FIELDWORK SITE: CAMPUS (IN FRONT OF THE LIBRARY)
I picked the campus environment as it harbors a lot of youth who are sensitive to fashion and are keen on what they wear. Fall is also a season considered peak for fashion trends.
1)     What people wear and how they wear it.
Most males were dressed casually while females exhibited more trendiness and diversity. Denim with t-shirts, jackets, polo shirts, cable-knit and hoodie sweaters were common among males. T-shirts ranged from plain to graphic tees. Some males wore sweatshirts with university name.
Military style was also observed in both male and females. This includes wearing military inspired clothes mainly hunter green to gold colors.
Accessories included simple silver watches, oversized watches, chains, hats, scarves, trendy belts and sunglasses for both males and females.
Layering was dominant among both males and females.
Males with a taste for fashion were observed to have a signature look, with streamlined silhouettes as opposed to baggy dressing.
Females dressed more colorfully than males. They adopted more accessories and make-up as compared to males. Some adopted menswear-inspired looks.  Such wore blazers, tweed, sweater vests and cropped trousers. These were worn with loafers.
Hippie dressing saw girls wear halter tops, patched skirts, colorful tees, micro- minis with chains, tie and dye garments, leather sandals among others.
Generally, the bottoms worn by girls included: skinny jeans, leggings, Bermuda shorts, slouchy boyfriend jeans, denim shorts, corduroy skirts and short summer dresses. Tops included: floral tanks which were bustier-inspired, military jackets, pullovers and cable-knits. Some wore mini-skirts with boyish loafers to appear masculine.
Since most university students are keen on their looks, none was spotted with old or torn clothes. Most of them appeared presentable. Most dressings portrayed a degree of decency except a few, who sagged trousers or who were overly exposed.
2)     How much of what people wear serves as function and how much is purely for style
Most of what was observed was dressing purely for style. In a university setting, there are no much restrictions as in the work place, church or events. Most students also compete with others on the way they dress. It is more of a fashion show, especially with the females. However, layering was observed to serve a function of counteracting cold weather.
3)     What types of shoes are people wearing
Shoes observed included:  ballet flats, sneakers, high-heels, wedges, flip flops, boat shoes, riding boots, sperry top spiders, jack Rodgers, hunter wellington and loafers.
4)     What cultural meanings and signals do brands observed convey
My study subjects were youthful students, so most of them were dressed for style. Their brands signified the impact of current modernization. This is grounded in their tastes of music, celebrity styles and their idols. Most youth try to ape what the modern society has socialized them. I could observe top-celebrities’ looks among the students.
5)     What do you detect about individuals based on their clothing/shoe choices
What a person wears tells a lot about their personality. This depends on the colors and styles they choose to wear.
The level of exposure is also brought out. If someone is informed and exposed fashion-wise, it will come out in the way they dress.
A person’s economic status shows in the type of clothes they wear. Cheap clothes can be differentiated from expensive ones.
An individual’s religiosity also comes out. If one wears religious apparels for example, Muslims, their religion comes out clearly.
6)     Interesting trends observed
The most interesting trends were those that portrayed an aspect of ‘gender-switching’. This is where boys try to integrate a degree of ‘femininity’ and girls adopt some level of ‘masculinity’ in their dressings.

Q2The Outdoor Furniture Corporation manufacturing two products, benches and picnic tables, for use in yards and parks. The firm has two main resources: its carpenters (labor force) and a supply of redwood for use in the furniture. During the next production cycle, 1,200 hours of labor are available under a union agreement. The firm also has a stock of 3500 feet of good-quality redwood. Each bench that Outdoor Furniture produces requires 4 labor hours and 10 feet of redwood; each picnic table takes 6 labor hours and 35 feet of redwood. Completed benches will yield a profit of $9 each, and tables will result in a profit of $20 each. How many benches and tables should Outdoor Furniture produce to obtain the largest possible profit?
Q3 MSA Computer Corporation manufactures two models of minicomputers, the Alpha 4 and the Beta 5. The firm employs five technicians, working 160 hours each per month, on its assembly line. Management insists that full employment (i.e., all 160 hours of time) be maintained for each worker during next month’s operations. It requires 20 labor hours to assemble each Alpha 4computer and 25 labor hours to assemble each Beta 5 model. MSA wants to see at least 10 Alpha4s and at least 15 Beta 5s produced during the production period. Alpha 4s generate $1,200 profit per unit, and Beta 5s yield $1,800 each. Determine the most profitable number of each model of minicomputer to produce during the coming month?

