Hello,

Enclosed is my Draft for my thesis.

I have following comments from my professor:

Your problem statement is still vague and generic. There is a lack of focus. Why is this study necessary? Where are the specific and detailed facts to support this study needs to take place? What does “healthy and happy employees” have to do with ergonomics? Please review the format for the content of chapter 1 and the APA Handbook for reference page format. You discuss PDCA, but there is no reference to Deming of Shewahrt. What is the macro impact on the industry and/or organization? How do you plan to apply the specific tools of quality for your analysis, if you do not clearly define the elements/conditions, by using facts, impacted by ergonomics?

Kindly edit this draft based on my professor’s comments

Movie Analysis, 100 points

This assignment is intended to test your knowledge and application of sociological concepts learned throughout this course. Using a film as an example of a social situation, you will explain terms and concepts that you have learned.

Format:

– 3-4 pages (not including title page or references)

– Title page

– References page (use and cite books and film)

– 12 pt font, double spaced, academically acceptable formula (MLA or APA—stay consistent)

– Two sections (see MLA or APA guidelines for section formatting): Film Summary and Concept Application

Requirements:

1) Watch a film from Below

Inside Out

2) Write a summary of the film (about 1 page)

3) Analyze the film using your sociological imagination (about 3 pages). Identify and explain at least 15 of the terms from the list on the next page. In some cases, it may be necessary for you to define the term in your explanation. The course textbooks should be your only reference materials in these explanations. Make sure you cite the books and the film. (Hint: In the past, students have found it helpful to address these terms as they occur chronologically within the film. This prevents jumpiness in your analysis). The first time a term is used, it should be italicized, to better indicate you are moving to the explanation of a new idea.

Description

* Each writing assignment must set the font at 12, use Times New Roman, set Spacing at 0 pt (before and after), set Line Spacing at single, and set Alignment at left.

* Student must provide a minimum of 600 words to respond to EACH question in the assignment. SO A TOTAL OF 2400 WORDS.

* In addition to use information from the textbook, student is encouraged to provide supplemental information (online sources, journal articles, or other books) to respond to the subject matters in the questions.

Textbook: Criminal Justice Organizations: Administration and Management (Authors: Stojkovic, Kalinich, and Klofas)

Question #1: Read Chapter 12 – Decision Making, then discuss the following questions:

What are some of the biases that would underlie a police officerвЂTMs discretionary decision whether or not to make an arrest? What biases or beliefs do you possess that would impact your decision to make an arrest or to release the offender?

Design a process for determining, on a case-by-case, which juveniles should be diverted from court processing. Is this a predictive decision? What is being predicted? How should the decision process be structured? Who should make the decisions? What kinds of information should be used? How should it be presented? How would you evaluate the decisions?

Question #2: Read Chapter 13 – Organizational Effectiveness, then discuss the following questions:

Describe the goals of a local police department. How do official and operative goals compare? What variables would you suggest using to measure achievement of those goals? Is the meaning of variables clear?

Consider the effectiveness of a drug court using a variety of theoretical perspectives. Would you reach similar conclusions using a goal, strategic, constituency, and system resource model of effectiveness? Under what circumstances might the theories lead to different conclusions about the courtвЂTMs effectiveness?

Develop a plan for a multi-goal/multi-measure evaluation of a prisoner reentry program. What kinds of structure, process, and outcome variables would you measure? How would you use the evaluation procedure to provide information for the ongoing assessment and improvement of the program?

Question #3: Read Chapter 14 – Change and Innovation, then discuss the following questions:

A growing number of entry-level criminal justice practitioners have college degrees. Will the advanced education of these practitioners create greater or less resistance to change from within criminal justice organizations?

To what extent does the classic paramilitary structure of police and corrections organizations create a climate that is not conductive to change?

Question #4: Read Chapter 15 – Research in Criminal Justice Organizations, then discuss the following questions:

How do you think research has influenced the criminal justice system since the PresidentвЂTMs Commission in 1967? What examples can you give of research findings that have had a direct or indirect bearing on practice in the field?

