MATH 135 Term Project.

The point of this project is to make an educated guess (inference) about a specific population, using statistics and statistical methods. Since this is the election year we will use a topic that is relevant to the current event. As you complete this project I hope you will see how the concept we learn can be applied to real life situation.

STEPS
1. Population and how you phrase your question:
Pick a presidential candidate that you’re interested to study and formulate a question for your survey. Your questions can be something like:
– Who do you vote for?
– Did you vote for Clinton or Trump?

Note that you need to pick one candidate as your topic, for example if your topic is Clinton, then every vote for her is a yes, and everything else (Trump or a third party) count as a no.

2. Null and Alternative Hypothesis.

Pick a % value for your null hypothesis that you think the candidate will receive. For example you believe Trump will get 42% of the vote. Briefly explain why you decide to choose that alternative hypothesis. Alternately you can wait after the result is announced and use the actual number.

3. Sampling
I will not accept convenience sampling, like Facebook. Collect the desired data. Describe when, where, and how the data was obtained. Try to collect from a wide variety of population group to avoid bias in your sample. (i.e Students, White collar, Blue collar, Young Adult, Elder …etc…). Sample size at least 50

4. Descriptive Statistics
Calculate p hat(sample %), confirm np≥5 n(1-p)>5, give the variance and standard deviation of p hat.

5. Graph
Bar graph. 1st two bars: % in category of focus from null hypothesis, and % in other. 2nd two bars: % in category of focus from sample, and % in other. The first pair(y/n) is from the null hypothesis, the second pair(y/n) is from the sample.

6. Confidence Intervals
Create a 95% confidence interval of p.

7. Hypothesis Test
Do a test at the 5% level of significance. Find your critical value. Compute your test statistic. Compute your p-value. Make a decision to reject the null hypothesis or not.

8. Conclusion
Finally, tell us, the audience what this rejection or non-rejection means for your population, in understandable terms. If you like, you can state any interesting facts/ideas/thoughts about your project. The project must be turned in by the last day of class, no exception. You can turn in a hand written project or typed, but it must be clean, clear and concise to receive full grade.

Extra credit:
15%: if all items on your project are typed (you will need to figure out how to do the chart on the computer i.e Excel). You can earn up to 10% extra on this project depend on well you present your project (clear chart, professional layout …etc…)

Final Assignment History Due November 19
Assignment: A Final Research Project will be due by Sunday night on Week 13 of the class at 11:55PM. The project will require the student to produce a scholarly research paper on any approved topic of his/her choice which covers any time period between colonization and Reconstruction. This topic will need to be approved by the facilitator by the end of Week 10. The paper will be 8-10 pages in length excluding the Title, Abstract, and References page. In other words, the body of the paper must be 8-10 pages in length. The Title, Abstract and References page is in addition to this requirement. A minimum of ten (10) academic sources will need to be used and it is highly encouraged that the student uses a combination of primary and secondary sources and all must be cited and listed in accordance with the current APA format issued at the time this course is offered.

What I would like to write about: For the Final Research Project, I will be covering the topic of colonization. More specifically, when Christopher Columbus traveled to what we now call America and discovered that there were in fact people living here and they had their own language and their own trading system. He wanted to learn the way that the natives worked and how they had lived on this so called new land that he had “discovered”. He wanted to learn how he could bring his people over from England, and teach them how to live just like the natives did for so long. The reason I picked this topic specifically, is because we all have to ask ourselves how we got to where we are now. It is interesting to me how so long ago, Christopher sailed the ocean blue to find a new trading route to China, but instead found this fantastic place we call home. I have found numerous things about Christopher Columbus that i did not know before doing the research for my Final Research Project. One is that he was convinced that he had landed in Asia. He saw the natives and the land and it gave him the idea that he landed in Asia. Another thing i did not know about him, is that when he got sent back to Spain, he was sent back in chains and shackles. The Spanish saw the way he treated the natives and thought that it was to brutal and harsh. So he went to Spain and was in jail for six weeks, then the king let him go and pardoned him afterwards

