Using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet, research the differences in culture and nonverbal communication. Every culture has a different understanding of what is appropriate nonverbal communication. In the United States, eye contact is a sign of attention or respect. In other cultures, eye contact is seen as rude and disrespectful. In this assignment, you will compare and contrast how a different culture you interact with in your daily life may interpret nonverbal communication differently than what is “culturally acceptable” in the United States. Make sure to take into account nonverbal gestures such as appearance, tone, space, eye contact, gestures, etc.

Based on your research and your personal experience, answer the following questions:

  • Explain why you picked the different culture that you are researching. How do you interact with that culture on a regular basis?
  • Compare and contrast the different cultures. Describe the similarities and differences in the way they both nonverbally communicate.
  • As the world becomes more global and cultures intersect, describe and analyze at least two ways you can use your findings in your daily life to help you be a more culturally competent communicator.

Write a 2-page paper in Word format (not counting title and reference pages). Apply APA standards for writing style to your work.

Society shapes life stages and individual experiences of aging. Americans place high value on a sense of individual achievement and responsibility, and so it is often difficult for us to embrace the notion that our destinies are not completely the product of our individual actions and choices. In our society it is very popular to focus on individual attitudes, the power of positive thinking, and individual responsibility. Is it really so simple? Is personal attitude all that matters? Or are there related social forces that do have an impact on whether we can find a job and how young we can possibly feel?

Based on research and personal experiences, for your initial discussion post address the following:

  1. To what extent do you as a human service and public service leader feel constrained by age norms and life course expectations? How aware are you and your friends of your expectations?
  2. Do you think that the stages of human development in the family in later life are possible to achieve only when we are old? Why or why not?
  3. How does our society use age? Why does chronological age make any difference whatsoever in our lives?

Support your discussion with references to the current literature in the field.

As tolerances grow for the personal possession and use of marijuana, there is a need for purposeful and well-grounded discussions on the impact the relaxation of criminal sanctions involving marijuana may have. Do laws prohibiting the growing, manufacturing, harvesting, processing, transporting, sale, distribution, possession and/or use of marijuana in any quantity reflect the socio-political values of the community; whether that community is a local town/city, a state, or the nation? Do these laws keep us safe? If prohibitions against marijuana are lifted, what’s next?

For the Final Project the student will compose a three-part position paper addressing the pros and cons of marijuana tolerance.

  • Part 1- How are the initial relaxations of the laws against marijuana an indication of a growing tolerance that should be fully adopted? All current restrictions against marijuana should be rescinded.
  • Part 2 – How are the initial relaxations of the laws against marijuana compromising the safety, security and “quality of life” in American communities? Prohibitions that have been modified should be re-enacted to their former restrictive level.
  • Part 3 – What impact will Part 1 and Part 2 have on the current prohibitions on other controlled dangerous substances (e.g., heroin, cocaine, meth-amphetamines, etc.)?

Despite commonly held beliefs about the popularity of presidents, presidents are elected by the Electoral College. This uniquely American institution consists of representatives of each state who cast the final ballots that actually elect the president. The total number of electors for each state is equal to the number of senators and representatives from that state in the U.S. Congress. The District of Columbia is accorded three electoral votes bringing the total number of votes to 538. Thus, the magic number for winning the presidency is 270 votes.Research the most recent presidential election using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet and write a paper on the topic. Include the following in your paper:Identify the major issues of concern to voters and compare how each presidential candidate addressed those issues.Summarize information relevant to the issues and the election.Evaluate the validity of each candidate’s arguments.Cite your sources and prepare a title and reference page according to APA standards.Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format (excluding title and reference pages). Apply APA standards for writing style to your work. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

This week’s writing assignment asks you to “think like a social scientist” in the (Hoover and Donovan sense). One thing social scientists try to do is explain differences. We focus on questions like “why are some countries rich and others poor” or “why are democratic revolutions stable and successful while others collapse and reverse themselves?” This week, I’d like to think about one of these puzzles:

Why was the global political effort to respond to ozone depletion* and acid rain more successful than the global political effort to respond to climate change?

Identify two possible answers to this question. For each of your two answers, a) write a paragraph explaining why it might be plausible, in your view, and b) write a paragraph outlining how one might “test” this theory–where we should look for evidence to see it it’s accurate or not, if we were researchers trying to do answer this question. Don’t worry if that data-gathering process is well beyond your capabilities–I’m not asking you to do it, just think about how it could be done.

*at least in reducing the sources of ozone depletion–due to the timeline of their effects, positive change is only now starting to occur.

