At the American Society for Microbiology Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Disease scientific meeting I attended in Feb. 2013, it was very apparant through the

presentations that Biosurveillance and Biodetection has continued to evolve well past the biosensor type programs such as BioWatch into more of a web-crawler based

and/or SIMS monitoring system for infectious disease outbreaks. These systems were used to monitor the cholera outbreak after the Haiti earthquake as well as during

the early stages of the SARS outbreak. It has been suggested that such network analysis will allow detection of the presence of emerging infectious diseases from a

naturally or manmade causes such as bioterrorism or perhaps bioterror more rapidly than previous surveillance methods.

Thus, this week?s conference will move away from the prior terms’ foci on biosensor systems and look to the present and future trend of how outbreaks are monitored.

The Demand Chain

A demand chain is an interconnected series of business processes and activities designed so firms can understand, manage and motivate customer demand in markets within the firm’s current and potential capabilities and product range. If a firm does not understand its demand chain, it is impossible for the firm to design an effective supply chain. A value chain is essentially the demand chain plus the supply chain. Although presented as two distinct areas for analysis, in reality the demand chain and the supply chain must be harmonious, especially at the point of achieving theValue Proposition(refer to Figure 1.1 on page 19 of the Walters and Rainbird (2007) textbook for an illustration).

The purpose of this writing assignment is threefold. First it is simply a writing assignment for the sake of practicing. One of the fundamental purposes of a college education is to teach writing skills. I have personally written enough papers in my life to understand the resolve to write as little as possible. However, part of college is learning to follow directions and developing the necessary discipline to fulfill the minimum requirements.
