Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the Splett, Fowler, Weist, McDaniel, & Dvorsky (2013), Stinnett, Bui, & Capaccioli, (2013), and  Kosher, Jiang, Ben-Arieh, & Huebner, (2014) articles,  and review Chapters 10 through 13 in your textbook.

For this discussion, you will be taking on the role of the school psychologist in a public middle school. In this role, you will facilitate the evaluation of a student based on psychoeducational personality assessments, mental status exam, and observations of the student to make recommendations to the education team consisting of yourself, school counselors, and teachers who work with the student. Carefully review the PSY615: Week Three School Psychologist-Based Personality and Behavior Assessment Scenario  (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

In your initial post:

  • Examine the personality assessment instrument used in the scenario and research a peer-reviewed article in the Ashford University Library on this personality assessment.
  • Using the required articles as well as your researched article to support your statements, describe the standard use of this personality assessment.
  • Based on the scenario, evaluate the reliability, validity, and cultural considerations inherent to the personality assessment used and comment on the relevance of these elements within the scenario.
  • Analyze and describe some of the potential ethical issues which might arise from the use of this personality assessment in the given scenario.
  • Provide information from your research regarding the use of the personality measure, and assess the value of other possible instruments that could be added to create a more complete assessment of the student in the scenario.

Guided Response:  Review several of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

  • Was your colleague’s researched article appropriate for the personality measure being considered?
  • Assess the personality instrument(s) suggested by your colleague. Would these measures provide reliable, valid, and culturally conscious results for the given scenario? Use your research to support your assertions.
  • What other measure(s) would you suggest your colleague use in this situation?

Chapter 12 in the course textbook discusses the impacts of caregivers and culture on gender development in early childhood. Based on the textbook chapter and one peer-reviewed journal article, write a paper discussing the gender differences in development from a psychoanalytic and systems perspective.

Your paper should account for or reply to each of the following:

  • Identify a gender development-related issue of critical importance to individuals and society.
  • Summarize a psychoanalytic and a systems perspective approach to, and related positions on, this issue.
  • Compare and contrast the two theories’ views on how gender development occurs, identifying and explaining implications for scholarly and professional practice.
  • Present and defend your position as to which theory is most relevant and valid with respect to your issue as you have explained it.

Your paper should be 1200-1600 words in length and support your thinking by citing and integrating at least two peer-reviewed journal articles and at least one real life example.

Prior to completing your initial post, read Chapter 5 and 8 of your course text and viewing Sleep Disorders. These required materials examine topics on neurotransmitter and receptor systems, anatomical structures, neurological functional pathways and their role in control of movement, consciousness and sleep, and how they correlate to selected related disorders. Choose from the following options for your initial post:

Option A: Evaluate one of the disorders of consciousness covered this week. Explain theories of etiology (causation), including the neuroanatomical structures, neurotransmitter/receptor systems, and the functional nervous system pathways involved. Include an analysis of the contribution of genetics, the environment, and lifestyle to the development and natural history of the condition. Provide information regarding diagnostic criteria and evaluate options for care interventions (both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic). Lastly, identify the neuroanatomical structures and any neurotransmitter/receptor systems involved.

You must use a minimum of one peer-reviewed source that was published within the last five years, documented in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.  Your post should be a minimum of 250 words. You may cite and reference your textbook, required reading and/or multimedia, but these will not fulfill the source requirement.

Option B: Evaluate one of the sleep disorders covered this week. Explain theories of etiology (causation), including the neuroanatomical structures, neurotransmitter/receptor systems, and the functional nervous system pathways involved.  Include an analysis of the contribution of genetics, environment, and lifestyle to the development and natural history of the condition. What information can you add regarding diagnostic criteria? Evaluate the options for care interventions (both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic).

Return to the case study that you considered in Assessment 1: Ethical Issue Analysis. Again, think of this assessment as a report you would make in a professional context.

  • Analyze how this problem may unfairly impact members of the populations described in the Introduction to Hays’s ADDRESSING Model document. Initially, you should brainstorm as many of such effects as possible. You may also develop fictional scenarios related to your problem where individuals behave inequitably. However, if you do so, take care that your scenarios are realistic.
  • Combine ideas that are similar when you have developed many entries.
  • Assess each of your remaining entries in terms of importance:
    • In what ways is it inequitable?
    • How great or severe is the effect?
    • How many people may be affected?
  • Take care that you do not allow your own biases to minimize your assessments.
  • Choose the entry that seems to be of greatest importance, on the basis of your evaluation.
  • Organize your notes and attach them to Assessment 2 as an appendix.