Australia is experiencing an ‘epidemic’ of methamphetamine use

Task A (About 550 words)
Please refer to the table below. You are going to investigate three perceptions regarding
methamphetamines by answering the questions in column 1. To answer the questions you will need
to use the corresponding data sources (Reliable Health Data) provided in Column 2. You must back
up all of your answers with the relevant data (briefly) and reference the source(s) of the data
appropriately.
Questions to be answered based on evidence
Reliable health data
(government reports

Perception: ‘Australia is experiencing an ‘epidemic’ of
methamphetamine use.’
Use Table 2.2 on page 9 of the report opposite to answer the
following questions:
1. What percentage of the Australian population aged 14 years
and older had ever used methamphetamines in 2010?
2. How does the level of meth/amphetamine use compare
with levels of use of other illicit drugs?
3. (a) Has the level of ‘ever use’ of meth/amphetamines
increased between 2007 and 2010 (the most recent data
available)?
(b) What does the longer term trend (i.e. from 2001 to
2010) indicate?
4. Based on your answers to the above questions, do the data
indicate that “Australia is experiencing an epidemic of
methamphetamine use”? (Briefly explain your answer)

Task B (About 50 words)
Health research employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection and
analysis. As you learnt in Topic 1, the type of study design and data collection methods used
depends on the specific research question you are attempting to answer. Certain research questions
(such as most of the questions in the table above) can only be answered using quantitative research
designs and methods; while other research questions require the use of qualitative research designs
and methods.
10 (a) Develop ONE research question related to the use of methamphetamines in Victoria. Your
question must be a reasonably feasible research question which requires QUANTITATIVE methods to
be answered.
10 (b) Develop ONE research question related to the use of methamphetamines in Victoria. Your
question must be a reasonably feasible research question which requires QUALITATIVE methods to
be answered.
Task C: (About 200 words)
In Topic 1 you learnt about the ethical requirements of conducting health research, and the key
principles underpinning ethical health research. Illicit drug use is considered a sensitive research
topic, in part because the researcher may be investigating illegal behaviour.
This task requires you to use the Deakin University library to conduct an online search for peerreviewed
journal articles or reports (from reputable organisations) that focus specifically on the
ethical issues associated with conducting research into illicit drug use.
11. Specify the database(s) and search terms that you used to locate appropriate articles or reports.
12. Select the most relevant article you obtained in your search. Provide the full reference and
abstract of this article as an appendix in your assignment. (Note: the abstract is not included in the
word count for the assignment).
13. Select one of the research questions you developed for task B. Imagine you are a researcher
attempting to collect data in order to answer the specified research question. Three key ethical
principles are (a) respecting autonomy, (b) confidentiality and anonymity, and (c) protection from
discomfort and harm. Briefly describe an example of an ethical issue in each of these three areas
that would need to be considered when attempting to carry out the research

Encephalitis in Texas
Case Study:
Please Complete in APA format
On May 30, a 22-year-old man complained of right hand weakness.
On June 1, he complained of right arm numbness.
On June 2, he exhibited several episodes of staring and unresponsiveness lasting 10 to 15 seconds.
He consulted a physician in Mexico, who prescribed an unknown medication. That evening, he presented himself to a hospital emergency room in Texas complaining of right hand pain. He had been punctured by a catfish fin earlier in the week, so, based on this information, he was treated with ceftriaxone and tetanus toxoid.
…….
….
On June 3, when he returned to the emergency room complaining of spasms, he was hyperventilating and had a white blood cell (WBC) count of 11,100 per mm3. Although he was discharged after reporting some improvement, he began to have intermittent episodes of rigidity, breath holding, hallucinations, and difficulty swallowing. Eventually he refused liquids. That evening, he was admitted to the intensive-care unit of another hospital in Texas with a preliminary diagnosis of either encephalitis or tetanus. Manifestations included frequent spasms of the face, mouth, and neck; stuttering speech; hyperventilation; and a temperature of 37.8°C. His WBC count was 17,100 mm3 with granulocytosis. He was sedated and observed.
…….
….
On the morning of June 4, the patient was confused, disoriented, and areflexic (without reflexes). Although his neck was supple, muscle tonus was increased in his upper extremities. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid indicated slightly elevated protein, slightly elevated glucose, and 1 WBC per 0.1 ml. An electroencephalogram showed abnormal activity. Because he had uncontrolled oral secretions, he was intubated. His temperature rose to 41.7°C, and he was sweating profusely.
On June 5, the man died.
The patient had worked as a phlebotomist for a blood bank and had donated blood on May 22. His platelets had been transfused before he became ill, but the remainder of his blood products were destroyed.
* Case Studies are intended for use as class assignments. If you are a student, you may email your answers to your instructor using the form below. Answers to case studies are available to instructors in the Instructor’s Manual accompanying Microbiology: An Introduction, 9th edition.
Explain this questions while completing the case study
1) What was the purpose of the ceftriaxone? The tetanus toxoid?
2) What is the most likely cause of the man’s illness and death?
3) Explain what is granulocytosis?
4) How could he have being treated?
5) what information do you need to be sure?
6) How should the platelet recipient be treated?