Critique the major sources of data about crime in the United States. What are their strengths and weaknesses? How should they be used in research, and how should that research influence management and policy? What cautions would you suggest?

Please read the instructions carefully.

Introduction, body, and Conclusion. Each skull in a separate paragraph.

One source is allowed.

1-Describe the six skulls found in the case using terminology you have learned from the class; name at least three morphological characteristics for each cranium that suggest which taxon each specimen belongs to. Each skull should have at least a one-paragraph (5-6 sentences) description. Your classification should include both genus and species names.

  1. Each characteristic should be discussed in terms of evolutionary trends (i.e. does a given trait increase or decrease in size through time in the hominin lineage).

  1. Place the fossils in an evolutionary order from oldest to youngest, giving appropriate time ranges for each species. In other words, how do these various fossils relate to each other? Were they coexisting with others? Found in the same areas? Organization of this paper is up to you. You may want to describe the fossils in chronological order, or by their number in the display case.

  1. Include a conclusion paragraph discussing the chronological order to which each fossil belongs. In addition, create a family tree for the hominins in the display case. Place them in the order that you think they occurred in and how they relate to each other.

Description

Advice before writing your first draft:

The challenge of this assignment is to identify the social resources that have enhanced individual opportunities to create an economically secure and satisfying life. In order to provide you with a preliminary “thought experiment,вЂк I have given you statistical information on Piedmont, CA and the West Oakland neighborhood of Oakland, CA (zip code 94607) in the Final_Essay_Data worksheet. These two communities are both located in the East Bay—in fact, they are about 3 miles apart—but present stark differences in the quality of life within each community. Using your sociological imagination, what can you tell about the quality of life looking at the statistical data of these two communities? How do either community differ from the average Californian and American (US) community? How would residence in each community affect a typical childвЂTMs family circumstances and life chances? What larger social and economic factors might give insight into why these communities are so different in what they can offer their children? Think about the contemporary impact of privileges and disadvantages created in the past and note how these different community histories can perpetuate privilege or disadvantage through the resources (or lack thereof) provided to its residents. You do not need to write up this comparative analysis, but you might use these contrasts to generate ideas before starting work on your own socio-biography on social location and life chances.

Once you have thought about the sharp contrasts in the class and race profiles of Piedmont and West Oakland, how would your own experiences growing up compare to life in each of these cities? Check out the article “An Atlas of Upward Mobility Shows Paths Out of PovertyвЂк included in the Final Project Model. In the section entitled “The Best and Worst Places to Grow Up,вЂк You can type in your own zip code and receive information on general chances of upward mobility in your home community. Most of you have life experiences that fall in between those of the typical West Oakland or Piedmont resident, so you will need to consider a more complex interplay of resources and opportunities to explain the trajectory of your personal life.

This would be a good time to read/reread the literature on family life and structural opportunities. The work by Stephanie Coontz will be particularly useful to this essay (i.e., “What We Really Miss About the 1950sвЂк, “We Always Stood On Our Own Two FeetвЂк and “Wilding Boys, Pregnant Girls, Crack Babies and the Underclass: the myth of Black family collapseвЂк). You might also take a look at the readings included at the end of your course reader—the first chapter of Karen BrodkinвЂTMs How Jews Became White Folks and the Introduction and ch. 1 of Melvin Oliver and Thomas ShapiroвЂTMs book Black Wealth/White Wealth. These essays explicitly address how structural opportunities affect family formation and economic mobility. By the time you turn in your final draft, you should also be very familiar with the articles on families and race/ethnicity included in the course reader, (e.g., see especially articles by Taylor, Baca Zinn & Wells, Ishii-Kuntz, Woo, Nakano Glenn, and Collins). You should gather ideas from these readings to help you understand why growing up some communities have more opportunities and resources than others, based in large part on the prevalent race and class of the community (gender also plays a role in the distribution of economic and social resources).

