Social Science

Prompt: Respond to the following short answer prompt: Imagine you are a lead social science researcher and are responsible for approving students’ proposed research studies. Review the three sample proposals below and provide brief feedback to summarize any ethical concerns you have related to each of the proposals, based on what you know about ethical codes and expectations in the social sciences.

 1. Proposal 1: Racial Predisposition– The aim of this study is to examine the direct link between biological race and violent criminal activity. In this study, I plan to prove the direct and positive correlation between biological race and incidence of committing violent crimes. This will then prove that race is the strongest indicator of tendency toward violent crimes.

2. Proposal 2: Electroshock Therapy – In this study, I will examine the effect of electroshock therapy on undesirable behavior in human subjects. This study will administer electrical shocks to human subjects as a disciplinary measure when undesirable behavior is observed. The goal of the study is to determine whether the electroshock therapy is a suitable treatment for resolving disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents. If this therapy is found to be effective, it will be prescribed to resolve disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents.

3. Proposal 3: Health Problems, Diet, and Socioeconomic Status – This study aims to examine the relationship between health problems (diabetes, heart disease, and obesity), diet, and socioeconomic status. It is proposed that people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to encounter these problems. Research will be conducted on human subjects where data are collected on diet (the types of food consumed along with money spent on food), and this will be related to the overall health of individuals in the study. The results and findings of this research will be published publicly so others can see the risks of consuming cheap, low-quality food.

CIS 560 Case Study 2: Cisco’s Remote Access

Cisco’s Remote Access

Go to Cisco’s Website and read, “How Cisco IT Provides Remote Access for Small Offices and Teleworkers”, located at http://bit.ly/MkvlbA. According to the study, an IDC forecast from December 2007, expected the global mobile worker population to increase from 758.6 million in 2006 to more than 1.0 billion in 2011. Cisco had a significant number of telecommuting employees and faced three challenges: provide network access features that cannot be supported on a software VPN client, automate and simplify router provisioning and updates, and enable a scalable VPN solution to support up to 30,000 workers.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

Evaluate the deployment cost savings realized by Cisco, and determine if it was significant.
Analyze how the solution deployed by Cisco improved:employee productivity
satisfaction
retention
Discuss how Cisco was able to achieve VPN scalability to support thousands of users.
When thousands of employees telecommute and work in virtual offices, there are benefits to the environment. Discuss the environmental impact of the Cisco telecommuting and virtual offices solution.
Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

Define proper security controls within the User Domain to mitigate risks and threats caused by human behavior.
Use technology and information resources to research issues in access control.
Write clearly and concisely about topics related to Security Access & Control Strategies using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

Attitude, Legislation, And Litigation

Write an essay of 1,000-1,250 words in which you address the social implications of attitude, legislation, and litigation on the lives of students with disabilities. Include the following components in your essay:

  1. Explain how thinking has changed regarding the understanding of students with disabilities. How has legislation and litigation influenced the education of students with disabilities?
  2. There are many challenges facing educators, which include increasingly higher standards and teacher accountability for student performance. What do you predict will happen to students with disabilities in the current educational climate and special education in the future?
  3. What was your initial response during your first personal encounter with an individual with a disability? Based on your current knowledge and experiences, how would your response be different now?

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the GCU Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. Be sure to use three scholarly sources to prepare your paper.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar expectations for successful completion.

"Sequencing Strategy"

Using the three (3) Posner and Strike Sequencing Schemes (Chapter 6), create a sequencing scheme for beginners based on the objectives you developed for the e-Activity in Week 2. Be sure to include the related objective, type of sequence scheme, phenomenon, and example prescription or principle. Provide a rationale to support the type of sequencing scheme selected.

  • Remember, sequencing is basically the order of activities that teachers or trainers must carry out when delivering instruction, and a scheme is basically a plan of actions.
  • Thus, come up with a learning scheme or plan in sequential order that you as an instructor or trainer wants your trainees or students to do.
  • The Posner and Strike Sequencing Schemes are presented in Chapter 6 of Morrison's text, starting with page 124.  Use this resoure, so you can come up with a sequencing scheme.  Remember, this activity will be similar to how you will be asked to write a flowchart for the First Written Assignment.

In 250 to 300 words, your post must establish, comment on, and analyze the following:

  • Who is the audience of the Usability Testing for Kids and Teens page? How do you know? Use textual evidence within the page itself to support your analysis of who is reading this page. What examples about usability testing kids and teens does the page provide?
  • After scanning both pages, how does the US government adapt advice for usability testing kids and teens? Please use specific examples and comparisons from both pages to support your analysis.
  • What are ethical considerations of usability testing kids and teens that the Usability Testing Kids and Teens page addresses? Please use specific examples to support your analysis.
  • Consider the visible structure and layout of the content in the Usability Testing with Kids and Teens page. How is the information on the Usability Testing with Kids and Teens displayed in a user centered way? How is visible structure created on this page? How are colors, visuals, and white space used within the page to facilitate ease of reading? Be descriptive and use specific examples.

