This week, you are asked to find two articles from sociology journals that used qualitative research methods. The articles should be from 2016-present (a recent article).

The best way to start your search is to visit the Sociological Abstracts database from the Auraria library home page: https://library.auraria.edu/databases/topic/sociology (Links to an external site.)

From this link, find Sociological Abstracts. Then follow these steps:

  1. Insert any keywords of interest to you, I put “undocumented students in college”
  2. Limit the search to peer-reviewed articles
  3. Publication date: Last 3 years
  4. Source Type: Scholarly Journals
  5. Document Type: Article

For the Assignment: Once you have found two articles, then answer the following questions. You can answer most of the questions by reading the abstracts of the journal articles you choose. But you may also need to skim the articles.

  1. What is the research question?
  2. What is the qualitative research method that the study author uses?

  • Examples of qualitative research methods include:
    • Interviews
    • Ethnography/Observations
    • Focus Groups
    • Survey
    • Content Analysis

  1. Describe the data the author collected i.e. how many participants, how long did they observe and who did they observe, how many focus groups, what documents did they analyze?
  2. What were the main findings of the study?
  3. Does the author discuss their relationship to the participants or the site of study?
  4. What limitations does the author identify?

Develop a planning strategy for your persuasive speech based on the following five criteria for an effective speech:

  1. need for credibility
  2. need for intellectual stimulation
  3. need for creativity
  4. need for relevance

Use these criteria to answer the following questions about your own speech:

  • How would you demonstrate that you are a credible speaker on this subject?
  • How would you keep the audience thinking and learning about your topic?
  • How would you make the speech creative?
  • How would you demonstrate that this topic is relevant to the audience’s needs and interests?

Be specific in your answers. For instance, don’t just say you are a credible speaker because you have done a lot of research. You need to give us what sources you are using and how you have determined they are credible. For creativity, don’t just say you will use a PowerPoint. You need to tell us what will be on each slide.

Before the end of the week, begin commenting on at least 2 of your peers’ responses. You can ask technical questions or respond generally to the overall experience. Be objective, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language, even in criticism, to work toward the goal of positive progress. Submit your responses to the appropriate topic in this

Crowdsourcing in the field of interface design takes tasks traditionally performed by specific individuals and spreads them out among a group of people or a community. These assignments are usually done through an open call. Crowdsourcing has become increasingly popular with the growth of Web 2.0 and online communities. Write a fifteen to eighteen (15-18) page paper in which you:

  1. Examine the invention and growth of crowdsourcing in the field of interface design.
  2. Describe the impact that crowdsourcing has had on the field of interface design.
  3. Analyze and discuss at least three (3) benefits of incorporating crowdsourcing in a design project.
  4. Analyze and discuss at least three (3) challenges of incorporating crowdsourcing in a design project.
  5. Propose a solution for generating interest in your design project from an online community.
  6. Suggest a solution for evaluating the skill set and quality of the code submitted by potentially unknown users.
  7. Describe how crowdsourcing may affect the budget and timeline of a design project.
  8. Assess crowdsourcing in regard to the legal, societal, and ethical issues it raises, and suggest methods to alleviate these concerns.
  9. Use at least five (5) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Compare and contrast the design and development processes in HCI.
  • Describe legal, societal, and ethical issues in HCI design.
  • Describe the inherent design issues across HCI environments.
  • Analyze and evaluate interface design models.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in human-computer interaction.
  • Write clearly and concisely about HCI topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

The history of correctional institutions is well documented. Correctional institutions (jails and prisons) house individuals who are awaiting trial and serving both short- and long-term sentences. Correctional officers are responsible for the monitoring, treatment, and supervision of individuals who have been found guilty by a court of law.
For this assignment, we will take you inside a look at the “Most Violent Prison 2016 – Part 1 – Maximum Security.”

  1. Describe the main methods Sergeant Baldwin and his staff use to maintain order and safety in the prison. Take a position on the effectiveness, risks, pros and cons, and ethics of these methods.
  2. Choose one (1) of the inmates profiled in this video–Terry Dibble, Simkayta Winfield, Jerico Jones, or Gregory Crowder–and discuss their situation. Explain how they ended up at Statefield, the main issues they described facing, and the methods they use to cope with their time in prison.
  3. Discuss the effect you feel the presence of the active armed guards has on the violence level and overall safety within this prison.
  4. Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville presented in this video and the effects connections and contact with outside visitors can have on the prisoners’ mental status.
  5. Identify at least two (2) issues that gay inmates here uniquely face. Identify at least one (1) method of protecting gay inmates against each of these identified issues.
  6. Take a position on how you believe conditions at Statefield could be improved. Include at least two (2) specific actions that could be taken to improve conditions (e.g., security and safety, abuse and use of force, isolation, poor food quality, etc.). Provide a rationale for your position.
  7. The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Summarize the current ethical issues faced by criminal justice professionals and the future of the criminal justice system.
  • Outline the major characteristics and purposes of prisons, including prisoners’ rights and prison society.
  • Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using this rubric.

Set up: For this assignment, I want you to “take a trip” to a professional setting in order to observe and consider the behavioral norms of people in it and the values they reflect. It’s important to be aware of (and probably adapt to) the behavioral norms of one’s workplace to better serve your employer, clients, and co-workers. Just like how the personalities of the companies will differ, the behavioral norms (value systems, expected behavior, vocabulary) will also differ.

