The following five quotations are all taken from readings in the Andrea/Overfield book, or from burmese days. All of the selections were assigned during the second half of the semester. In each case, explain what you think the author(or character, in the case of Burmese days)is saying, and discuss why the ideas found in the quotation might be historically important or interesting. Your answer should consist of a least one paragraph (of several sentences), and for some quotes, you might want it to be longer.

Emperor Qianlong “…our Celestiral empire possesses all things in prolific abundance and lacks no product within its own borders. There are therefore no need to import the manufactures of outside barbarians in exchange for our own produce. But as the tea, silk, and porcelain which the celestial Empire produces are absolute necessities to European nations and to yourselves, we have permitted, as a signal mark of favor, that hongs should be established at Guangzhou, so that your wants might be supplied and your country thus participate in our beneficence.

Honda Toshiaki: “there is no place in the world to compare with Europe. It may be wondered in what way this supremacy was achieved. In the first place, the European nations have behind them a history of five to six thousand years. In this period they have delved deep into the beauties of the arts, have divined the foundations of government, and have established a system based on a thorough examination of the factors that naturally make a nation prosperous…in spite of this example, however, the Japanese do not look elsewhere than to China for good or beautiful things…”

Heinrich von Treitschke: “the idea of perpetual peace is an illusion supported only by those of weak character. It has always been the weary, spiritless, and exhausted ages which have played with the dream of perpetual peace. A thousand touching portraits testify to the sacred power of the love which a righteous war awakes in noble nations. It is altogether impossible that peace be maintained in a world bristling with arms, and even god will see to it that war always recurs as a drastic medicine for the human race.”

…….

Dr. Veraswam (from Burmese days): “my friend, it is pathetic to me to hear you talk so. It is truly pathetic. You say you are here to trade? Of course you are. Could the Burmese trade for themselves? Can they make machinery, ships, railways, roads? They are helpless without you. What would happen to the Burmese forest if the English were not here? They would be sold immediately to the Japanese, who would gut them and ruin them. Instead of which, in your hands, actually they are improved. And while your business men develop the resources of our country, your officials are civilizing us, elevating us to their level, from pure public spirit. It is a magnificent record of self-sacrifice.

Flory: “why, of course, the lie that we’re here to uplift our poor black brothers instead of to rob them. I supposed it’s a natural lie enough. But it corrupts us, it corrupts us in ways you can’t imagine there’s an everlasting sense of being a sneak and a liar that torments us and drives us to justify ourselves night and day. It’s at the bottom of half our beastliness to the natives. We Anglo-Indians could be almost bearable if we’d only admit that we’re thieves and go on thieving without any humbug.”

Psychology
Prepare a 2 page paper in which you examine the foundations of psychology.
Address the following components:

•    Identify the major schools of thought in psychology and examine their major underlying
assumptions.
Introduction

