Transcultural Perspectives in Mental Health Nursing

 

Read chapter 10 of the class textbook and review the attached PowerPoint presentation.  Once done, develop and post an analysis of the following cases;

 

1. Stephane, a 15-year-old Haitian refugee who is living at a center for children of refugees has a severe cough and fever. She is curled up in a corner of the community room wrapped in a towel. She looks like she has been crying.

List three priorities for the nurse regarding the cultural values, beliefs, and possible practices that Stephane may have.

 

2. Jacob is an 87-year-old with bipolar I disorder. He came to the United States from Poland in 1937. He was institutionalized for 2 years in a large mental health facility; currently, he lives in a community mental health center (transitional housing).

• Explain where you found these resources on the site. (Does the state have an easy to find “Disaster Assistance for Victims” tab on the front page of the site or did you have to do some research to locate the services?)
• Explain the resources that are available (victim crisis hotline, monthly trauma meeting, mental health literature to review, etc.) and how a victim would utilize these services. (Does the victim contact their state Representative, contact the Governor’s office, contact a specific state agency, etc.?)
• Explain whether or not you think the resources offered by your state would actually be helpful to victims and why. If you cannot find any resources for victims of a terrorist attack or natural disaster on your state’s homepage, describe two services that address mental health, trauma, or coping you think would be beneficial to victims and why. Explain how you think victims should be able to utilize these services and where they should be advertised for maximum exposure.

Consider the following scenarios:

 

Scenario 1: One of the physicians on staff is telling you about a study that he is doing on his patients. He hopes to have the study published and to receive a grant to expand his research. He offers to hire you to help him with the data collection during your off hours. You accept and begin helping him. You start collecting data. When you access the file the next day, you realize that he has removed a number of patients from the study. You suspect that they were removed intentionally, but you cannot be sure. You put your suspicions aside and proceed with your work and add more patients to the database. A few days later, more patients have been removed from the database. When you do some investigation, you discover that the patients who were removed were sicker and/or had a poor outcome. This is a problem and may prevent the rewarding of the grant money to this project.

 

Scenario 2: You are traveling with your work laptop to a conference and leave it for five minutes at the airport terminal as you go to the bathroom. You asked your colleague to keep an eye on it, but when you return, your colleague has boarded the plane and taken your belongings. As you look through, you realize your laptop is missing. When you confront your colleague, she says it was just there a moment ago and she is certain she brought it on board with her. Your laptop contains secure information regarding your organization and has remote access to your clinical information system. The policy at your organization for a data breach is to call tech support immediately and report the breach. You think it may just be misplaced and begin looking.

 

Choose one of the scenarios above and answer the following:

• What challenges are present in the scenario, and what are some steps that can be taken to address them?
• What is the relationship between ethics and policy? Do they always match up with one another?
• If individual ethics do not align with organizational policy, what might be the end result?

Based on “Case Study: Fetal Abnormality” and other required topic study materials, write a 750-1,000-word reflection that answers the following questions:

 

1. What is the Christian view of the nature of human persons, and which theory of moral status is it compatible with? How is this related to the intrinsic human value and dignity?
2. Which theory or theories are being used by Jessica, Marco, Maria, and Dr. Wilson to determine the moral status of the fetus? What from the case study specifically leads you to believe that they hold the theory you selected?
3. How does the theory determine or influence each of their recommendations for action?
4. What theory do you agree with? Why? How would that theory determine or influence the recommendation for action?
