Human development in psychology focuses on the life span of people and identifies aspects which change and remain the same.

In the last class presentation we discussed a few perspectives (biological, ecological and biological/ecological) within Human development. Then, we watched 20 minutes of a documentary film: ‘Louder Than A Bomb’, and were asked to link what you heard, observed, and remembered of the characters in the film, and utilize the a the ecological perspective to deepen your thoughts. This exercise is a creative way to apply the information by linking theory with action.

Please continue to develop your thoughts utilizing one of the 3 perspectives below. Write at least 3-4 sentences of developed linked thoughts.

Utilizing the Ecological perspective (Bronfenbrenner), identify and describe the environment(s) that the you as an adolescent experienced.
Psychodynamic Perspective: Projective identification. Which one of the high school students did you like or identify the most with? Please clarify your thoughts with clear detail, or a concrete example to clarify your ideas.
Take Erik Erikson’s stages of Psychosocial Development and identify how you as an adolescents experienced one of the stages: Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role.
Please read your notes and the textbook material as you develop your thoughts. Thank you!

Week Five Assignment

Please complete the following 5 exercises below in either Excel or a word document (but must be single document). You must show your work where appropriate (leaving the calculations within Excel cells is acceptable). Save the document, and submit it in the appropriate week using the Assignment Submission button.

1. Basic present value calculations

Calculate the present value of the following cash flows, rounding to the nearest dollar:

a.       A single cash inflow of $12,000 in five years, discounted at an 11% rate of return.

b.      An annual receipt of $16,000 over the next 12 years, discounted at an 11% rate of return.

c.       A single receipt of $15,000 at the end of Year 1 followed by a single receipt of $10,000 at the end of Year 3. The company has a 12% rate of return.

d.      An annual receipt of $8,000 for three years followed by a single receipt of $10,000 at the end of Year 4. The company has an 11% rate of return.

2. Cash flow calculations and net present value

On January 2, 20X7, Brian Rein invested $10,000 in the stock market and purchased 500 shares of Heartland Development, Inc. Heartland paid cash dividends of $2.70 per share in 20X7 and 20X8; the dividend was raised to $3.30 per share in 20X9. On December 31, 20X9, Rein sold his holdings and generated proceeds of $13,100. Rein uses the net-present- value method and desires a 16% return on investments.

a.       Prepare a chronological list of the investment’s cash flows. Note: Rein is entitled to the 20X9 dividend.

b.      Compute the investment’s net present value, rounding calculations to the nearest dollar.

c.       Given the results of part (b), should Rein have acquired the Heartland stock? Briefly explain.

3. Net present value

The City of Brighton is studying a 550-acre site on Route 401 for a new landfill. The startup cost has been calculated as follows:

Purchase cost: $400 per acre

Site preparation: $180,000

The site can be used for 20 years before it reaches capacity. Brighton, which shares a facility in Bath Township with other municipalities, estimates that the new location will save $40,000 in annual operating costs.

a.       Should the landfill be acquired if Brighton desires an 8% return on its investment? Use the net-present-value method to determine your answer.

4. Net-present-value

ABC Entertainment is considering the acquisition of a sight-seeing boat for summer tours along the Mississippi River. The following information is available:

Cost of boat$550,000

Service life10 summer seasons

Disposal value at the end of 10 seasons$100,000

Capacity per trip260 passengers

Fixed operating costs per season (including straight-line depreciation)$160,000

Variable operating costs per trip$1,000

Ticket price$6 per passenger

All operating costs, except depreciation, require cash outlays. On the basis of similar operations in other parts of the country, management anticipates that each trip will be sold out and that 130,000 passengers will be carried each season. Ignore income taxes.

Instructions:

By using the net-present-value method, determine whether ABC Entertainment should acquire the boat. Assume a 14% desired return on all investments,- round calculations to the nearest dollar.

5. Equipment replacement decision

Richardson Enterprises is studying the replacement of some equipment that originally cost $74,000. The equipment is expected to provide six more years of service if $8,500 of major repairs are performed in two years. Annual cash operating costs total $28,000. Richardson  can sell the equipment now for $37,000; the estimated residual value in six years is $5,000.

New equipment is available that will reduce annual cash operating costs to $21,000. The equipment costs $105,000, has a service life of six years, and has an estimated residual value of $13,000. Company sales will total $430,000 per year with either the existing or the new equipment. Richardson has a minimum desired return of 12% and depreciates all equipment by the straight-line method.

Instructions:

a.       By using the net-present-value method, determine whether Richardson should keep its present equipment or acquire the new equipment. Round all calculations to the nearest dollar, and ignore income taxes.

b.      Richardson’s management feels that the time value of money should be considered in all long-term decisions. Briefly discuss the rationale that underlies management’s belief.