Instructions

Complete the following:

  • Create a title page: Write a brief title that concisely conveys the purpose of this report. It is suggested that you use the APA Paper Template, linked in the Resources under the Suggested Resources heading to format your paper according to the APA manual (sixth edition).
  • Write an introduction: For the introduction section of your paper, include the title at the top of the first page, and begin your introduction two spaces beneath your title. (In APA format, the word Introduction is not used as a heading.) Briefly summarize:
    • The case you have chosen.
    • How theories and research, in general terms, explain why the issue may have developed.
    • How the case relates to culture-related attitudes that may affect future professional behavior.
  • Create a heading titled Cultural Issue: Describe how the circumstances in the case study you chose unfairly impact members of one or more of the populations described in the Introduction to Hays’s ADDRESSING Model document.
  • Create a heading titled Theoretical Explanations: Apply two or more psychological theories to explain how this culture-related issue may have developed.
  • Create a heading titled Professional Behaviors: Analyze how attitudes related to culture, ethnicity, and diversity may have adversely affected professional behaviors within the case study scenario.
  • Create a heading titled Proposed Cultural Guidelines and Competencies:
    • Evaluate what cultural competencies a psychologist may use to help resolve this culture-related issue.
    • Propose general guidelines to improve or resolve this cultural issue, and help prevent its reoccurrence.
    • Describe the competencies necessary for working in a culturally diverse environment.
    • Integrate psychological principles with your personal values and goals to formulate guidelines for your personal and professional behavior with regard to culture, ethnicity, and diversity.
  • Create a heading titled Conclusion:
    • Reflect upon and assess how your own attitudes associated with culture, ethnicity, and diversity may affect your future professional behaviors.
    • Explain how the guidelines you developed will help you.
    • Discuss some steps you could take to further your own growth in cultural competencies.

Refer to the Cultural Competency Scoring Guide to ensure that you meet the criteria for this assessment.

Case Study to write about:

Maria, a 70-year-old Hispanic woman, lives with her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter in a spacious home on the lake. She enjoys reading on the patio, walking along the river’s edge, and taking her granddaughter to the park. She is fluent in Spanish, yet understands and speaks a little English.

Angel, Maria’s daughter, has noticed some behavioral changes in her mom that are troublesome. Her mom fell while walking to the car before they left for the restaurant and she had fallen the week before when walking into living room. Sara, Maria’s granddaughter, told her mom that she had to hold Grandma’s hand and bring her home from the park because she forgot how to get home.

Angel called the doctor and scheduled an appointment for her mom. Once Maria learned her daughter was planning to take her to the doctor Friday, she was very upset because she hadn’t been consulted first. Also, Maria didn’t have any bothersome symptoms and decided there was no reason a doctor needed to see her. All she needed was more sleep.

Maria and Angel arrived at the doctor’s office early Friday morning. The nurse brought them back to the examination room upon arrival as they were the first appointment of the day. Displeased, Maria allowed the nurse to take her weight, pulse, and blood pressure. Once the nurse was finished, she left the room and the doctor came in. While asking Maria some questions, the doctor spoke slowly and loudly as if she couldn’t hear. After the doctor learned that Maria’s understanding and speaking of English was minimal, he talked to Angel the entire time and then ordered additional tests without Maria’s consent. Maria was furious and wanted to go home.

Consider the individual, family, cultural beliefs and expectations, and ethical issues the individuals must think about as they interact with each other.

Create an 8–10 slide informative presentation on the following issues related to civil commitment of mentally ill individuals:

  • Identify the difficulties in apprehending and treating mentally ill offenders in a state of your choice. Provide a summary of the insanity statutes in a state of your choice. Be sure to include how often the statutes are used in court proceedings, some major criticisms, and the success rate.

  • Describe the process that a psychologist would use to provide an expert opinion for insanity cases. Should a psychologist be allowed to give expert opinion on sanity? Why or why not? What are some ethical issues that can be raised?

  • What are some common psychological treatment options for offenders that are incarcerated? What are some of the roadblocks to providing this treatment?

Be sure to support your answers with material from the Reading and outside research (at least two outside sources from scholarly journal articles, Internet sources, the textbook articles from the Kaplan Online Library, and other course material.) Also discuss how you evaluated the credibility of the resources used.

The presentation should contain a title slide and a slide of references in APA style. All internal citation of outside sources plus the listing of all references should also adhere to APA style.

Assignment 2: Project Paper – Comparative Essay

Due Week 8 and worth 200 points

This “Assignment 2” writing assignment is a comparative essay focused on topics encountered in our HUM 111 class. The project will be based on research but will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities as an organized, innovative, and critical thinker. If approached properly, it should also be fun!

Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that follows instructions and covers each part of the topic. (The title page and References list do not get included in this word count).

Note: Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 5.

For the topic you choose:

  1. Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper).
  2. This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don’t do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B–that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts.
  3. Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons.
  4. Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic.
  5. Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair!
  6. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text. Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.

Topic Choices – Choose just one (1) of the topics below:

  • Qualities of the Hero: Comparing Gilgamesh and Odysseus. Write an essay comparing these two (2) heroic figures from ancient epics of different cultures, especially focusing your analysis on the sources about their encounters with monsters: Gilgamesh encounters the monster guarding the forest, Humbaba, in Tablets 3-5 of the Epic of Gilgamesh(see http://www.ancienttexts.org/library/mesopotamian/gilgamesh/; scroll down to the Tablet links; think of “Tablet” numbers like chapter numbers).” Odysseus encounters Polyphemus the Cyclops in Book 9 of The Odyssey(see http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerOdyssey9.html; from line 105 to the end). Your paper should:

a) Compare Gilgamesh and Odysseus as to their heroic qualities, noting similarities and differences, using specific examples from the epics.

b) Summarize what this indicates about differences between ancient Mesopotamian and Greek cultures in their ideals and expectations.

c) From this comparison, suggest ways that current cultural ideals and expectations shape modern notions about role models and heroes.