Source that I had to turn in: My second source that I will be using for the Final Research Project is howardzinn.org/columbus-lens-of-history. Although now two of my sources are from Howard Zinn, he is a very respected author in the History field and has many books on Christopher Columbus and he journey two the new land. I choose this source because it covers what Christopher Columbus had to go through when he landed on the new land. It covers what the Indians went through and what they had to do to stay alive. This source contributes to the project by giving me the information on the Indians

Another source that I had to turn in: For my third source, I will be using christopher-columbus.eu/voyage-1.htm. I am using this source because it goes into why Christopher Columbus took his first voyage and how he got back. It does not go into what happened when he got to this new land that he had discovered, but it goes into why and how. I think this source contributes to the Final Report Project because it can be used to see why he wanted to take the voyage in the first place. We all have different views of why he took it. Most believe it was for the money from the new land. Others believe that he wanted to find a new trading route to China.

Paper Rubric:

Complete literature review will be based on the client population that you are serving in your field agency. The literature review will be a comprehensive review of all research done and a summary of the results of that research related to an identified client need. The literature will cover evidence-based processes that have been utilized with the identified client population. The research cited in the literature must come from peer reviewed sources that are reputable. The paper will be 8-10 pages in length (typed Times New Roman 12pt). A reference page is also required and this is not part of the 8-10 page requirement.

The purpose of a literature review is to:

establish a theoretical framework for your topic / subject area
define key terms, definitions and terminology
identify studies, models, case studies etc supporting your topic
define / establish your area of study, ie your research topic.

Main points to address in a literature review:

What does past research say (theory)
How was past research carried out (methodology, limitations, generalizability)
What is missing from past research (gap future research needs to fill)
Suggested approach:

1. Identify a client need related in some way to your field placement. Determine your general research question.

2. Select articles that relate to the topic. You may need to broaden or narrow your search, depending on the number of results. For example, researching “child abuse treatment” will likely yield an unmanageable number and variety of results. Researching “child abuse treatment for homeless adolescents” will likely narrow the results. You may find that searching “homeless adolescents”, “clinical interventions with homeless adolescents”, and “child abuse treatment with adolescents” may be necessary to get the whole picture. If focusing on Memphis/Tennessee specific information, you may want to utilize reports from the Urban Child Institute, TN Department of Health, or other local services to describe your population.

3. Sort through articles to identify the most relevant information. Think about how your research question fits into the larger body of existing research.

4. Examine all aspects of the articles: any gaps in methodology? theoretical assumptions? results? limitations? applicability to chosen population?

5. Organize information. This will look different, depending on the research question. In general, you are starting with a larger body of knowledge, possibly disjointed (maybe you’ll find a lot of information on mental health treatment of homeless teens and a lot of information on child abuse interventions with teens, but little overlap of child abuse interventions with homeless teens), or conflicting studies (two studies find family interventions to be most effective, and three find individual interventions to be best). Look for themes.

6. Make the connection to your research question. How does the body of research inform your research question? If you were going to design a study to follow, what considerations would be necessary, given your new understanding?

7. Focus on critical analysis rather than summarization of the information. What new questions or considerations must be made? How has the existing research impacted current services? Where does the field need to go from here?

As you know, a part of what we do in healthcare is look around our communities to see where there are opportunities for us to learn about what is new/what is happening and what is working for organizations that are actively involved in the health and well-being business within the areas that we live.

So, you have an assignment that is labeled Community Engagement. This is a written reflective paper (no more than 2 pages).
You should physically and or call, or research (Nursing home, hospice, health insurance company, MD office, pharmacy, health tech company – large or small). This is not an internship type of visit, but rather it is an opportunity for you to speak with someone (front desk, billing, clinical, tech, etc. ) and ask them if they have a moment of time so that you may ask them a couple of questions about health care in terms of their role within that organization.

Here’s a basic introduction:
Hi, my name is xyz, I’m a student at Clayton State University and I’m pursuing my degree in Health Care Management. In my communications course, one of our assignments is to speak with someone who is actively working within an aspect of healthcare to find out their perspectives based on the role that he/she is in. Could I speak with you briefly – no more than 5 – 10 mins. Unless you have more time. I would appreciate it.

A few things that you could ask about are:

1. Are you using any new technology within your area (like e health, mhealth or telemedicine services?) Caution:…. YOU need to know what these are…..

