Two of the Learning Goals for this Course are:

1. Articulate the relevance of Earth Science to individuals and to society.

2. Evaluate Earth Science related topics presented in the media, on the basis of the evidence presented and your knowledge of physical processes.

You will further examine the theme of these Learning Goals here in ‘Assignment 2’.

Specifically, this REQUIRED activity has 2 parts. It is worth a total of 9% of your Course Grade (6% for Part 1, 3% for Part 2). For FULL MARKS, make posts that are thoughtful and which contribute to your own and your colleagues learning in this course. Details about grading are in the rubric below.

During this exercise you will (1) analyze a media article that is relevant to the course and articulate your findings in a short, well written essay post which finishes by asking 2 well-founded questions, (2) reply to one of the questions posed by your colleagues about their initial post PLUS post a minimum of TWO discussion contributions about your own OR a colleague’s topic.

PART 1. The first part of this assignment is due no later than March 14 (11pm).

To do:

  • Upload your Media Article. See instructions below.
  • Write your Post 1.
  • Upload your Post 1 as well as your original Media Article into your Small Group Discussion Board. See instructions below.

Post 1 Specific Instructions

Post 1 – Essay Content

Your essay should include two main components.

Firstly you should use what you know about physical processes (from the course) to analyze the scientific evidence given in the article.

Secondly you can do one of two things:

1. Explain how the article’s findings impact either individuals or society as a whole. In other words, add new insights into how the science in the article might change the way either individuals, or society in general, operates.

or

2. Assess the validity of the assertions and conclusions given in the article. In other words analyze the accuracies or inaccuracies in the discussion or conclusions presented.

In addition to the two main components outlined above, your essay should have a short introductory sentence or two and finish with a concluding sentence or two.

Make sure that your essay does not just summarize the original article. Also, we are NOT looking for a personal opinion piece but rather a fact driven analysis of your media piece. Take some time to work on your submission so that it flows logically from one idea to another.

Essay Specifics

Your essay should not be less than 400 words and should not exceed 500 words. The news article that is the subject of our post must be cited. [Also, please attach a copy of your research article to your essay post or include a direct link or address to your article so that other students (and the instructor and TA) can refer to it if they would like to.] Beyond that, it is not necessary to go outside the course readings and materials to complete your essay. If you do decide to research further work beyond the course, you should include citations in your essay text where required. Include the specifics of the original article and any relevant references at the bottom of your essay. (See the FAQs for more specifics on eligible references.)

Post 1 – Required Questions to Follow Essay

At the end of your essay you should post two substantive scientific questions that were raised in your mind from the article you chose. Each question and justification should be roughly 100 words (this is in addition to the 400 – 500 words for your essay itself).

  • Include some explanation or justification for why you are asking this question. Do not simply pose the question and leave it at that. You must explain to your colleague what it is about your piece AND your own knowledge that caused you to wonder about the issue you identify as a question.
  • Here are some examples of the way a question might arise in your mind:
    1. The original article said xyz but I heard/read that abc (with a reference).  I wonder if…, or it doesn’t make sense to me that …”, or similar …
    2. “What the original article said about xyz seems unexpected because … xyz (use logic, &/or a reference). I wonder where / how / why … .” etc.
    3. “The original article is interesting … and isn’t it also true that … (with a reference) …?” etc.

Addresses course outcomes 1 and 4:

recognize and explain how the scientific method is used to solve problems
weigh evidence and make decisions based on strengths and limitations of scientific knowledge and the scientific method
Before starting this assignment you might want to revisit the Scientific Method Tutorial in the Science Learning Center under the Content area.

Researchers recently investigated whether or not coffee prevented the development of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in laboratory mice. The mice used in this experiment have a mutation that makes them become diabetic. Read about this research study in this article published on the Science Daily web-site New Evidence That Drinking Coffee May Reduce the Risk of Diabetes as well as the following summary:

A group of 11 mice was given water, and another group of 10 mice was supplied with diluted black coffee (coffee:water 1:1) as drinking fluids for five weeks. The composition of the diets and living conditions were similar for both groups of mice. Blood glucose was monitored weekly for all mice. After five weeks, there was no change in average body weight between groups. Results indicated that blood glucose concentrations increased significantly in the mice that drank water compared with those that were supplied with coffee. Finally, blood glucose concentration in the coffee group exhibited a 30 percent decrease compared with that in the water group. In the original paper, the investigators acknowledged that the coffee for the experiment was supplied as a gift from a corporation.