Psychology is a vast field with a long past. Early psychologists developed different schools of thought in accordance with their research. All this was in a bid to explain human behavior and understanding the mind. Although all of them have been disputed for one reason or the other, they are still accepted as approaches in the study of human behavior.
Structuralism was the first school of thought in psychology and was advanced by Wundt together with his student, Edward B. Tichenet. It involved the study of the structure of the mind. The mind is abstract and dynamic and so the different parts that make up consciousness should be identified and studied scientifically through ‘introspection’.  This involves trying to understand individuals’ internal experiences.  Different subjects were exposed to a variety of stimuli and described what they experienced. Their responses would be analyzed to come up with the primary components of the mind. Structuralism is unique as it employed scientific methods in psychology. However, structuralists were criticized for employing introspection as a method as different people have different perceptions of the same thing.
Psychoanalysis is another school of thought that was advanced by Sigmund Freud. He believed that in studying behavior, not only the conscious mind is studied. He therefore incorporated the unconscious mind in behavior study. The unconscious mind is responsible for many factors that influence human behavior. Freud was the pioneer of vital theories of personality. He explained how the conscious and subconscious minds work and how personality development happens in individuals. Many therapists today employ psychotherapy which was developed by Freud. However, Freud’s theory is mainly criticized for its failure to be tested scientifically. Burger (2011) observes that Freud only dwelt on the significance of childhood experiences, forgetting that experiences after childhood also play a role in childhood development.
Functionalism was propagated by William James. He argued that consciousness and the mind were not static, but ongoing and therefore it is impossible to study their structure. He proposed that the function of the mind should instead be studied. How the mind operates and how it enables adaptation in a radical world are of essence. According to Hergenhahn, 2009, functionalism incorporated study of children, animals and mental disorderliness into psychology. They were also broad in their study as they applied psychology to real-world issues. In addition to introspection, they used mental tests and psychological measures (Schultz & Schultz, 2011). They were however criticized for using introspection and a misguided meaning of ‘function’
Behaviorism was advanced by John B. Watson who argued that covert behavior could not be studied scientifically. He emphasized observable behavior rather than mental processes. The relationship between the environment and an individual’s response are key to understanding human behavior. However, later cognitive behaviorists embraced the study of both observable and non-observable behavior. A major criticism of this thought was that there are many more aspects of human experience (for example, thinking and creativity) outside of observable behavior (Walters, 2002, p.29). These must also be studied.
Gestalt psychology was embraced by Max Wertheimer and other propagators who argued that human behavior should be studied as a whole and not in segments. They believed that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. Therefore, by breaking down human behavior, meaning is lost. They studied cognition, thinking, problem-solving and perception as whole.
Humanistic psychology was advanced by Carl Rodgers who was against the determinism portrayed in psychoanalysis and behaviorism. Humanists argued that individuals have free will to control their own lives and so cannot be controlled by external forces. This thought focused on the positive side of humans as opposed to psychoanalysis which dwelt on the negative.
All these schools of thought are linked by biological psychology which bridges the gap between biological and psychological processes. ‘Biopsychology’ unites the body and mind as it studies the role of the brain, nerves and neurotransmitters in human behavior. Normal and abnormal behavior are influenced by brain circuitry. The primary biological foundations that shape behavior have been identified as; motivated behavior, perception and sensation, learning, memory, sleep, emotion and other biological rhythms.  The link between basic psychology and biological psychology is employed in treating mental disorders and other medical conditions today.
In conclusion, no school of thought is regarded as winner or loser in psychology as they all contributed to founding psychology. Most modern psychologists still make reference to these schools of thought, even as more psychological theories continue to be developed.

  • Identify the state and federal courts covering your state. Determine the Federal District Court to which your state belongs. Remember that a few states will come under the jurisdiction of one Federal District Court.
  • Determine the different levels of the state courts in your state starting with the most basic court and make a list of these that pertain to your state.
  • Do not include specialty or limited courts like tax courts, bankruptcy, or agency claims.

Prepare a 3–4 page paper that is composed of three sections. The first section should discuss the federal court structure in your district and state. In the second section, you will identify the court that has jurisdiction in the cases below and explain why. Finally, spend a paragraph reflecting on what you have learned about the court system and the impact of its structure on the justice system.

 http://retiredlecturers.com

  1. Describe the structure of the courts and the jurisdiction, particularly what types of matters that each type of court can handle. Pay particular attention to Article III of the Constitution.
  2. Which court has jurisdiction in the following cases?
    • You are renting an apartment. Your landlord has falsely claimed that you have given notice that you would not renew your lease and is pursuing eviction charges against you. The amount in controversy is $2,000 in rent, including your security deposit.
    • The federal government just brought a case against a group of human traffickers who are accused of smuggling young women from Eastern Europe into the country for prostitution. The women are brought to large cities in different states, where prostitution rings are set up. The traffickers communicate with each other using the telephone system.
  3. At the end of the paper, save some space to discuss your views (and any research you may have conducted) as to the effectiveness of a dual and sometimes parallel court structure.

You should also make sure to:

  • Include a title page with full name, class name, section number, and date
  • Include an introductory and concluding paragraph and demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English
  • Use examples to support your Discussion
  • Cite all sources on a separate reference page at the end of your paper and cited within the body of your paper using APA format

The effect of EDPA and FDPA on students’ final examination results
submit an article to this online journal: http://mojet.net/

Thus, the article must conform to guidelines by mojet.net.

I did an experiment to find out which of the two types of drill and practice applications that I developed (EDPA and FDPA) helped university students achieve better final examination results.

