Paper #2: They Say, I Say – Look back over the songs you have written about this semester. What is a song that you find particularly interesting? Is there something about its production, composition, or critical perception of it that you want to talk about? Maybe there is an album or film that the Beatles produced that you want to examine. Whatever aspect of the Beatles you want to discuss (from guitars and amps to philosophical perspectives on the music), this assignment asks that you pick a topic to research and include your thoughtful perspective and commentary with the voices of critics/experts. You will use a minimum of four credible, authoritative sources that speak meaningfully about the Beatles. One of these sources can be our class text, Ian MacDonald’s Revolution in the Head. Another can come from the notes of musicologist Alan J. Pollack found on the web at http://www.icce.rug.nl/~soundscapes/…notes_on.shtml. Your task is to find a minimum of two scholarly sources that come from outside of our class materials. This will require you to start early and look through the stacks of an academic library (Walter Everett’s books are in Torreyson Library and Bailey Library) as well its electronic databases (JSTOR, Academic Search Premier, and ProQuest). Also, look at eBooks and books in the library’s catalog. Some texts may need to be ordered through interlibrary loan. Rick has both copies of Walter Everett’s books on reserve in his office. In fact, you should consider contacting us if you’re looking for a specific source. Here are some tasks you’ll need to accomplish in your essay. First, accurately paraphrase what the sources say about the song(s), album, or other aspect under scrutiny. What do you say in response? Consider using some of the “They Say/I Say” templates to make some of these moves. What points do the sources make about the song or album that you find helpful or unhelpful? Is there something overly biased or particularly insightful about what they have to say? We care what you have to say in response to the ideas of critics more informed than you The goal of this assignment is to help you find a place of authority in the midst of critics more informed than you. We will post some sample papers from last year in HCOL as models. Your paper should be no less than seven pages double-spaced using MLA format. This page count includes your Works Cited page. Keep in mind that seven pages is the minimum for acceptance and is not indicative of A-level work. This is not the maximum either. Due Apr. 8 by 8 a.m. Your required revision to this paper must be posted by Apr. 22 by 8 a.m.

Country specific Statistical Description and Summary Paper: You will need to pick a country that interests you and that you are interested in knowing about more. You will then gather “economic data” on this country, from at least 2 sources. Then you will briefly summarize this country’s current economic statistics(median income, population, etc). You may turn this paper in anytime in the FIRST half of the semester no later than Apr 10th.

There are no minimum words on the Statistical Paper. More than words, DATA and Data presentation (tables/charts) will be important. A good paper would have at least ONE table presenting the Demographic Data, and explain that data in a paragraph (or two).
However, as it is a 25 points paper- I would caution all of you to not exceed 10 hours of work and 3 pages.

You will also critically and thoughtfully react to a peer’s paper, their data sources and their presentation.A comment/review of a peer’s paper is Due by Apr 13th. This is worth 10 points

Your peer review must have

Clear Evaluation of Paper Presentation identifying strength and weakness of Presentation:

Addressed whether data and paper has been adequately presented and described verbally,
Is there a reasonable introduction,
Is there a reasonable concluding paragraphs
Comment on overall use of grammar, clarity of writing,
Does the author provide appropriate citations for sources

Clear Evaluation using Economics: You must address whether the paper you are evaluating has

Economic Data validity – Is it from a credible source, Method used,
Have the basic findings been presented using correct Economic terminology
Does the author select the proper information to present
Organizes and synthesizes evidence to reveal insightful patterns, differences, or similarities related to the question.
Have any questions been left unanswered

Instructions for Groups-

Provide a description of the environmental event/disaster you have identified. Include the following points:

Consider if the event was caused by humans or natural.
Examine the direct and indirect impact on immediate- and long-term public health.

History 100: The American Experience

Paper 3

Due via Blackboard/Turnitin by 11:59 pm, 4.22.2016

Length: 6-7 double-spaced pages with 1” margins and a standard 12-point typeface

Number your pages!

Please remember to cite your articles in properly-formatted endnotes. Your citations will NOT count towards your page count.

Step 1: Choose one historical theme from the twentieth century that interests you. Examples include race relations, labor relations, gender relations, immigration, the environment, and international relations.

Step 2: Identify specific topics of debate, prominent individuals, or events related to your theme during the period 1930-1970. (Step two is to help you with step three.)

Step 3: Using USC’s subscription to the Los Angeles Sentinel (an African American newspaper) and the Los Angeles Times (a mainstream newspaper), find articles that address your theme during the period 1930-1970. For each decade (ie 1930-1940, 1940-1950, 1950-1960, 1960-1970), find at least one article from each of the two newspapers discussing your theme. (This means you will need to cite at least 8 articles. The most successful essays will probably draw on more than the minimum number of newspaper articles.)

Step 4: Journalists at both the Los Angeles Times and Sentinel sought to report the news for their readers. What is the perspective of each newspaper on your chosen theme? Does the newspaper’s perspective change over the course of the twentieth century? Compare and contrast the approaches that the two newspapers take towards your theme. Did different social groups view the same issue/person/event differently? Similarly? Why? How does newspaper coverage compare to the way that relevant documents discuss your theme in Voices of Freedom? Remember that you are writing about perspectives on your theme rather than narrating the historical events that your newspaper articles describe.

Paraphrase; do not include any direct quotes. Proper use of in-text citations is imperative. If in-text citations are not included in this assignment, a zero will be assigned. Please read and review the chapter on in-text citations in your APA manual. Do not cite sources outside of the article that you are reviewing.
This assignment does not need to include a title page, abstract page, or reference page; however, each reference must be listed in current APA format at the beginning of each summary.
You will submit 4 documents total in your submission: the 3 PDF documents that you saved (1 for each article) and your Annotated Bibliography submitted as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file.