Then answer the following questions in your own words:

1. Identify and describe the steps of the scientific method. Which observations do you think the scientists made leading up to this research study? Given your understanding of the experimental design, formulate a specific hypothesis that is being tested in this experiment. Describe the experimental design including control and treatment group(s), and dependent and independent variables. Summarize the results and the conclusion (50 points)

2. Criticize the research described. Things to consider: Were the test subjects and treatments relevant and appropriate? Was the sample size large enough? Were the methods used appropriate? Can you think of a potential bias in a research study like this? What are the limitations of the conclusions made in this research study? Address at least two of these questions in your critique of the research study (20 points).

3. Discuss the relevance of this type of research, both for the world in general and for you personally (20 points).

4. Write answers in your own words with proper grammar and spelling (10 points).

5. Your work should be approximately 300 – 400 words, double-spaced. All of your references should be in APA format.

The original peer-reviewed research article that the above Science Daily article discusses can be found in the Content area. You may want to look at the peer-reviewed scholarly article for more detail (not required).

Avoid plagiarism

It is very important to write with your own words. If you do copy one or two sentences directly (use sparingly), use quotation marks (“) around the copied text. All information sources need to be included in the reference list and as in-text references. Plagiarism will be reported to the proper UMUC authority. Guidance on how to avoid plagiarism can be found here: UMUC’s How to Avoid Plagiarism

Submission

Submit in assignment folder by the end of the second week of class.

Human development in psychology focuses on the life span of people and identifies aspects which change and remain the same.

In the last class presentation we discussed a few perspectives (biological, ecological and biological/ecological) within Human development. Then, we watched 20 minutes of a documentary film: ‘Louder Than A Bomb’, and were asked to link what you heard, observed, and remembered of the characters in the film, and utilize the a the ecological perspective to deepen your thoughts. This exercise is a creative way to apply the information by linking theory with action.

Please continue to develop your thoughts utilizing one of the 3 perspectives below. Write at least 3-4 sentences of developed linked thoughts.

Utilizing the Ecological perspective (Bronfenbrenner), identify and describe the environment(s) that the you as an adolescent experienced.
Psychodynamic Perspective: Projective identification. Which one of the high school students did you like or identify the most with? Please clarify your thoughts with clear detail, or a concrete example to clarify your ideas.
Take Erik Erikson’s stages of Psychosocial Development and identify how you as an adolescents experienced one of the stages: Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role.
Please read your notes and the textbook material as you develop your thoughts. Thank you!

Calculations: Calculate the client’s target heart rate using the Karvonen formula.
Training Program: Design a 12-week periodized training program for the client described in the Client Profile. Be very specific as you design the training program. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your full comprehension of the information and concepts discussed throughout the course. List the types of exercise, duration, sets, reps, rest intervals, and so on.
Include the following in your case study submission:
A description of your professional responsibilities as discussed in the stages of the drawing-in process (Unit 12)
Discussion of any fitness tests, methods of evaluation, and data collection used to assess and evaluate the clientÕs needs
Specific conditions that you have identified in the client profile
A detailed 12-week comprehensive and periodized training program including specific exercises, sets, repetitions, suggested rest times, etc. Use an integrated approach in your program recommendations.
Specific and detailed nutritional strategies and an explanation as to how the strategies will assist the client in meeting energy needs
Explanation for your chosen assessment, programming, and nutritional recommendations. (Be sure to reference course concepts when discussing rationale for your recommendations.
Keep in mind that a client should be able to take your program and put it into practice without having to contact you to clarify what you intended by your recommendations or to explain parts of your program.
Don’t forget your explanation for WHY you listed and recommended what you did. Reference the concepts and theories covered in the course. Be sure to address why the program and exercises recommended are appropriate for the specific client given the clientÕs history, current abilities, and intended goal(s). For example: if you are developing a program for a beginner client without any resistance training experience, explain how your program addresses the lack of experience, initial need for foundational development, process by which you would safely progress the client, etc. Tying your program to course concepts is a critical component of your case study.