Book Review Format

  1. Format

The book review should be 4-5 pages long.  When writing your paper, please organize and use the following headings to organize your review:

  1. Introduction

Please provide one paragraph that introduces the book. In your introduction, provide a brief discussion regarding what you thought about the book.  You should end the introduction with an outline detailing what you intend to focus on in your book review. Briefly tell the reader what major themes you will be discussing in your critical review.

  1. Brief Description of the Book

Please provide one to two paragraphs providing a basic description of the book.  Make sure you include a description of the major themes the author is trying to point out.

  1. Critical Review

Give your own critical assessment of a few of the major themes outlined in the book.  You can start from the points you found most interesting in the book. As you make your points, be sure to refer back to specific pages of the book that help illustrate your comments/critiques. When you reference, you must use ASA. This critical review should be about 2-3 pages long.

  1. Closing Comments and Reflections

This should be two paragraphs to one page in length.  Wrap up your arguments and critiques, emphasizing once again the points you have been focusing on throughout your review.

Use the Internet to research one (1) developing nation of your choice. Your research should include an examination of the effects that war and peace have on the distribution of foreign aid, as well as the material covered by the Webtext and lectures in Weeks 1 through 3.

Write a three to four (3-4) page research paper in which you:

  1. Assess the positive and negative effects that peace and war, respectively, have on the distribution of foreign aid in the developing country that you have selected. Support your response with concrete examples of each of the results that you have cited.
  2. Analyze the specific actions that the leadership of the selected country has taken, through the use of its foreign aid from donor nations and international lending institutions, to relieve the severe problems caused by warfare.
  3. Discuss whether or not the extension of foreign aid has successfully reduced poverty and the incidence of warfare in the selected country. Support your response with examples.
  4. Use at least five (5) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia, blogs, and other nonacademic websites do not qualify as academic resources. Approval of resources is at the instructor’s discretion. Resources must also be within the last seven (7) years.
  • There have been many theories regarding how the pyramids at Giza were constructed. Most experts agree that they were constructed as burial monuments for pharaohs, but “how” these ancient people constructed monuments of such great size without modern machinery is a mystery which is still being debated.

Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph paper in which you:

  1. Clearly state the “mystery” and provide a brief summary of at least two (2) reasonable and scholarly theories which could explain the mystery. Because some theories may sound far-fetched, include the source or promoter of each theory – such as a scientist, a historian, a theologian, etc.
  2. After summarizing at least two (2) scholarly theories, identify one (1) of the theories as the most plausible and provide at least two (2) convincing reasons why the theory you have chosen is the best one to explain the mystery. This will involve some critical reasoning skills on your part.
  3. Use at least two (2) sources plus the class textbook. (Three [3] sources total as the minimum) Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA style format. Both in-text citations and a References list are required. Citations and references must follow APA style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for guidance).
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. For our purposes, you may omit any abstract page.

Review the article entitled, “Can we talk?” and Section 2.2 of our text titled “Biological Sex and Gender.” Based on what you’ve learned in these readings, write a two-page paper (excluding title and reference pages) about your thoughts on this article. In your paper, be sure to address the following:

  • Can you relate to this article on self-disclosure in relationships? If so, explain what specifically you could relate to and provide examples of your own experiences. If not, what has your experience been regarding self-disclosure in your intimate relationships?
  • Do you agree that self-disclosure is important and directly related to satisfaction in relationships? Why or why not?
  • What about gender differences? Remember, although research has found differences in gender communication, it has also found similarities. What kind of similarities between genders have you experienced?
  • Lastly, remember that although research is based on generalizations, not everyone fits into these generalizations regarding gender. Do you feel like you fit into the generalizations?

1)      What is they main claim of the article—what does the research presented here tell us that we didn’t know before?

2)      Describe the method the author uses to demonstrate this position or argument. What kinds of data were used, and how were they used, to make the point? What are the main sources of evidence used by the author?

3)      What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article, from your perspective? What would you like to know that the author of the article doesn’t answer?

Length: The answer to question #1 can sometimes be one sentence, although other times it will require further elaboration. In some cases, the author’s main point or thesis will be made very clear, but other times the author will be more circumspect. You should always use your own words, although brief quotations may be helpful. The total length should be 600-700 words, which may include some short quotations. (Be sure to give the page number when directly quoting the author). You may answer the questions in order, or write an essay that answers all of them in an integrated manner, whichever you prefer. If you are unsure if a particular article is suitable, please feel free to send me the reference–I’ll give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