Socrates got into trouble with the elders of Athens because it was thought that Socrates didn’t believe in the gods worshiped and adored by most Greeks.

…….

He was also

accused of corrupting the youth who listened to him in the Academy. Professor Kreeft’s view is that Socrates was more religious and more spiritually-minded than his

accusers could ever have imagined. Socrates was a lover of wisdom, and he devoted his life to that cause. Without ever writing anything down for us to examine, his

listeners and students give us a glimpse into what it was like to be around Socrates. And in some ways, we still revere him by mimicking his questioning methods. To

make the point, we need only sit in a courtroom or a college classroom. Attorneys in the modern,

…….

American legal system and many college professors use the Socratic

Method as a tool to teach or to draw information out. Socrates would slowly strip away what was useless to eventually find out what was useful or the truth. He did

this by asking questions and then answering student questions with another question. Finding truth, as in finding wisdom, was and is a journey, not necessarily a

destination in and of itself. Socrates, like modern attorneys and professor, wanted to excite learning within the minds of those they influenced. In the courtroom,

…….

the

attorney tries to excite the truth from witnesses and the jury. Aristotle provides us with another dichotomy. And these elements of an argument are still practiced

today. The Greeks called a dispute about facts a dialectic. If there was no clearly discerned truth, adversaries would try their hardest to argue logically. The burden

of truth was dependent on the winner of the argument, but even the winner could be draw into an argument with someone else and could lose.

…….

Some arguments were always

dialectical. However, when the facts were incontrovertible, when it was clear what outcome was obvious, that form of argument was apodictic. The facts were

incontestable and logically certain. We see from these two forms of argument two important legal terms still in effect today: substantive law and procedural law.

…….

Substantive law is like the arguable dialectical form explained by Aristotle. Procedural law is mechanical and is largely apodictic, where truth is easily determined

by the statute. We will find later that procedural law and administrative law are very similar, as we look at modern rules for the administrative law process. Gesell

…….

and Lawrence, in Aviation and the Law, make the following observation of the nature of law as seen through the eyes of Thomas Hobbes. Arguably, the nature of human

beings is sociability and rationality. To bring up the nature of law is to resume arguments posited by the ancient Greek philosophers Socrates and Plato, but

especially Aristotle. The arguments are disputes about the nature of law and morality, and about the relationship of the two. Morality in this case meaning ‘virtue,’

…….

with virtue generally being interpreted as ‘mastery.’ The opposite, immoral, does not necessarily mean sinful, as in the breaking of God’s laws. But it does imply a

violation of the norms of society

Aristotle focused on three kinds of justice: (1) distributive justice; (2) corrective justice; and (3) justice in exchange. Distributive justice describes a legal

environment where there is equality between and among equals. There is equal allocation among equals. After the American War of Independence, the federalists in

government practiced this type of justice;

…….

but it was not afforded to those “unequal:” a matter discussed in the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers. To see an

example of inequality, visit the history of the Bill of Rights and those Constitutional amendments that followed. For example, why did it take so long to extend

equality to women? When the slaves were freed at the close of the American Civil War, it still took some time before they too were declared “equal.”

…….

Corrective justice

is a concept much older than Aristotle, but a concept very much part of our modern legal system. It is equality between punishment and crime. To be fair, any citizen

who violated a statute should expect to receive the same punishment for the same crime. We know that this is not always followed in our American legal system. Some

persons seem to be exempt from punishment for crimes they commit, because of their status.