Review the Client Profile below.
Client Profile: Steve Rogers

(2200 words needed)

B&M was formed in 1978 and they are variety retailers in the UK. B&M operate 450 stores across UK and employs 20,000 workers (http://www.bandmretail.com/).

You should outline the essential components for ‘effective business operations management’ for B&M stores (B&M) in the UK. Use a soft systems methodology to evaluate the issues B&M might face if they decide to introduce facilities to enable their customers to order goods online and have them delivered to the door. Support your discussion with appropriate business operations models (i.e. operation strategy performance (priorities) model, customer value, the service gap model, four v’s profile etc.).

TIPS:

1. You should start with what B&M are doing well compare to the sector (why customers turn up to the stores).

2. Research the problems they may face going online (the change) using Soft Systems Methodology (critical analysis

of need/problem to be solved).

3. Support your discussions with appropriate operations models (quality/depth).

You should compare and contrast different models used by the sector in which B&M operates and recommend appropriate solutions for online shopping, make easier for customers to select and buy their products with fully integrated mobile applications (issues to consider centralised/ decentralised inventory and delivery chain, customer value chain, cost implications, sustainability etc.).With reference to the parcel conundrum (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18709348)recommend how B&M should respond to this conundrum (keeping in mind the possible technological and environmental (CO2) impact).

TIPS:

4. Your academic enquiry should lead to synthesis of important issues around the problem and solution.

5. Critical analysis and evaluation of customer’s digital experience.

6. Innovative ways to serve their customers better.

7. Consider the services which are unique and benefits to B&M.

8. Consider customer value for shopping online.

9. Comparison of different solution with costing and choose one solution to take forward with reasoning.

Analyzing inventory reductions at Supervalue

On January 12, 2010, Supervalu, Inc., announced it was planning to reduce the number of different items it carries in its inventory by as much as 25 percent. Supervalu is one of the largest grocery store companies in the United States. It operates more than 2,400 stores under 14 different brand names, including Albertsons, Farm Fresh, Jewel-Osco, and Save-A-Lot. The company also has a segment that provides third-party supply-chain services. The planned reduction in inventory items was going to be accomplished more by reducing the number of different package sizes than by reducing entire product brands. The new approach was also intended to allow the company to get better prices from its vendors and to put more emphasis on its own store brands.

Required

a. Identify some costs savings Supervalu might realize by reducing the number of items it carries in inventory by 25 percent. Be as specific as possible and use your imagination.

b. Consider the additional information presented below, which is hypothetical. All dollar amounts are in thousands; unit amounts are not.

Assume that Supervalu decides to eliminate one product line, Sugar-Bits, for one of its segments that currently produces three products. As a result, the following are expected to occur:

(1)  The number of units sold for the segment is expected to drop by only 40,000 because of the elimination of Sugar-Bits, since most customers are expected to purchase a

Fiber-Treats or Carbo-Crunch product instead. The shift of sales from Sugar-Bits to Fiber-Treats and Carbo-Crunch is expected to be evenly split.

In other words, the sales of Fiber-Treats and Carbo-Crunch will each increase by 100,000 units.

(2)  Rent is paid for the entire production facility, and the space used by Sugar-Bits cannot be sublet.

(3)  Utilities costs are expected to be reduced by $24,000.

(4) T he supervisors for Sugar-Bits were all terminated. No new supervisor will be hired for Fiber-Treats or Carbo-Crunch.

(5)  Half of the equipment being used to produce Sugar-Bits is also used to produce the other two products, and its depreciation must be absorbed by those products.

The company believes that as a result of eliminating Sugar-Bits it can eliminate equipment that has a remaining useful life of five years,

and a projected salvage value of $20,000. Its current market value is $35,000.

(6)  Facility-level costs will continue to be allocated between the product lines based on the number of units produced.

