Effect of Electricity Deregulation

Introduction:
Increased competition after deregulation was expected to increase the supply of electricity and lower prices, but high energy costs offset the effects of deregulation.

  • Californians wound up paying a high “price” because the state held down the price of electricity. Why did that happen?
  • Could this have been avoided? How?
  • What was the “well-intentioned” result of government regulation and intervention?

Final Paper

Understanding history can be more difficult than many people imagine. Historians concern themselves not only with what happened but with why it happened. They analyze and assess a variety of sources, including primary sources (ones created during the time period the historian is examining) and secondary sources (ones written by other historians after the period), to create their own interpretations of the past. For the Final Paper, students will not only learn about the past, but also experiment with the interpretive, analytical methodologies of the historian.

Choose from one of the topics below and review its history from 1865 to the present. Select six specific events or developments that span the years covered by this course, based on their impact on the topic and write a thesis. Your thesis should summarize the main conclusions that you drew while researching your topic and that you will support by creating a logical argument based on evidence (sources). In your paper, make sure to connect each of the events or developments you have chosen back to your main thesis

For example, a paper about African Americans might choose the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Power Movement as two of its events. In that case, the paper would provide basic information about the two movements. It would explain what each one revealed about the role of African Americans in broader American society in, respectively, the 1920s and the late 1960s, explain how and why the roles of African Americans in the 1920s differed from their roles in the late 1960s, and explain how events in the 1920s may have contributed to developments in the later decade.

Choose one of the following topics:

Native Americans African Americans Immigrants Women The paper must be four to five pages in length and must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. The paper must include an introduction, a thesis statement, and a conclusion that synthesizes and summarizes the findings of the body paragraphs. You must use at least six scholarly sources other than the textbook to support your claims. Of the six scholarly sources, at least two must be primary sources and at least four must be from the Ashford University Library. Many sources have been provided for you throughout the course; feel free to use those in your paper. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center.

The paper

Must include a title page with the following: Title of paper Student’s name Course name and number Instructor’s name Date submitted Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought. Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis. Must use at least six scholarly resources, including a minimum of two primary sources (such as those within the course). Your secondary sources must come from the Ashford University Library. You may use a maximum of two videos. Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

In what type of environment do you do your best writing? How would you characterize your writing? Has it been better? Has it been worse? Do you write better at night or in the morning? When you are confronted with a writing task, how do you begin? Do you write for pleasure or fun? Do you write for work? What is it about your writing that you would like to improve upon? Intro1 DQs EMS112

  1. Hello to all of my fellow Environmental Management Systems classmates!  My name is James.  I am 40 years old, and I live in Janesville, Wisconsin.  I have worked for most of my adult life in retail management, but decided last summer to make a change, and am currently working towards an Environmental Technology Certification to start with, and will possibly continue on towards a full Environmental Science Bachelor’s Degree, but I haven’t made up my mind on that quite yet. I guess that will depend on what kind of job opportunities present themselves.

I believe that this will be a very important class for me, in that I am hoping to pursue a career that combines my business management skills that I have acquired over the years, with the knowledge about environmental regulations and their importance that I am currently studying, and find something in an industry where I can utilize both of these tools in order to truly make a difference to our environment.  In the classes that I have taken up to this point, I have learned about many businesses, from multi-national corporations to small operations with only a handful of employees, that could use someone that could explain why it is so important to follow environmental regulations.  This is where I see myself fitting into.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, biking, and golfing (not that I get to do any of that in January living in Wisconsin, where it is currently four degrees outside as I’m writing this!).  I look forward to working with all of you over the next two months, and wish you all the best of luck!James

  1. My name is James and I prefer to be called James. I am a Soldier stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.  In the Army I am a Mechanic and a Non Commissioned Officer (NCO).  My current position is as my Company’s HQ Platoon Sergeant with a whole list of additional duties that I will not bore you with.  The Army has taken me and my family from Colorado, to Germany, to Oklahoma and now to Texas.  I am originally from West Virginia, but call South Carolina home after years of living there.  My wife is from Colorado and even though the plan has always been to retire in Colorado, Texas has slowly grown on us.  I have been in the Army for 18 years, and married for 15 years.  I have two wonderful children, ages 8 and 11 years old.

I have been attending AMU on and off now for seven years, the first couple of years I took classes sporadically but recently have become motivated to finish my Bachelor’s before I retire.  Last year I received my Associate’s degree in General Studies.  After taking off last summer I became refocused and since then I have completed classes at a great speed.  The goal is to be have my Bachelor’s in Environmental Science completed this year, so my last year of service I can focus on retiring from the Army.

When I retire I would like to pursue a career in the Fish and Wildlife industry; I currently get paid to spend a lot of time outdoors, but I would enjoy it more if it involved hunting, fishing and relaxing instead of tools, guns and heavy gear!  That is my main interest; however I am open to other opportunities in the Environmental field, such as corporate environmental positions.

I am taking this class mainly for the reason that I am required to take it as part of my degree plan.  However, since I am pursuing a career in the environmental field (even though I am no certain on which direction yet) the objectives within the syllabus will assist me in my career choices.   I feel that the course objectives will help me no matter which way I decide to go with my career.  They will give me the resources and capability to build my own management system plan and I am very interested in learning the steps to obtain the ISO -14001 certification.I wish everyone the Best of luck and I look forward to getting to know everyone.James C.