Advice on writing the first draft (or shorter outline):

After thinking about the intersection of larger community resources and personal life chances, try to concretely explain how growing up in your particular social location, (i.e., your race, class, and the physical location of your home) affected your life chances. What opportunities were given to you? What opportunities were obtained through struggles/extraordinary efforts on you or your familyвЂTMs part? In addition to ideas from the course readings, use data from the data sheets as well as your answers to the questions in Section II to describe factors that have been important in creating your life chances. Make sure you consider the role of social policies in your answer. As your final essay should make considerable use of the course readings, try to create an overarching argument that explains the sociological forces that have shaped your life chances. To repeat, you will not be graded on your rough draft but readers will write comments that will help you shape and polish your final essay. Check out the essay criteria posted in the Final Project module as a separate handout. Much of this essay is a reflection in your own words upon your own experiences, but papers are awarded higher grades if they do two things: 1) present ideas that are organized around a central argument and 2) show familiarity with the course readings and content. In general, good essays have a clear, overarching argument that is developed and substantiated in the body of the paper. Sub-themes need to be related in some way to the main argument and you need to make the connections between sub-themes clear. By the conclusion, the reader should have a new perspective on the topic at hand.

Description

To complete this assignment, it is expected that you will use elements of ethnographic research to explain how the members of this community approached their rhetorical task. Your ethnographic research will help you better understand the discourse community, in which these authors are composing, and will help you understand how these writers are approaching their rhetorical task (s). In order for this assignment to be successful, I would suggest that you work with a discourse community that you are already familiar with or one that you have easy access to. Your case study should work to discuss the connections between the choices these writers made with the expectations and habits of the broader discourse community.

When you are working on this project, use the following questions to guide your research and your writing:

  1. Who is doing the communicating in this community? That is, who are the authors that are writing?

  1. What kinds of texts (Genres) are they using to achieve their rhetorical goals?

  1. How do they go about composing those texts?

  1. When you complete this kind of work or similar work, how would you explain it to people outside of that community?

Your goal for this project will be to write a “case study” of your time observing and interacting with people in a particular discourse community. We will discuss the case study genre more specifically as we continue to work on this project.

Description
write 300-500 words describing the case study, including:
– What were the patient’s symptoms?
– What areas of the brain could be responsible for causing the symptoms (potentially in addition to what Dr. Sacks or Dr. Ramachandran concluded)?
– Was the patient treatable? How so?
• If not, how might the patient compensate/overcome their “obstacles”
– How common do you think the patient’s condition is? What makes the case study unique, especially compared with other patients with the same disease.

• Scientific Writing
– There are lots of science-related jobs.
• Researcher: Becoming a professor or researcher at a pharmaceutical company
– Requires you to write-up very technical journal articles, like you do in your labs!
• Journalist: Writing for a newspaper, blogs, or mainstream magazines like Discover, Popular Science, & Scientific American.
– Requires you to assume that your reader has no (or little) scientific background.
• Technical: People who evaluate inventions, venture capitalists, scientific financial advisors, consultants, patent agents.
– Requires very succinct and to-the-point writing, putting things in a very “translational” context.
For this assignment, write like a “journalist”

Please double-space your submission and use a font that is not super crazy annoying (choose Times new roman or arial are good choices. For example, if your font is like this, Neuroscience is fun!, or like this: Neuroanatomy is a breeze, I will get a headache. Choose 12 pt fonts, but what matters most is the 300-500 word requirement).

• Artwork
– Help people understand your write-up
– Make people want to learn more about the condition
– Influence people to read the book & learn about neuroscience
– Examples:
• Draw a picture of the brain, pointing out regions or circuits that the patient’s condition affected
• Make a brief YouTube video or drawing describing some of the behavioral tests used
• Are you a photographer? Take an interesting photo associated with the patient’s profession.
• Important: Be appropriate and respectful!