Your task:

This assignment will require you to do some firsthand research and observe (or take a trip to) a workplace. To study the behavioral norms of a workplace and make inferences about the behavioral norms of this setting. You must list the specific workplace you’re observing.

I’d like you to detail the facts of the behavioral norms of this setting. Some things you can look for:

Vocabulary – is there a set of vocabulary one would have to know to function in this setting.

Behaviors – how should people in this setting conduct themselves? What is expected of those engaging in this setting? Is it an easygoing environment? Is it a bit more conservative? What’s the general mode like?

Dress code – what kind of uniform (if any) would one need, in order to navigate this environment? Is there a formal dress-code upheld? Is it a more casual atmosphere where formal dress would be laughed at?

Feel free to list any other observations you make about what will comprise the “identity kit” that’s needed to exist in this setting.

For every observation, try and think about what values the observation reflects? What does this community value? How do things like the dress-code, the vocabulary, the expected behavior reflect these values?

With regards to the last bullet point, when you make inference into what values/goals the observations represent, it may be helpful to think about what the discourse values as a whole are. For example, if we think about a business like the military, it’s likely accurate to say the business values discipline, uniformity, order, hierarchy, etc.

Formatting: This report should be single spaced, include paragraph breaks between paragraphs, make effective use of the formatting tools available to you (bold, italics, headings, etc.), and be organized in a way that is easy to read and understand.

The biggest mistake you can make here is to write it in narrative or chronological style. Narrative style usually means you’re using a lot of “I” statements (e.g. I arrived at the tech conference at 9 am to register and participate in a meet and great. Then, I attended the first workshop). You do not want to adopt this style of writing. Instead, be considerate of your reader and categorize information from the audience’s perspective – by the results you achieved, what you learned, what you observed, or the people you interacted with. Or, in our case, by vocabulary, dress code, behavior, and values.

Health and healing traditions of both the Black/African American population and White American populations persist even after their immigration to what is presently now called the United States of America. These health and healing traditions have diverse influences and are directly related to their geographical origins, which are related to their points of embarkation and final destination. Thus, Black/African Americans will have been influenced by their ancestors’ health and healing traditions from Africa, the Caribbean, and then the United States, while White Americans will have been influenced by their ancestors’ health and healing traditions both from Europe and then later on in the United States. (Note that these populations’ health and healing traditions were also influenced by indigenous populations in the Americas as well.) For this discussion in 600 words or more answer the following questions:

  • 1. Compare and contrast the use of healing traditions among Black/African-Americans with their White American counterparts.
  • 2. Select three unconventional healing traditions that Black/African-Americans and White Americans use to treat illness. How are these healing traditions different? How are they similar? What are the origins or influences of these healing traditions?
  • 3. Are the above healing traditions you discussed accepted by conventional or biomedicine? Why or why not? Are any of these therapies considered an alternative? If so, why and who considers it alternative?
  • 4. How do these healing traditions you discussed affect the individual? In your response, consider how these two populations define and regard the concept of health and illness and their concept of the human being (i.e., holism, reductionism, magico-realism, metaphysical etc.).

The curandero/a, a traditional healer, is a person who has met the health care needs of many people prior to the concept of a medical doctor (i.e., conventional or biomedical doctor). The concept of the curandero/a originated in the present-day south and southwestern United States and has origins in the traditional health practices of Mexico, Central America, and other Latin American countries, traditions which it has influenced in turn. Although the curandero/a is able to treat many types of illnesses, he/she is the only healer in the culture that can treat illnesses caused by supernatural forces. The curandero/a treats mal puesto (illnesses caused by witchcraft), mal de ojo (the evil eye), and susto (loss of spirit).

When translated into Western concepts these conditions seem at the least phony and in the extreme, quackery. However, conceptually speaking, these conditions have a parallel construct in Western ideas of religion and psychology. Spirituality and magico-realistic concepts of health and illness can and do explain these conditions which may be a far stretch to conceive for those with Western concepts of health and illness.

*Select one of these conditions that are diagnosed by a curandero/a. In 600 words or more, as best as possible, describe from the perspective of the curandero/a how a person contracts the condition and is affected by it. How is this perspective different from a psychologist/psychiatrist or a clergy person’s perspective? What implications would the curandero/a’s treatment have on the person’s treatment in general?

To complete this assignment please read Chapter 3 of your textbook.

Task 1: Discuss 3 types of questions you can start asking in interviewing. What is the purpose of each and why would they be a helpful skill for you to have?

Task 2: Jenna Frenzy is a new teacher at SJSU. After a rough first semester Jenna felt she struggled to connect with her students. She also had limited feedback in what assignments were valuable. Overall Jenna wants to improve both as a teacher and also improve the usefulness of her class. She has received her student evaluations but felt like there wasn’t a lot of information to be gained. Jenna emailed her class list and asked if any students would be interested in coming in for an exit interview. Three students responded.

For this task 2 please help Jenna draft some effective questions.

Re-write the following questions in a way where they would provide more feedback and information:

1. What do you think are the strengths of this instructor’s teaching?

2. What suggestions, if any, do you have to further improve the instructor’s teaching?

*Annotate your revision with some explanation of the changes.

For task 3 please help Jenna change the following multiple choice questions to become more open ended. *Annotate your revision with some explanation of the changes.