2. Do you find that there has been any change to your role based on PPACA? (Caution…. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS?)

3. Is there any advice that you would offer to someone who is interested in this area of health care for them to be successful?

4. How long have they been in healthcare?, etc.

And you may ask any additional questions that are important to you based on the location that you have chosen. Please always confirm that it is ok to restate their names, but let them know that it is not mandatory, particularly if they are sharing negative aspects of the organization in which they are employed. Think of it as a mini informational interview to get to know something about an area that you find interesting. Try not to do this at your present employer. It is typically not as interesting for you, the student.

Once you do this, you should write this experience up to explain what you learned and if it gives you insight for your future in healthcare management from the experience.

ANTHROPOLOGY 2
TERM PAPER – ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH PROJECT
PAPER ASSIGNMENT: CHOOSE ONE TOPIC BELOW

Topic #1 Oral History of an Immigrant

Interview a family member or friend who is an immigrant regarding their experience adapting to life in the United States (the participant must have been old enough to remember emigrating). Prepare by writing open-ended interview questions asking your research participant to tell you about their immigration experiences.

Address the following:

• Why did they move? What was difficult?
• Did they gain/lose anything?
• How have their values changed as a result of their experience? Do they see this as positive or negative?
• Connect their experiences with the FIVE (5) anthropological concepts listed below:

o Marriage/Courtship – How do marriage/courtship practices compare between the U.S. and their home country?
o Work/Education – What kind of jobs did they/their family have in home country? How about educational opportunities? Compare with jobs/education in the U.S.
o Health – What was healthcare like in home country? What did they do if they got sick? Did they have any alternative remedies?
o Language – Is communication difficult for them in the U.S.? Why or why not?
o Race/Racism – What is their experience with racism in home country or U.S.? (If no personal experience, ask about the subject generally).
Use key terms like PUSHES AND PULLS, Bridges and barriers, CHAIN MIGRATION, HOMETOWN ASSOC., LABOR IMMIGRANT, AND OR SOCIAL CAPITAL
Write their immigration story as an anthropologist; be as detailed as possible. TIP: Refer to Chapter 13 in our textbook for some important ideas and terms related to this topic.

Overview

In this individual assignment, I will provide you with a selection of mock scenarios for organizations at different levels of analytical maturity. You will select one organization scenario and put together a 3-4 page response on how you would build out an effective team to meet the business plan needs.

Steps
You should take the following steps to complete this assignment:

Step 1: Review the material.

Revisit the readings from modules 7-9, and the discussions we have had in class and online. Pay particular attention to how different organizational designs require unique team composition.

Step 2: Select an organization profile.

Choose one of the following organization scenarios to focus your paper on.

Option 1: I have a project that needs to create a proof of concept for analyzing the advertising segments to be addressed and used for a proposed new product. This is a test for now, not a production system. We need it completed in a few weeks and tested against some existing marketing data. A competitor may emerge soon. What resources do I need?

Option 2: My company is addressing some technology and business changes that will force me to sell things through the internet. How do I establish an analytics team to test this idea, and then implement it as a production system?

Option 3: My manufacturing systems are being upgraded to use new suppliers of raw materials. I need to be able to test such systems in real time using internet of things methods, to be able to change process settings. How do I establish an analytics team to test these systems?

Option 4: I need to be able to interact with people online who might act as testers of my products, so I need to analyze tweet data in real time to determine if they are likely users and then try to engage them online. What resources do I need to effectively analyze the data and engage users online?

Option 5: I am not doing any analytics today, just completing some spreadsheets. Should I build an internal team or buy services? Who should I assemble to determine whether an internal team can handle this task or outside services need to be purchased? What measures should I use?

Step 3: Develop and author a business plan.

Consider your options for building an effective analytics team to meet the needs of the organization. Build a plan that includes the following elements:

• An analysis of the problem and its relationship to the organizational context. Describe the organizational setting, including its currently analytical capabilities and the specific needs you are trying to address in the development of an analytical team.
• A summary of the gaps in the existing resources and what capabilities are needed to address the organizational problem.
• A discussion of the structure of your team. Articulate what role each team member would play and how you would structure these resources. Be sure that you include an explanation of why you have structured the team as you have.
• A summary of the benefits for building analytical capacity. Remember the importance of communicating about analytics to non-technical professionals. How will you defend the resources used to create this team and build our organization’s analytical efforts.