Hypothesis: Something about EDPA is better than FDPA

EDPA stands for editable drill and practice application, while FDPA is fixed drill and practice application. Both applications are offline types, built for Windows based computers and can even run from a pen drive. The main difference between the two is EDPA had no pre-inserted items but requires students to enter their own questions and answers while FDPA had pre-inserted items but no item editing features.

The experiment involved 151 students from 2 classes of the Cognitive Sciences and Ethics course in Universiti Utara Malaysia for the duration of 1 semester (September 2013 to December 2013). The course was chosen because it usually comprise of students from different programs and semesters and taught by the same lecturer. The lecturer of the course agreed to try out the applications.

The first class with 75 students was given EDPA. Second class with 76 students was given FDPA.

Students were asked to use the applications as an assignment. Each student must perform drills using the given application at least 2 times a week for each topic covered in class. They will need to print a weekly report that can be generated from the application that can prove they used the application as requested. Failure in submitting the weekly report or using the application less than 2 times a week will result in a deduction of course marks. EDPA students must ensure that most of the important facts in each topic were covered in their items.

Finally, the final examination results consisting of 100 MCQ items for both groups were compared.

In short, besides the article using info above I would like you to:
-Come up with a topic for the article
-Use the experiment data given to report results, discussions and conclusion
-Use the screenshots given
-From the 15 sources (books or journal articles only), need at least 3 similar/related study from anywhere since 2012 -2014

The three major human resources management responsibilities are: attracting a quality workforce, developing a quality workforce, and maintaining a quality workforce. Research an organization with which you are familiar that is in need of a change.

http://retiredlecturers.com

Based on the organization you have selected and the major human resources management responsibilities, create a PowerPoint presentation of 12-15 slides (including title and reference slides) in which you address the following questions:

  1. What organization have you selected and what needs to be changed?
  2. Why does this change need to occur? What may be the consequences if this change does not occur?
  3. How should this organization attractdevelop, and maintain the workforce required to bring about your proposed change?

Discuss at least one of the following about attracting a quality workforce to support the change: human resource planning, recruitment, or selection.

Discuss at least one of the following about how to develop a quality workforce to support the change: employee orientation, training and development, or performance appraisal.

Discuss at least one of the following about how to maintain a quality workforce to support the change: career development, work-life balance, compensation and benefits, employee retention and turnover, or labor-management relations.

The presentation should also integrate appropriate connections to the broader course materials and a faith/worldview-based component. Clearly demonstrate how that worldview informs the group’s management practice.

Include at least four academic references for this assignment to support your position. One of them should relate to the company discussed in your paper.

Include slide notes with your presentation.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment will be graded using the “Human Resources and Change PowerPoint Presentation Rubric.” Instructors will be using the rubric to grade the assignment; therefore, students should review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations for successful completion of the assignment.

You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin, unless otherwise directed by your instructor. If so directed, refer to the Student Success Center for directions. Only Word documents can be submitted to Turnitin.

Nobody ever wants to think of retirement. First and for most, to some people, retirement means goodbye to ones earnings. This takes a huge toll especially on those who consider themselves to be earning well. For others, it is a huge loss as it marks an end to their passion; what they love to do that they would be willing to do it for no pay.  What really does retirement mean? In some cases, people retire out of their own volition. No coercion is needed to get them out of ‘power’. They look at it as a time to take a break and enjoy the fruit of their labor. Nevertheless, some people are ‘forced into retirement. This is known as mandatory retirement. Mandatory retirement is a provision given by the law or industrial custom for specific job descriptions. One then asks, “Why is such a provision given for specific job types and for what reasons?”

Mandatory retirement is prescribed in occupations that are deemed to be dangerous or demand high cognitive and physical skill. These include firefighters, military personnel, air traffic controllers and airline pilots. Different countries prescribe different ages of retirement but generally, it lies between 60 to 70. The main reason given for this legislation is that it is look out for the safety of the public. In the event, that a 67 year old pilot failed to man the airship as expected, the lives of many would be in jeopardy. If the 70 year old fireman was slow in running up the stairs to save a baby’s life, the baby would die not because they could not be saved. It would simply be because the firefighter was too old to act swiftly. Thus, in the long run, there is need to consider other people’s safety.

