the college’s Web servers and periodic slowdowns or failure of its external commodity Internet links. This data is provided to you in the text sheet entitled “Network Attacks and IDS/IPS Analysis”.

Tasks:
Aim Higher College system administrators have requested that you review network traffic to determine whether the institution’s intrusion detection system (IDS) and intrusion prevention system (IPS) can be used to prevent inbound attacks that are being detected. Your manager has requested that you analyze the detected attacks and create a report that describes each attack, explains the threat it presents, and if an IDS or an IPS is suited to dealing with it.

Specifically, your report should include:
A description or name for each attack
A description of what the attack is trying to do
Whether an IDS could or should be used to detect it and whether it can be blocked using an IPS

Review the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators Web page in the resources. Briefly review the “2020 LHI Topics.” You can see the data and the impacts, determinants, and disparities.

Choose one leading health indicator and write a 1–2 page paper in which you outline an implementation program you might develop as a health care administrator, on a local level, to address the indicator at all levels of the socioecologic model. In your implementation plan outline, be sure to indicate:
•What is currently being done.
•What needs to be done.
•What role leadership plays.
•What data would be necessary to show success.

You may want to use the following optional resources for this assignment:
•U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s National Prevention Strategy, pages 28–50. This was released in 2011 to provide an integrated guide for improving the health of the nation. It identifies health care priorities that look at a national plan in relation to what needs to be done and what data would show success. It may be useful to get you thinking about what you might use for your program.
•In 2008, Trust for America’s Health first identified Ten Top Priorities for Prevention, and now keeps them current on their Web site.
•Healthy People 2020 identifies their topics and objectives, which might have additional information for you.

    MLA or APA Format Style

In a well-written and thoughtfully organized essay, answer ONE of the questions listed below. The essay is to be SEVEN to EIGHT pages in length, double-spaced, with 1” margins and 12-point Times or Times Roman font. You must number your pages and use a proper citation method. If you choose in-text parenthetical citations, i.e. (Hayden, 209), you must include a bibliography in addition to your seven to eight pages of text. If you choose Chicago-style footnotes using your Microsoft Word footnote function, you do not need an additional bibliography. Excellent essays will demonstrate proficiency with all of the reading assignments since the midterm and draw smart connections between the readings, films, and lectures. Be sure to establish a clear historical context in your answer.

1) Post-World War II United States urbanization patterns can be characterized by the interrelated processes of suburbanization and segregation. What social and political factors contributed to the growth of American suburbia after World War II? How did suburban life represent Cold War domestic ideologies? Postwar gender roles? Ideas about race and class? Which federal policies promoted the growth of suburbia? How were these policies implemented and what were their implications for the American inner city? How has suburbia proven a disappointing manifestation of the “American dream?” Be sure to consider suburbia’s relationship to consumerism, family life, and the construction of living space. You might consider drawing upon the Dolores Hayden’s Building Suburbia, Jon C. Teaford’s The Twentieth Century American City, lecture materials, and other course readings and in-class films.

2) United States cities, since the 1960s, can be understood in the political economic terms of deindustrialization, globalization, and postmodernity.  Giant shifts in the world economy have affected how our cities grow and change. How do you characterize these processes? How do these massive political and economic processes affect the American city? What cities experience this change most drastically? How have urban identities changed? Hal Rothman’s Playing the Odds, Jon C. Teaford’s The Twentieth Century American City, and Dolores Hayden’s Building Suburbia along with lectures, films, and other course materials will help you construct an essay addressing the social, cultural, and economic features of the post-1960s American city.

More on the GRADING CRITERIA

In addition to the grading rubric note above, the following is important information about this assignment:

1. WRITING QUALITY: Grammar, Verb Tenses, Pronoun Use, Spelling, Punctuation, and Writing Competency.

Remember: spell-check; then proof read. Better yet, have a friend or colleague read your completed document before submitting it for grading. When I have to submit a paper, I print it and then read it out loud to myself. It is amazing the number of errors discovered when I do this because there is simply no way we can catch all of the mistakes when we are trying to read from a computer screen. Also, when we read it out loud, we can also hear how well or how poorly it “reads” to another person. It should sound like a professional report, not like a casual conversation.

I have a few hang-ups about the following errors and you will be marked down for them: there is not their, your is not you’re, its (possessive) is not it’s (it is), too is not to or two, cite is not site or sight, and who should be used after an individual, not that. For example, “the person WHO made the speech” not “the person THAT made the speech.”

Also, in a professional paper, one does not use contractions (doesn’t, don’t, etc.) and one does not use the personal you or your. Therefore, use the impersonal as I have done in the sentence immediately above. It is more business-professional than saying, “Also in a professional paper you don’t use contractions.”

BEST Option: Submit your document to UMUC’s Effective Writing Center (EWC).

2. REFERENCES

Part of the requirements for this research assignment is that you include a list of references used for your research. A minimum of three (3) sources must be included in this list of which a minimum of two (2) of these sources must come from the UMUC Online Library databases, other University research libraries and/or material included in this course.  (EXCLUDING Wikipedia & the text book as references.  These may be used after meeting the minimum # of references.)

The sources in your reference list must be written using APA formatting. There is a link to APA Tutorial in the “Course Content” area of our classroom. It is highly recommended you refer to this source as you prepare your research document.

3. WORD PROCESSING

Use Microsoft Word – any version or Openoffice Word processing (it’s free). If you do not have either, contact me ASAP! If you send me a Microsoft Works document I will not be able to open it and I will return it ungraded! If you do not have Microsoft Word or Openoffice work processing, you can save your paper as a “rich text file” (.rtf) or pdf file.

I do not like to appear to be so strict about this; however, every term there is at least one student who does not read these instructions carefully and sends me an assignment that I cannot open.

Use 1″ margins top, bottom, left and right sides.

Use Times New Roman, font size 12.

Use double spacing.

Important Note: For ease of reading, your document must contain appropriate headings and subheadings. Headings and sub-headings are a requirement of this research assignment. Headings and subheadings should be placed at the left margin. The use of headings and subheadings are a terrific way to help you organize your research paper.

NOTE:  The MS Word spelling and grammar checker is NOT an effective tool for finding spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. I suggest you use the UMUC Effective Writing Center (EWC) or someone you can trust to read your document prior to posting it for grading. You can expect to lose a significant number of points if your document contains numerous spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. This information can also be found as  “Term Paper Topics & Grading Rubric” found in the “Course Content” area of our classroom.

4. COVER PAGE

A cover page must be the first page of your document, not a separate attachment! In the center of the page, in this order, double-spaced, include the following information:

Your Name

FINC 331

Title of the Research Paper

Date

Nothing else needs to be added to the cover page.

5. REFERENCE LIST

A reference list must be included as the last page of your document. This list must comply with APA formatting requirements.

6.  PEER EVALUATION FORM-  Completed by each member of the Group.