Discussion boards are always graded out of 10 points possible:

  • 6 points= incomplete, off topic, ungrammatical, inaccurate
  • 7 points = satisfactory completion (done according to instructions and on-topic, but may have errors, lack depth or examples, etc.)
  • 8.5 points=complete and shows extra effort
  • 10 = professional quality (complete, well-organized, formatted effectively, goes beyond minimum word count in a meaningful way, error-free, etc.).

Differentiated Assessment

Over the past four weeks you’ve had the opportunity to create a classroom environment that supports the foundations of differentiated instruction (DI), brainstorm differentiated strategies that align with the Common Core State Standards, and create the foundation for a unit plan based that incorporates instructional technology while adhering to UDL and DI principles.

This week, you will use what you’ve learned to create a summative assessment for the unit plan you created using one of the strategies from your PLC blog, and with the classroom environment you’ve outlined in Week Two.

This summative assessment must:

  1. Identify the Common Core State Standard being assessed for mastery (it can be the same one you used in Week Four’s assignment).

  2. Identify a unit goal that aligns with the Common Core State Standard.

For example: The students will (Measurable Verb) by (A specific outcome with a specific tool) with ___% accuracy.

You will also address:

  • Measurable mastery – Describe how mastery can be measured. (e.g., classify, discriminate, create, construct, defend, predict, evaluate, etc.). Be sure to avoid subjective words such as know, understand, learn, or appreciate.
  • A specific outcome – Explain what students will do to demonstrate mastery. (e.g., skill or knowledge that has been gained as a result of this unit).
  • Measurable progress – Identify the tool that will be used to measure mastery. (e.g., project, journal, test, etc.).
  • Proficiency Level – Determine the acceptable level of achievement to demonstrate mastery.

  1. Create three formative assessments using the three day lesson plan outline from the unit plan. Be sure that each formative assessment addresses:
    • a unique, differentiated teaching strategy for each day’s lesson,
    • multiple intelligences,
    • student’s different learning styles, and
    • how the assessment results will be used to drive instruction.

  2. Create a summative assessment that appraises mastery of the Common Core State Standard and the Unit Objective. Be sure to use the summative assessment outline plan from the unit plan. The summative assessment must include:
    • Directions to complete the assessment written using vocabulary and terms geared towards your identified student population.
    • A rubric that clearly details how each part of the assignment will be graded.
    • Provisions for addressing multiple intelligences and various learning styles.

The assignment should be a minimum of five pages in length, not including the title and reference pages, and must include reference to the course text and one additional resource (scholarly article or online resource). The assignment must be cited in proper APA format. A title and reference page must be included.

Select two (2) editorials / essays / columns (by staff or freelance writers) on a current issue of public policy from two (2) different publications (large metropolitan or national newspaper such as Washington Post or the New York Times or national magazines such as Newsweek, Time, and The New Republic.) 1.Apply the procedures for argumentation analysis (located in Chapter 8) to display contending positions and underlying assumptions for the content of Review Question 8. 2.Rate the assumptions and plot them according to their plausibility and importance. (Refer to Figure 3.16, “Distribution of warrant by plausibility and importance.”) 3.Determine which arguments are the most plausible. Provide a rationale for your views.  (Note: Refer to Demonstration Exercise 1 located at the end of Chapter 3 for criteria 4-6. Examine Box 3.0 – Conducting a Stakeholder Analysis. Choose one of the following policy issues in the U.S. gun control, illegal drugs, medical insurance fraud, and environmental protection of waterways, job creation, affordable health care, or Medicare.) 4.Apply the procedures for stakeholder analysis presented in Box 3.0 “Conducting a Stakeholder Analysis” to generate a list of at least five to ten (5-10) stakeholders who affect or are affected by problems in the issue area chosen for analysis. (Note: Refer to page 111 of the textbook for a step-by-step process on stakeholder analysis.) 5.After creating a cumulative frequency distribution from the list, discuss new ideas generated by each stakeholder. (Note: The ideas may be objectives, alternatives, outcomes causes, etc.; ideas should not be duplicates.) 6.Write an analysis of the results of the frequency distribution that answers the following questions: (a) Does the line graph flatten out? (b) If so, after how many stakeholders? (c) What conclusions can be drawn about the policy problems in the issue area? (Note: Compare your work with Case Study 3.1 at the end of the chapter.) 7.Include at least two (2) peer-reviewed references (no more than five [5] years old) from material outside the textbook to support your views. Note: Appropriate peer-reviewed references include scholarly articles and governmental Websites. Do not use open source Websites such as Wikipedia, Sparknotes.com, Ask.com, and similar Websites are not acceptable resources.  Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements: •Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. •Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.  The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are: •Examine the nature, characteristics, models, and / or methods pertinent to the structuring of policy problems. •Use technology and information resources to research issues in policy analysis and program evaluation. •Write clearly and concisely about policy analysis and program evaluation using proper writing mechanics.