Assessment

In assessing this assignment, I am looking for evidence of the following:

You were able to communicate principles and effective implementation strategies for building and maintaining an analytics team
You were able to assess an organization’s analytical maturity and design appropriate analytics strategy to meet organizational needs
You were able to synthesize and apply the reading material, present concepts clearly in a written format, and create a coherent, well-supported plan to build out an effective team

Subject: Somali Deaf Requesting

Somali National Association of the Deaf (SONAD) is the national association of Deaf people within and without Somalia. SONAD was formed in Somalia in 2006 in Mogadishu, Somalia. As you have discovered through this course, nurses are influential members of the community and the political system. Therefore, for the purposes of this assignment you will identify a problem or concern in your community, organization, etc. that has the capacity to be legislated. You will conduct research and state a proposal. Through the legislative process, your proposal for the problem or concern may influence an idea for change into a law.

First, refer to the “How a Bill Becomes a Law” media.

http://lc.gcumedia.com/zwebassets/courseMaterialPages/nrs440v_how-a-bill-becomes-a-law-v2.1.php

Then, view the “Bill to Law Process” to watch the scenario.

After viewing the scenario, refer to the “Legislative Assignment.” You will need to save the document first in order to use it.

Submit the assignment to the instructor. You also reserve the right to submit your completed proposal to the respective government official. However, this is optional. If you select to submit your proposal as a part of the legislative process, refer to “Find Your Representative” or research the contact information on your own.

Antitrust authorities at the Federal Trade Commission are reviewing your company’s recent merger with a rival firm. The FTC is concerned that the merger of two rival firms in the same market will increase market power. A hearing is scheduled for your company to present arguments that your firm has not increased its market power through this merger. Can you do this? How? What evidence might you bring to the hearing?
Assume that the demand for plastic surgery is price inelastic. Are the following statements true or false? Explain your answer for full credit.
When the price of plastic surgery increases, the number of operations decreases.
The percentage change in the price of plastic surgery is less than the percentage change in quantity demanded.
Changes in the price of plastic surgery do not affect the number of operations.
Quantity demanded is quite responsive to changes in price.
The marginal revenue of another operation is negative.
The Theory of the Firm document, the Friedman article, and the information in chapter 4 argue that the main goal of a firm in a market economy is to maximize profit (shareholder wealth) over the long term. However, SEC regulations require U.S. corporations to publish operating results on a quarterly basis. How does this short term time frame impact long term profit maximization? Should the SEC change their regulations of public corporations to require only annual reporting of operations? How might this impact stock price in the short term? How do you believe that management deals with these two sometimes competing goals?
During the energy crisis of the 1970s, and again in the last 5 years, Congress bemoaned the “price gouging” and “windfall” profits of the major oil companies. In the 1970s Congress imposed an “excess profits tax” on these companies. It did not do so this time? What does this change show about how our understanding of the way the price system works to allocate resources has evolved? If “excess profits” are taxed away, where will oil companies get the money to fund new exploration and development of oil properties? Does it matter if these price increases are demand or supply induced

Refer to the scenario from Assignment 1.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

Evaluate two to four (2-4) weaknesses that are evident in the selected organization’s product life cycle. Generate a new product design and product selection, and then determine three (3) strategies that the organization needs in order to strengthen the operation. Provide support for the rationale.
Determine the key components of supply chain management for the company you have selected. Determine three (3) major issues that could affect the structuring, sourcing, purchasing, and the supply chain of your organization. Provide a solution to each issue.
Develop a total quality management tool that identifies and analyzes any future issues. Provide a rationale for developing the selected tool.
Analyze three (3) advantages in employing the just-in-time philosophy in your organization. Evaluate three to five (3-5) means in which the philosophy could potentially impact quality assurance. Provide specific examples to support your response.
Determine a qualitative and quantitative forecasting method for your operation. Next, create a table in which you identify the characteristics of the operation that relate to each method. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each method.
Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