2. How do managers go about making segment or product line elimination decisions?

Coping with Project Risk on Technology Implementation & Transformation Projects within a Large Organization – The Case for Superior Risk Management Discipline In September 2010, CHEMICS Insurance advised its staff that their all their offices would receive an overhaul of systems and processes. This was a technology overhaul program at its core. Yet there was an opportunity to streamline the business process to enable straight-through-processing and improve support levels. The new procedures and tools will promise to solve a variety of issues with have plagued the organization. The new tools would be simpler to use to conduct business, easier to train, and easier to support for the IT department. The project was scoped and estimated to be impacting 20,000 employees in the US division before it was deployed to the company’s international offices. Code named “The CHEMICS Method”, the project had a life time budget of $50M from start to completion and it was estimated that the program would take 3 full years to complete. The senior executive group envisioned some of the clear benefits of the project before signing off on the expenditure. A senior project management team was assembled comprising of internal CHEMICS resources and external consultants. The project would impact nearly every facet of the organizations, including HR, Pre-sales, and External Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, Claims, IT, Billing and other Back office. Every business process would be changed and streamlined as part of the project. Sophisticated, role-based workflow systems would be deployed to enter, collect, collate, and analyze business data. Real-time client information would be available and seamlessly integrated throughout the different departments. The promise was to reduce business costs and streamline the company’s operations which had not been done in any holistic manner for the past 150 years of the company’s existence. The project was kicked off in January of 2011 with each stakeholder signing off prior to launch. The company was committed and a risk management plan was put together along with other project planning deliverables including a program plan, process documentation, project information portals, and a document management system to help manage the project and the related documentation that was being developed. One year later, senior management started to sense that adequate progress was not being made. Project management reports were being circulated and all indicators were seemingly positive. However, material progress had not been made given the following observations by senior management: · There were no new systems components being built and tested · Process documents were produced but not signed off by the concerned stakeholders of impacted departments · Low staff confidence levels were observed regarding The CHEMICS Method project given conversations being had “around the water cooler”. · $10M dollars of the program budget were being spent · Many issues and risks were being reported by various departments, yet not acknowledged · by the project management related deliverables · Significant process and technology rework was being performed without material · finalization · One third of the entire project timeline had already been expended to date. · Three consulting vendors were changed by the program management team over the course of the one year. · Without hesitation, senior management concluded that the program was in serious trouble. Without question, a course-correction was required. Questions Senior management has chosen to hire you as an expert project management consulted, not otherwise connected with the program thus far, to conduct an assessment. 1. How would you set about conducting such a review? 2. How would you structure your report, i.e. on what basis? 3. Clearly, your report concludes that there is a risk management issue for this program. How would you recommend addressing this issue? What could a comprehensive risk management plan look like and how would you include it in the overall program plan going forward? Specific issues you have been asked to include: 4. Would the assignment of a CHEMICS project manager have made a difference? 5. If so, in what way, and what specific skills would that manager have required? 6. What are the lessons learned?

Assignment: Practicum Week 9 Journal Entry

An advance directive is a legal document that defines a patients wishes for medical care. This document is a way for patients to share their wishes with family members and health care providers when their illness or mental capacity prevents them from making decisions. As an advanced practice nurse who has care discussions with patients and their families, you need to not only be familiar with the process of completing an advance directive, but also understand how this document might impact your role in patient care and treatment.

Journal Entry Part 1

For the first part of your journal entry, reflect on the Five Wishes presented on the Five Wishes website and PDF and complete your Five Wishes. Explain your states requirements for advance directives, including whether your Five Wishes can be turned into a formal document. Then, explain how your experience of completing your Five Wishes advance directive will help you guide discussions with patients and their families. Finally, explain how you might apply the Five Wishes advance directives to your nursing practice. Include how this advance directive might benefit patients in decision making for specialized areas of care.

Journal Entry Part 2

For the second part of your journal entry, reflect on geriatric patients from your practicum site with disorders related to specialized areas of care, such as oncology, nephrology, urology, gynecology, and neurology. Describe a case of a frail elder patient who must make decisions related to specialized areas of care. Then, explain potential patient outcomes and include whether treatments would be beneficial and how they would impact the patients quality of life. Finally, describe the patients wishes in terms of treatments and interventions for the disorder (Was there an advanced directive?) and how the patient might want to spend any remaining time. Include how environmental factors, such as family, caregivers, ethnicity, culture, religion, and/or personal values, might impact decision making for treatments and interventions. If you did not have an opportunity to evaluate a patient with this background during the last 9 weeks, you can select a related case study or reflect on previous clinical experiences.