In addition to that, those subjected to mandatory retirement enjoy good retirement benefits. The incentives are packaged in a way that tries to ensure one doesn’t feel the pinch of having lost their job. In some cases, they only cease to go to the field but may be retained as advisory support. This shows that the organizations they work for acknowledge them as investments and would hate to lose them. According to the National Business Aviation Association (2011), a pilot who has reached sixty years is not allowed to act as pilot in command of an aircraft. Clearly, it does not mean that they lose their jobs but rather they co-pilot.

http://retiredlecturers.com

Furthermore, it is argued that mandatory retirement is beneficial to the younger employees who also seek to rise in ranks. The only way they can do this is if the older generation paves the way for them by retiring. This is illustrated by Jang (2011) who narrates the story of Mr.Ennis, a pilot who is about to retire as per the provisions of the Air Canada airlines but does not want to. His move to retain his job is objected to by a younger colleague, Capt. Cory Brown aged 33. To him, extending Ennis’s tenure is punishing the younger pilots.  He argues that the younger pilots also need to earn the big bucks.

Sad to say, this is not how another category views the situation. On the contrary, they see it as discrimination or ageism.  Those that are directly affected argue that mandatory retirement has no basis. As argued out by Gokhale, mortality rates of the aged has greatly reduced over the years, thus employees in their sixties are in good shape to run their jobs (2004). He goes to say that these categories of workers dedicate their time to serving such that their occupation does not allow them the room for transfer of skills. Hence, if they are to retire, then they cannot get alternative employment. This leaves them in an awkward position.

To add on to that, when these people lack employment, the burden of supporting them is left on their children. This may put a strain on the relationship as the parents also would feel like a burden to their children. Sometimes, the children are forced to put these parents in foster care homes. In these homes, the parents would feel incapacitated as they can no longer do anything except sit around the whole day. In case of Mr. Ennis, he feels the need to continue providing for his wife. Thus, he has opted to work for a lesser pay so long as he is still putting food on the table.

Another interesting scenario presented by CBC News Canada, highlights that very few people nowadays work for an organization up to the time they are 60 or 65 years (2010). Many employees nowadays hop from one institution to another. Hence, to send the 65 year old employee packing would be deemed humane. Having invested the best time of their lives to an organization, the last thing the organization should do is force the employee to retire.

In conclusion, retirement is an issue that needs to be treated with a lot of sensitivity. There are those that don’t mind retiring at the stipulated age whereas there are others who still feel they have something to offer. Thus, every situation needs to be handled individually rather than generalize the mandatory retirement rule.

In Module 3 we are introduced to the concept of welfare economics, where we learn to judge economic outcomes by their impact on efficiency. We are taught that under the condition of perfect competition, with many buyers and sellers free to use their resources as they best see fit,

…….

society’s economic welfare will be maximized. Another way to say this is that unfettered competitive markets produce outcomes that are Pareto optimal. According to this Pareto optimal concept, If there is some way to reallocate resources to make at least one person in this market better off without hurting others, then the said outcome is not efficient.

…….

It is only efficient when we have exhausted every resource to its fullest potential (most valued use) in such a way that the only way to make someone better off is to make someone else worse off.

In his writings Adam Smith suggested that markets do much more than simply allocate resources efficiently.

…….

According to Smith, markets provide the structure so that self-interested behavior creates a just and moral society. Marx felt differently about markets, suggesting that markets cause divisions in society and that capitalism itself would create the seeds of its own destruction. Still others believe that a society first much be morally grounded and practice trust, reciprocity, and relationship before markets can thrive. It seems that the link between markets and morality,

…….

or between markets the welfare, is much more complex than orthodox economics suggests.

For this essay, I’d like you to critically consider the links between markets, efficiency, morality and equality. What are the conditions under which markets maximize social wellbeing? What metrics can/should we use to measure social well-being? Under what conditions do interventions and/or limits on markets increase society’s welfare?

…….

When would it make sense to rely on markets to allocate resources efficiently and then deal with the equity issues separately? When does it make sense to shape the market in a way to produce more equitable outcomes? What do we gain/lose by focusing on efficiency and optimal allocation? What do we gain/lose by focusing on equity? Are markets generally good, bad, or are they inert?

…….
