?    The focus of this paper is on laws related to mental health

Mental health issues often interact with legal policies.  This is especially true when considering competency to stand trial; prosecution limitations due to insanity;

and the right to commit someone with mental health issues to treatment facilities.  This assignment asks you to think critically about issues related to relevant legal

doctrines by addressing issues presented in two movies:  Nuts and Primal Fear. In reviewing these films you are also asked to carry concepts from the last unit about

treatment over into this analysis by evaluating the effectiveness/efficacy of the “treatments” or psychological interventions demonstrated in each case.

Criteria    1-3 points    4-7 points    8-10 points *
Introduction of characters    Main characters (Stampler & Draper) are briefly introduced.    Good elaboration of plot as it relates to the primary characters-

Stampler and Draper.    Elaboration of Stampler and Draper with clear discussion of characters as their case unfolds in the movie.  A significant quote from each

during the movie that illustrates the primary issue for each.
Similarities/differences of cases    Basic statement of fact that both involved with the courts.    Presentation of case being tried with notation of how the cases

are similar and different.    Presentation of similarities in cases being tried and apparent similarities in case history of both Draper and Stampler.

clear reference to how they apply to the cases presented.
Application of laws to cases presented in the movies    Simple statement saying they apply again with list of laws.    Application of laws correctly explained but

different aspects of the law not considered.    Application of the laws correctly applied with awareness that discussion needs to move beyond murder trial.  Issues are

not only about guilty of murder when both movies are considered.

APA including title page, abstract, running head, reference section, and referencing correctly within the body of the paper.
TOTAL POINTS            100
•    * Previous assignments included peer-reviewed studies on both murder and efficacy of treatment.  You should be able to use these in this paper.  This is not

required. You can, however, find new studies as well.
•    Topic headings in the paper can be helpful.  You can use these to present materials in your paper if you like.
•    Paper length: There is no required paper length for this assignment.  An estimate is about 15 pages.  The paper is not graded on length.  It will be graded on

the quality of what is presented.
•    Recall the focus of this paper is the chapter on laws related to mental health.  The paper must clearly address these concepts at a minimum to receive a

passing grade.

The issue of right and wrong has always been open to debate and scrutiny. In people’s private lives, it is open to interpretation and is quite subjective. However, in the business world, there is not that individual definition of right and wrong, at least there should not be. Reflect back on your professional life and recall any time you can identify when, in your own opinion, your organization may have done something unethical. Please do not state or specify the name of the business, just the incident. Then, support your opinion with some research to substantiate your assertions.

  • Search the library and the Internet for information pertaining to the ethical violation made by your organization, past or present, and be sure notto identify the organization. See if this incident has occurred in other organizations; give 2 examples and their outcomes.
  • Can you think of any legitimate justification for the organization’s actions with 2 examples? Explain.

Assignment 1A 850 to 1000 words)

You have worked at this organization for over 10 years and feel totally unappreciated. You have not received a promotion or pay raise in over 5 years, and you work long days and typically take work home with you to stay caught up. Your supervisor—who you despise because of the way he treats you and because he does not authorize any promotion or raise, whereas other departments do—climbs the staircase in front of your cubicle every day to get to his office. This particular supervisor has been with the organization for over 30 years and can essentially retire at any time, but he chooses to continue to work. You happen to notice that a portion of the staircase is rotting out and you are fearful of stepping on it yourself. You don’t particularly like your supervisor, so you don’t report it to your maintenance manager.

http://retiredlecturers.com

Last Monday, your supervisor fell down the flight of stairs and did substantial damage to his back, necessitating his retirement. You found out that you are being promoted to his position. Your promotion will provide you with a handsome pay increase and allow you to get your family to live in a nicer and safer neighborhood that is closer to work and has better schools. Have you violated any laws by your actions or inactions? Have you made any ethical violations? Explain.

http://retiredlecturers.com

Assignment Guidelines:

  • Do you believe you acted unethically by not reporting the rotting stairs?  Why or why not?
  • How would you handle the situation if you were the owner of the organization and found out that your employee failed to do anything or report the rotting stairs?

Do you feel your actions or inactions warrant any disciplinary action? Explain. As an individual, do you feel that the scenario described could be or should be defended with something like “I was owed this raise and promotion because of my ability and time with the organization”? Explain.

  • Compose your findings into a Word document (850–1,100 words), and be sure to cite your sources.

Assignment 1B ( 3 to 5 paragraphs)

  1. Using the CTU Library and/or Google Scholar, find and describe an actual episode of a student, business professional, or well-known public figure being expelled, punished, or fired for plagiarism. Be careful to cite direct quotations from your article and to put the words into quotations, identifying the writer/speaker.
  2. Use this case as a springboard to discuss the importance of practicing academic honesty in school and beyond. In your answer, define plagiarism and describe ways that students and employees can unwittingly perpetrate academic dishonesty without realizing it.
  3. Finally, discuss what steps you can take to ensure that you are always properly crediting ideas that you use in your own work.

Your Individual Project should contain the following:

  • An introduction with a clear thesis statement
  • Body paragraphs with topic sentences
  • Supporting information in the form of quotes or paraphrased passages
  • A meaningful conclusion
  • A properly formatted reference page with at least one reliable source
  • Proper in text citations

In addition to these structural guidelines your individual project should also contain the following:

  • A cover page
  • Headers
  • Page numbers
  • Be double-spaced using 12 point, Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier fonts.

Tinkering with the Machinery of the Death Penalty 5-7 page paper due 2/19 in class
This essay will be comprised of roughly equal components of rhetoric and research. You will need to cite at least four separate sources in your Works Cited page, two of which would be library database sources – please connote which sources are library database sources by placing a check in pen, circling them or changing the color font. You must utilize Chicago citation style, and use it accurately. You should have your Handbook open as you check your citation style. Be conscientious regarding unintentionally appropriating the rhetoric of your sources. You do not want to be forced to utilize your considerable rhetoric skill to defend your own plagiarism case as well as your death row inmates’ for this assignment. As always, employ the Toulmin model of argument that ask you to provide evidence to support your claims, and then, provide explications for your evidence. Establish ethos by providing background information to establish yourself as an expert. Employ both logos and pathos in your argument. As always, I will be evaluating you on your rhetoric, organization, research, originality, profundity, style and fluidity. I will lower the grade for any missing citation. Choose one option. Include a title page and bibliography page and number and staple your pages

2. Develop a rebuttal of the major arguments against the death penalty. Tackle five or six of the primary arguments that are leveled against the death penalty and refute them as you argue for the sanctity of the death penalty as the ultimate punishment. We have read a lot of eloquent rhetoric from Justice Blackmun and Sister Helen, but do the facts support their claims? Is the death penalty really as racist and classist as critics claim? Does it really cost more to sentence a man to death than to support him in prison? Is lethal injection that cruel and unusual? The formula for this paper is easy to organize. Go to an anti-death penalty website and find an incendiary quote (or quote from our readings) and then, find evidence to refute the claim to show why abolitionists are twisting the facts, as you support the death penalty as necessary and just. After you logically refute the David Gales/Brucks, feel free to engage in pathos towards the end of your essay, as Justice Scalia does, to show your reader why we need the death penalty.