Under the terms of the current contractual agreement, Burger Queen (BQ) is entitled to 20 percent of the revenue earned by each of its franchises. BQs best-selling item is the Slopper (it slops out of the bun). BQ supplies the ingredients for the Slopper (bun, mystery meat, etc.) at cost to the franchise. The franchisee’s average cost per Slopper (including ingredients, labor cost, and so on) is $.80. At a particular franchise restaurant, weekly demand for Sloppers is given by P = 3.00 – Q/800.

a.       If BQ sets the price and weekly sales quantity of Sloppers, what quantity and price would it set? How much does BQ receive? What is the franchisee’s net profit?

b.       Suppose the franchise owner sets the price and sales quantity. What price and quantity will the owner set? ( Hint:Remember that the owner keeps only $.80 of each extra dollar of revenue earned.) How does the total profit earned by the two parties compare to their total profit in part (a)?

c.        Now, suppose BQ and an individual franchise owner enter into an agreement in which BQ is entitled to a share of the franchisee’s profit. Will profit sharing remove the conflict between BQ and the franchise operator? Under profit sharing, what will be the price and quantity of Sloppers? (Does the exact split of the profit affect your answer? Explain briefly.) What is the resulting total profit?

d.       Profit sharing is not widely practiced in the franchise business. What are its disadvantages relative to revenue sharing?

This assignment will require you to do a bit of reading and research, so it may take you longer than the typical homework to complete. Trust me, you don’t want to start it the night before it is due! For this assignment, you will be using the Naked Economics text to understand applications of the concepts we have been learning in class and come up with some real world examples of your own. Our goal is to think critically in order to connect what might seem like abstract microeconomics to your everyday life. By the end of it, no one will feel like asking me, ‘When am I ever going to use this stuff?!’ (Right?) There are three parts to the assignment – (1) Concept, where you will summarize the relevant material, (2) Text, where you will draw on examples from the Naked Economics text, and (3) Application, where you will come up with some relevant examples of your own. Part 1 – Concept First, choose one of the concepts from class that interests you from the list below. The topic you choose is completely up to you. Provide a brief summary of the relevant models surrounding your topic. This does not need to be more than half a page/a few paragraphs, plus relevant graphs if applicable. Think quality, not quantity. Part 2 – Text Next, read the related portion of the Naked Economics text and discuss some examples provided by the author to illustrate the relevance of your topic. If there are many, you only need to provide one or two. Again, think quality over quantity here. Another half a page/a paragraph or two is more than enough. Side note: the book is a very interesting read, I highly recommend you read it in its entirety especially if you decide economics is an interesting topic to you (it is!). Part 3 – Application This is the most important part of the assignment. Here you will come up with two examples of your topic that you have encountered in your life. For example, if your topic is externalities, you might mention (as I would) that your neighbor provides a positive externality to you with the addition of a beautiful sounding fountain in their backyard. Make sure you explain the relevance of your example to the topic. In other words, the fountain provides excess benefits that my neighbor does not incorporate in his analysis of whether to install it or not. The excess benefits are the positive externality in the form of beautiful running water sounds that mask the sound of the freeway. If he thought about the externality provided, he would install one in my yard as well! Lastly, provide an example from the real world. For this part I ask that you find a newspaper, magazine, etc. article (online is fine of course, as long as it is from a reputable source such as the LA Times or The Economist, and not The Onion) or some data on your topic. Data should also come from a reputable source, such as the Census, the Current Population Survey, Statistical Abstract of the United States, the Survey of Income and Program Participation, the National Vital Statistics Report, the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED), etc. Explain how it is relevant to your topic, and please attach to your assignment. This portion should be a bit longer, approximately a page or even two, since it requires the most in depth and interesting analysis of your three examples. In total your assignment does not need to exceed 2-3 pages, plus your attached article or data. As usual, if you have any questions at all come see me. If you are not sure whether your data is from a reliable source or your examples are relevant to your topic it is easiest just to check with me. Presentation The final part of this assignment is an optional presentation component. This assignment will be worth up to 50 points, the presentation gives you the opportunity for up to an additional 10 points. In terms of your final grade, this can add up to 1% and has the potential to increase your final letter grade in the course. If you decide to present, you must turn in your assignment at the same time. Depending how many students take advantage of this opportunity, the presentation should be approximately 5-8 minutes long and cover each of the three portions of the assignment, with emphasis on the last Application section. The presentation format is up to you – PowerPoint slides, write on the board or any other format you like better. Time permitting, be prepared for me to ask questions! As an added incentive to those brave souls willing to present in the first round, I will give those students the opportunity for up to 15 points extra credit. Showyour calculations for each ratio.

Create a horizontal and vertical analysis for the balance sheet and the income statement.

Write a 350- to 700-word memo to the CEO of your selected organization in which you discuss your findings from your ratio calculations and your horizontal and vertical analysis. In your memo, address the following questions:

  • What do the liquidity, profitability, and solvency ratios reveal about the company’s financial position?
  • Which users may be interested in each type of ratio?

What does the collected data reveal about the company’s performance and position?

In The Budget Balance powerpoint, I pointed out that the real economic sacrifice imposed on the country by government borrowing could be zero – or it could be substantial – depending on what the government does with the money. In the article, “Entitlements, Public Investment, and the Changing Nature of the U.S. Government,” on Tim Taylor’s blog, Conversable Economist, we find that ‘what the government does with the money’ has been changing over time in a consistent manner. I want you to consider three points related to that article: 1. How has the composition of government spending changed since the 1960’s? Support your answer with examples from the article. 2. Then explain how the various categories of federal government spending (such as spending on entitlements, or infrastructure or basic research) qualify as either consumption or investment spending. In your answer, be sure to define the terms ‘consumption’ and ‘investment.’ 3. Explain how the changing pattern of government spending affects the real economic burden of the national debt.
