opic and Structure:

Character Evolution – Explain how a character from a novel, film, television show, or another medium of your choice evolves—either good or bad—from the beginning to the end of the story.

Your introduction will provide a brief synopsis of the story and then smoothly transition into the last sentence of your introduction—the thesis statement. Next, you will develop at least three body paragraphs, each dedicated to one example (such as a scene) in your chosen medium that serves as support for your thesis claim. Finally, you will compile a conclusion paragraph that synthesizes your findings.

Creating the thesis statement:

Is your argument focused and meaningful in a way that it also offers a clear-cut, but debatable point of view, which a reader might either agree or disagree with? Avoid claims that are too obvious to the readers—offer them a new idea! Remember, a thesis also serves as a map for your essay, providing a promise of subtopics you will discuss in your body paragraphs in the order in which they appear in your essay.

Sample thesis statement: In The Midnight’s Shadow, Charles Bellingham begins as a lonely, self-loathing candle maker, but after he meets Miss Charmaine, begins working for the king, and takes an understudy, he transforms into a confident man who sees the townspeople and the kingdom as a friendly and prosperous community.

Developing the body paragraphs:

The way you present your supporting evidence is just as important as the evidence itself. When you create a body paragraph with the goal of supporting a claim in your thesis, you want to include a balance of research and/or examples with original material. In other words, original material refers to discussions you develop that help explain the connection between your research and/or examples and your thesis claim. You don’t want to assume that your research and/or examples are enough to prove your thesis—you want to inform your reader how and why cited material serves the purpose you intend.

Therefore, begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that affirms your opinion. A topic sentence for the first body paragraph in a paper with the thesis from above might say, “Miss Charmaine, ever so charming in her ways, bumps into a scowling Mr. Bellingham, only to annoy him further, but as he slowly raises his gaze to evaluate the source of this unpleasantry, he is rather surprised to see a such a lovely creature affectionately maintaining his stare, eliciting an intrigue that serves as the first defining moment in Charles’ positive transformation.” Next, follow up the topic sentence with more about this scene that serves as the defining moment. Then, spend significanttime explaining how the events you just discussed prove your thesis. Finally, end the paragraph with a concluding sentence that synthesizes your efforts.

Compiling the conclusion:

Lastly, compile a conclusion paragraph that summarizes your findings in a new manner, using fresh language and perspective. Make sure to work in a restatement of your thesis statement (but not a repetitive version) as well as any other relevant ideas you present in the essay. You want your conclusion to read like new information but without actually presenting new arguments. In sum, synthesize instead of summarize.

Notes

·         When you refer to events in your chosen medium, use literary present.

Read the following two statements taken from a Forbes article in December 31, 2013.

Statement  1: “there is a certain crowd in Washington who, for the last few  decades, have said, let’s respond to this economic challenge with the  same old tune. The market will take care of everything, they tell us. If  we just cut more regulations and cut more taxes – especially for the  wealthy – our economy will grow stronger. Sure, they say, there will be  winners and losers. But if the winners do really well, then jobs and  prosperity will eventually trickle down to everybody else. And, they  argue, even if prosperity doesn’t trickle down, well, that’s the price  of liberty.”

Statement 2: “there is a certain crowd in Washington  who, for the last few decades, have said, let’s respond to this economic  challenge with the same old tune. The government will take care of  everything, they tell us. If we just pile on even more regulations and  raise taxes – especially on the wealthy – our economy will grow  stronger. Sure, they say, there will be winners and losers. But if the  losers are protected by more social programs and a higher minimum wage,  if there is more Quantitative Easing by the Fed., then jobs and  prosperity will eventually trickle up to everybody else. And, they  argue, even if prosperity doesn’t trickle up, well, that’s the price of a  social safety net.”

These statements are based upon the US  economy and different, well-known, economic governmental philosophies  implemented frequently. These are very BIG economic statements which  means these statements refer to many different aspects of macroeconomic  government policy. During this course, we have already discuss some some  portions of these theories and will eventually discuss other portions  of these theories.

1. Which philosophy do you agree with? Why?  Narrow down your thoughts to one aspect of these macroeconomic policies,  i.e taxes (more or less), government spending, government welfare  spending, monetary growth, effects of government regulation, etc.

2.  Find at least TWO ECONOMIC  journal articles that either agrees with or  disagrees with the philosophy that you have chosen in #1.

3. Find a popular press article that argues the OPPOSITE

3.  Summarize your journal article as it refutes your popular press  article. This summary should be in terminology that could be understood  by your fictional high school senior.

4. Your summary should be at least 500 words.

Your assignment MUST focus on economic issues.
Your assignment will be counted off one point for each minute that it is submitted late.
Assignments  that do not meet assigned word count, do not address economic issues,  or do not addres similarity issues via TurnItIn, will have grade  deductions accordingly.

Introduction

There are many subjects that spark vigorous debate and passionate following in American society. Abortion, capital punishment, and gun control have divided individuals and groups and caused dissent that often turns into inflammatory rhetoric. But what is about these topics that cause people to be so divided? Does the answer lie in rhetoric or in inquiry? Are the topics of capital punishment or gun control black and white?

Social Control

The U.S. criminal justice system has been forced to deal with increased demands for less governmental social control and an inability to continue to finance the punishments enacted over the last 40 years. The interesting criminal justice paradox is that conservatives who argue for less governmental oversight of the private sector seek greater levels of control for those who they deem have violated the social trust and committed any one of the eight index offenses. Liberals argue for the reverse. Perhaps no other issues strike more emotion than the implementation of the death penalty and gun control.

For this Discussion, you will examine the issues of both capital punishment and gun control in the United States. The Instructor will split the class into two groups.

Post by Day 3: Group A will debate capital punishment. Group B will debate gun control.

Group A: Explain whether the perception of the death penalty is changing. Support your argument.

Group B: Explain whether or not gun control is actually possible. Support your argument.

Respond by Day 5: You must engage in the online group discussion a minimum of three times, which includes a response to two of your colleagues.

Please keep the discussion civil!

Arguments should be based in factual research.

Topic: Nat turner’s rebellion

– Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant?

– Develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about?

– Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your

sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?

–  Describe at least two primary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: How do these sources relate to your secondary sources? What do they add to your understanding of the event? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event?

–  Create a thesis statement based on your research question. This will help you address these two critical elements later on: 1) Identify an audience that would be interested in your historical event and research question. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message? 2) Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand historical terminology and principles associated with your event, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?