  1. My Name is Lacey, with a last name like that, Lacey works just fine for me. I was in the Air Force for 6 years and have been out for a couple of years now. My husband is still active duty which is keeping us stationed at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. I grew up in Rhode Island and moved to Florida my senior year of high school where I met my husband and joined the military. I have one son (toddler), with another on the way and two dogs that keep my hands full at home. I am a Help Desk Team Leader which keeps my hands full at work.

I truly love managing teams and finding ways to improve my area and my company which, keeps me motivated to continue on the path to my Bachelors in Business Management. IT is always changing and growing, there is always something new to learn, almost every day. I enjoy expanding my knowledge both personally and professionally and wish to continue that on through my Bachelors program. Once I complete my degree, I hope to move up in the management career track.

Growing up in New England where history runs very deep, I have always had an interest in learning about how life as we know it today, became what it is. I put 100% of my effort into all of my classes and when it is a subject I enjoy, it is just that much easier to give all of my effort to passing with as best of a score as I can achieve. Just staying focused is the key to success.I’m ready for another great class and looking forward to meeting everyone!-Lacey

  1. I hope everyone is excited to be in this class as much as I am.  I hope to learn a lot about the history of our great country. This course is the next building block to finishing my AA degree, and starting my degree in Homeland Security.  I currently enjoy reading current events on the web and any magazines that deals with what is happening in the world today.

In the beginning, I was born an Army brat in Ft. Benning, Georgia on June 25th 1982.  I have two older sisters, we lived in Georgia and Germany until I entered middle school.  My dad retired in 1993 and we moved to St. Cloud Florida where we lived until I joined the military in February of 2001.

After joining the Air Force, I moved back to Florida where I got stationed at Macdill AFB.  I became a Crew Chief on the KC-135R aircraft until I changed bases in the summer of 2007.  During this period I got to travel all over the world and see and do some amazing things.  Additionally, this is where I met my wife, we have been married for seven years.  Next, we got stationed at Hurlburt Field, Florida (I know another Florida base) where I cross-trained into a new job and became an Aviation Resource Manager.  While stationed at Hurlburt Field I got to go on multiple deployments, and met some great people. My wife and I had our first daughter there as well.  She was born in the fall of 2012.  Finally, the Air Force decided to move me out of Florida when I got reassigned to Aviano, Italy in the Jan 2013.  Here we have done some amazing traveling.  We have seen some amazing history that most can only dream about seeing.  We have roughly two more years left in Italy, and we hope to visit as much of Europe as our toddler will let us.  I am not sure what is next, but I know that I am almost done with this chapter in my life.  I have only six more years until I am retired.

After the military I plan to move to Georgia, and my goal is to work with a government organization like FEMA or TSA in or around the Atlanta area.  This is where we want to live and raise our children, because we enjoy the scenery, and we feel that it will be a great place to raise our children.Ciao,Brad K.

  1. Hello, my name is Jim McElwee.  I’ve been in the Air Force for almost 24 years and have held positions in ICBM missile maintenance, as a C-130 Loadmaster, and as Squadron & Group Superintendent. My assignments include bases in North Dakota, Georgia, Japan, Texas, California, and am currently stationed at Scott AFB in Illinois as the Air Mobility Command Expeditionary Operations Functional Area Manager. I am honored to have flown in my career and have over 3,500 flying hours with approximately 2,000 combat hours on Air Force C-130E/H aircraft.

My support system is anchored by my wife Kelly whom I’ve been married to for 13 years. We have three young ladies (Kate 7, Maddie 6, and Olivia 4) who we spend most of our time motivating to clean up their toys, do their homework, and brush their teeth.  When we’re not motivating, I enjoy playing golf, BBQing almost anything/everything, taking trips to Las Vegas, and I’ve been known to play a hand or two of poker (played twice in the World Series of Poker).

I currently have associate degrees in Aviation Operations and Electronic Systems Technology. I’m aware my shelf life in Air Force is very short and will need at least an undergraduate degree to be somewhat competitive in my job search.  Because of that, I have been taking online classes for a couple years now and plan on finishing my Bachelor’s degree before I retire in 2017.Although my area of concentration primarily is in Logistics Management, I really enjoy history and hope to expand my knowledge of early American history by the end of this course. I really look forward to getting to know all of you better in the next eight weeks.Cheers,Jim M.

  1. Hi, my Name is Chris.  I am 24 years old currently enrolled in college in pursuit of my end goal of being a Navy nurse corps officer.   I am from Mississippi, and my favorite historical site is in Vicksburg at the battlefield park.  It has lots of historic sites and structures from the civil war.

I am active duty, currently stationed in Millington, Tennessee.  I’m newly married as of August, to my wonderful wife Devin, and we live with our two dogs Woofie a husky, and Lizzie a Labrador puppy.  My hobbies are hunting ducks and deer, fishing, camping and hiking, and pretty much anything outdoors.  My friends and I are currently planning two trips for next year one to do some whitetail hunting, and another to start hiking some of the Appalachian Trail.  We plan on trying to get together for at least a few days a year and hiking a portion until we finish the whole thing.

History in high school was one of my favorite subjects.  I had a really interesting teacher, and it is just always interesting to me to see all the things that happened in the past.  I really look forward to learning about all the things that have come together to make America the country it is today.  I usually hate writing lengthy papers, but the two required for this class, I actually think I will really enjoy doing the research and exploring the in depth aspects of American history. I think I will get a strong sense of what has made America, America from this class.  I think I will see the smaller pieces that made the large common building blocks most people know as what has formed our country into a world leading nation.Chris J.
