To understand behavior, sociologists look at their social location in society: their group memberships within categories like occupation, income, education, gender, age, race-ethnicity which influence their self-concept and behavior.

For this assignment, I’d like you to use elements of social location to explain voting patterns in the most recent Presidential election. In your analysis you should identify social location by referring to specific groups in society.

  • If you voted, how did your social location influence your choice? If you didn’t vote, how would your social location have influenced you to vote?
  • Now try to analyze elements of the social location of voters who cast their vote for a different candidate than the one you chose or would have chosen.
  • Can you link any of the issues that influenced voters to larger social structures? (See the NYT article linked in required reading for specific ideas.)

Finally, if you are able, please register to vote!

Organizational Ethics and Ethical Dilemmas

Human services professionals may occupy leadership roles (administration, research, management) or service roles, working directly with clients. The leadership responsibilities of a human services professional include the application of ethical standards in the primary role of administration, research, and management. In addition, one must understand and be able to apply ethical standards in the service role to effectively guide and support service personnel. The practice of ethics generally involves understanding standards set by the workplace and recognizing that what ought to be or might be the ethically appropriate decision or action is effectively carried out in either role.

Drawing on your readings, write a 1,500-word essay discussing an example of organizational ethics and two examples of ethical dilemmas that require intervention and resolution.

Instructions

Choose two ethical dilemmas to complete the following:

  • Discuss two ethical dilemmas (one supervisory dilemma and one service-delivery dilemma) and offer an effective resolution for each dilemma.
  • Analyze the differences and similarities between the ethical obligations of a leader in human services as compared with the obligations of service personnel.

Choose one cross-cultural dilemma to complete the following:

  • Describe a cross-cultural dilemma (an ethical conflict arising from a diverse social interaction) that requires understanding of non-Western cultural ethics.
  • Evaluate the most appropriate ethical practice for the cross-cultural dilemma.
  • Communicate information in a concise, balanced, and logically organized written way, using appropriate grammar, punctuation, and syntax, as expected of graduate-level composition, while applying current APA guidelines.

Review the Organizational Ethics and Ethical Dilemmas Scoring Guide to verify you have addressed all the assignment requirements.

Suppose you are the director of the food distribution program in a nonprofit organization. The nonprofit organization serves a rural Hmong community that is largely organized around the church. The church is not well funded, but the nonprofit organization receives funds from the state, allowing it ample staffing support.

Members of the community rely on the church pastor and believe that the church should be providing food support to members of the community who are unable to feed themselves, since there are very few jobs in the community that pay a living wage. The community is thankful for the food distribution program you direct, but they want the church to control distribution, especially of the foods they prefer. Your program relies on an outside charitable warehouse for foods that are generally available to commercial outlets, but mainly canned foods and packaged foods. The community wants fresh food and the pastor agrees they should have fresh foods, including greens and fresh meat.

You are responsible to the state for providing food to this impoverished rural community; however, the community does not want to rely on your organization, but the church instead. You must make an ethical and programmatic decision that satisfies both the community and its church, as well as the state authorities providing the money.

Explain your decision, based on ethical principles. Assess the ethical obligations you have to the state versus those obligations to the community.

Your initial post must:

  • Be at least 250 words in length.
  • Contain a minimum of two references with citations in APA style.
  • Follow APA style guidelines.

As a human services professional, you are obligated to respect the right of self-determination, and the principles of confidentiality and maintaining boundaries.

Consider the following case study: a client in the county halfway house for battered women had been seriously injured on three occasions as a result of confrontations with her husband. She was placed in the halfway house by court order and the husband was required to remain separated from his wife.

The supervisor was informed that the service provider working with the client had been asked repeatedly by the client to allow her husband to visit with her, since she “just knew she can make up and they will be okay.” The service provider was unsure and turned to a counselor for advice about what to do. The counselor said she felt compassion for the client and believed that she was ready to begin “working things out with her husband.”

Still unsure, the service provider decided to turn to the supervisor for guidance. The halfway house has an ethics code that emphasizes self-determination and confidentiality for the protection of the clients. The county laws strictly follow the court decisions.

Suppose you are the supervisor responsible for directing both the service provider and the counselor. Taking into account the halfway house ethics code, National Organization of Human Services’ “Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals,” and the county law, how will you decide? What is your decision in providing direction and guidance to the service provider? What is your responsibility toward the counselor?

It may be helpful to refer to the Organizational Ethics Concerning Mental Health media presentation in the Resources as you complete this discussion.

Your initial post must:

  • Be at least 250 words in length.
  • Contain a minimum of two references with citations in APA style.
  • Follow APA style guidelines.

In this module, you will be reading about plot and narrator in fiction, both of which are necessary for an effective narrator.  In “Sonny’s Blues,” Baldwin has two main characters:  Sonny and his brother.  They each choose very different lifestyles and have a very difficult time understanding each other’s choices.  Sonny’s brother often narrates with a sense of bafflement over Sonny’s love of music and drug addition–both part of the world that he inhabits.

After reading the story, reflect on an incident when you and a family member took a very different perspective.  Why did you “see” this event differently?  How was it resolved?

 Guidelines

Your initial response should be around 250 words. Your response to a classmates’ discussion should be around 100 words and add to the discussion (i.e. posing questions, reflecting on their response, etc.). All posts and responses should contain proper grammar, be free of spelling errors, be substantial, and reflect critical thinking.

Remember: Be supportive, considerate, and constructive when replying to your classmates.