  • Confucius and Aristotle on Virtue. Write an essay comparing these two (2) ancient thinkers on the concept of virtue or good ethical character and conduct. Stay focused on the issue; keep any biographical or other information short or limited. As much as possible, analyze their writings (in translation, of course), using Confucius’ Analects (at http://classics.mit.edu/Confucius/analects.html ) and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (at http://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/nicomachaen.html ). Your paper should:

a) Compare the teachings of Confucius and Aristotle on what constitutes virtue or good ethical character and conduct, noting similarities and differences in specific ideas or emphasis.

b) Consider what your findings suggest about differences between ancient Chinese and ancient Greek culture.

c) From this comparison, suggest ideas of virtue that can apply to ethics in a modern setting, such as a diverse workplace.

  • Comparing Sculptures of Ancient India and Greece. Write an essay comparing the way gods and humans were depicted in sculpture in ancient India and Greece, and identify the cultural values and ideals that these art works reflect in each case. Your paper should:

a) Using specific examples, compare the way gods and people were depicted in the sculptures of ancient India and Greece, noting similarities and differences.

b) Identify the cultural values and ideals that these art works reflect for each society.

c) From this comparison, suggest a modern situation of artistic expression and the ways it reflects or counters prevailing cultural values.

  • Comparing Ancient Skeptics. Write an essay comparing Lucretius and Wang Chong (=Wang Ch’ung), skeptical philosophers of ancient Rome and China. They were skeptical about popular religious and spiritual beliefs and widely-held superstitions. Lucretius was an Epicurean philosopher of Roman culture (Chapter 6). Wang Ch’ung was a thinker in ancient Chinese culture (Chapter 7). Focus your comparison on their writings as found at http://www.humanistictexts.org/lucretius.htmand http://www.humanistictexts.org/wangchung.htm#On Not Flying to Heaven. Your paper should:

a) Using examples from their writings, compare these two (2) thinkers on their views about specific subjects and on their approach in explaining and expressing their skepticism.

b) From this comparison, identify popular beliefs in each culture that seem similar and those that seem different.

c) From this comparison, suggest any modern situation in which materialist skeptics confront spiritual and religious beliefs, and comment on the considerations of free expression and cultural respect.

  • Comparing Ancient Male Rulers. Take any two (2) of these rulers and write an essay comparing them: Ramses II, Shihuangdi, Constantine, Ashoka, Pericles, or Charlemagne. Select rulers from different cultures. You may also propose (for approval or not) a ruler not listed. Avoid lengthy quoting or lengthy close paraphrasing from biographical sources. Make it YOUR comparative analysis. Your paper should:

a) Compare the two (2) rulers in terms of their situation and methods of rule and their apparent ideals and practices, noting similarities and differences. Use specific examples.

b) Consider what your study suggests about the cultures over which they ruled, identifying any similarities and differences between the cultures.

c) From this comparison, suggest lessons about different types of effective leadership in the world of modern business and / or modern politics.

  • Comparing Ancient Female Rulers. Compare the Tang Empress Wu Zetian (also known as Empress Wu or as Wu Zhao; ruled China around 690-705 AD) with either the Pharaoh Cleopatra (ruled Egypt around 51-31 BC) or the Pharaoh Hatshepsut (ruled Egypt around 1478-1458 BC). You may also propose (for approval or not) a female ruler not listed. Avoid lengthy quoting or lengthy close paraphrasing from biographical sources. Make it YOUR comparative analysis. Your paper should:

a) Compare the two (2) rulers in terms of their situation and ascent to power, their methods of rule, and their achievements and resourcefulness, noting similarities and differences. Use specific examples.

b) Consider what your study suggests about the cultures over which they ruled, identifying any similarities and differences between the cultures.

c) From this comparison, suggest lessons about different types of effective leadership by a female in the world of modern business and / or modern politics.

  • Other topic choice using a comparative approach (proposed by student or instructor) and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

The Project Paper will be graded on:

  1. The level to which the instructions were followed for the paper generally and for the specific topic.
  2. The establishment of a clear thesis about your topic.
  3. The adequacy and relevance of information, examples, and details which support the general thesis.
  4. Covering each part of the topic as instructed, including the comparisons, the consideration of ancient cultural differences, and the reflection on lessons for modern society or the modern workplace.
  5. The quality of your research and your persuasiveness using critical reasoning.
  6. The use and acknowledgement of a minimum of three (3) required references (the class textbook plus at least two (2) other quality academic sources) documented using the APA style –including both the use of a proper References list and the use of proper in-text citations.
  7. Adherence to standard rules of grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, and mechanics, and general clarity of presentation.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. Both in-text citations and a References list are required. Citations and references must follow APA style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions specific to the selected topic. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for guidance).
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length. For our purposes, you may omit any abstract page.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