Critique the communication tactics chosen for the project.  B. Propose communication strategies that would have been more appropriate for the project, providing reasoning for your proposal.

IX. Resource Management A. Describe the resource conflict within the project and how it was handled.  B. Recommend best practices in resource management that could have been used in this project, including those related to staffing needs and ways to avoid resource conflict.

Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Your paper should be a 4- to 5-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and at least three sources cited in APA format.

    Competency

Assess current legal and ethical principles and the application of such principles in healthcare practice.

    Instructions

You have recently been promoted to Health Services Manager at Three Mountains Regional Hospital, a small hospital located in a mid-size city in the Midwest. Three Mountains is a general medical and surgical facility with 400 beds. Last year there were approximately 62,000 emergency visits and 15,000 admissions. More than 6,000 outpatient and 10,000 inpatient surgeries were performed.

Three Mountains was recently in the news after employee emails were published in which patients were discussed in very negative terms, although patient names were not used. The employees that sent these emails were fired. The CEO and the Board of Directors has tasked you with developing an intake packet for new patients that will reestablish patient trust in the facility, employees, and staff. The patient packet will address new patient concerns by including information about HIPAA, informed consent, a confidential health history report, and a living will. The new packet will also include the values of the organization and a code of ethics.

Your intake packet will start with the Hospital's Code of Ethics that includes at least 10 ethical points. The code of ethics should include (at a minimum):

    • 1)Patient relations
    •  2)Physician activities
    •  3) Billing for services
    •  4) Political activities
    •  5) Conflict of interest
    •  6) Communication, including social media)
    •   7) Privacy

The Code of Ethics should be submitted in bullet format in a Word document with an introduction. APA formatting for the ethical points and proper grammar is required.

Upon completion of your code of ethics, please prepare a PowerPoint presentation (or other shareable Webware/software you prefer) with narration in which you explain each ethical point and its relevance in the healthcare industry with examples to the CEO, so that she can answer questions from the Board.

    1. The PowerPoint should have a minimum of 5 slides and a maximum of 12.
    2. Describe each ethical point in the Code of Ethics.
    3. Use the notes area on each slide as needed to expand on the key points.
    4. You may use a free screen capture site such as Screencast-O-Matic to record a video of your presentation. Screencast-O-Matic is a site and program that can perform screen desk and audio capture up to 15 minutes for free, and can be utilized on a Windows or Mac computer. (Note: You can use another, similar program if you prefer. Screencast-O-Matic is only a suggestion). Make sure that both your voice and the PowerPoint slides are captured on the video.

Your audio presentation should include an introduction, a concise discussion of each slide, and a conclusion. The presentation should demonstrate your overall knowledge of the content, pronunciation of words, organization, proper recording, professionalism, and clarity.

Your presentation should be 10 minutes or less. Be sure to include the following:

    • Include a link to the location of your live video on the last slide of your PowerPoint presentation.
    • Make sure to use audience specific language and tone in your PowerPoint. Remember, you would be presenting this to the CEO of your facility.

Save both your Word document and PowerPoint presentation to a folder on your computer. Then zip or compress your folder. This resourcefrom the Library and Learning Services offers help with zipping your folder. Upload the zipped folder to the assignment drop box.

    Personal Commitment

    Part 1

After reading Chapter 2 in the textbook and the lecture for this topic, write a two- to three-sentence answer to each of the six questions that form the basic components or personal commitments for your worldview. Answer the questions about your own beliefs in your own words, not what you think the Christian worldview believes. Keep this worksheet intact and only add your answers under each question.

    1. What is your belief about ultimate reality?

    2. What is your belief about the nature of the universe?

    3. What is your belief about human nature and the afterlife?

    I believe in afterlife

    4.  What is your belief about knowledge?

    5. What is your basis of ethics?

    6. What is your purpose?

    Part 2

Answer the following two questions with a 250-550-word response for each.

    1. Your answers to the questions in Part 1 form the basis of your worldview. Now that you have articulated your worldview, evaluate it according to the practical test described in Chapter 2 of the textbook and the lecture. Can you live your worldview out in the world as we know it? Why or why not?

    2. Reflect on your current understanding of the Christian faith. In other words, what is the essence of the Christian worldview? How does one become a Christian?
