In this primary and secondary source analysis, you are asked to summarize, synthesize, and above all analyze ONE weekly secondary source readings in conversation with one of the weekly primary source readings.  In this short paper, you should (1) unpack the arguments and methodologies of the scholar alongside the claims and evidence of the primary source,

(2) identify and explore which theme(s) that link the two readings you are writing on, and (3) conclude with your own reflections.

This is an interpretive short paper.  There is no single “correct” approach to it.  Instead, you will be graded on (1) the rigor of your analysis, (2) the organization and clarity of your essay (i.e. an overarching thesis, strong topic sentences, logically-constructed paragraphs, and proofreading), and (3) your use of evidence from the readings to bolster your argument while providing nuance to it.

You may explore any key theme(s) that you see link the readings together.  Avoid simply regurgitating.

Format: 4-5 pages, 1-inch margins, 12-point font. Times New Roman. Double-space.

For your final discussion in this course, think about all that you have learned based on research and experience from this course in the realm of business intelligence and analytics.  Based on this gained knowledge, one hot area these days is big data analytics.  Knowing that organizations like Google and or other major social media outlets like Facebook are collecting so much data, would you foresee these big data analysis methods to have any negative or positive future impacts.  If so, what types of emerging trends would you foresee coming to keep the positive uses of big data analytics and to eliminate those negative impacts where big data analytics are being misused.

How is Holden’s character revealed through his conversations, thoughts/feelings, and actions throughout the novel? (Prompt for thesis)

Your essay should focus on one character trait of Holden. Your thesis statement and each body paragraph should focus on that one character trait of Holden as it is relates to Holdens thoughts/feelings, conversations, and actions.

Use your work from your Body Bio assignment and the outline provided to help you develop your thesis and brainstorm the focus for each paragraph. The outline is not optional. Plan first.

The body paragraphs can be in any order that you see fit, but I suggest that you consider doing it chronologically based on the part of the book that you are analyzing.

Your essay should include the following:

An introduction with a well-crafted thesis statement as the last sentence. Highlight your thesis.

Body Paragraphs (3): Each body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence, textual evidence that is correctly integrated and cited, and clear “so what” moves explaining the significance of your evidence in relation to your thesis.

Topic sentence 1: identify the character trait of Holden as it is revealed by his conversations with others

Topic sentence 2: identify the character trait of Holden as it is revealed by his thoughts/feelings

Topic sentence 3: identify the character trait of Holden as it is revealed by his actions

   3.  A conclusion, or the “so what” move to your entire paper

Other parameters to remember:

Each quote needs to be from a different part of the book (beginning, middle, and end).

Do not use the phrase “this quote shows” to introduce your textual evidence. This is lazy and too formulaic.

Avoid referencing yourself or the reader to maintain a formal academic style of writing. You cannot use these words: I, I’m, we, us, me, you, your

You may not use a quote from one of our tone assignments we used in class.

As with any literary analysis, you should use literary present tense when discussing the content of literary works or other artistic creations.

o Provide your name, class, date attended and date written
o Provide the name of the event you attended or film you watched

  • Summary: 5 points (1 paragraph) Summarize the event you attended/film you watch. If it was a film, summarize the film’s plot and discuss important characters and/or themes. If it was a lecture, exhibit, performance or discussion, write about the key points or themes in the event, who spoke/performed/did art, and any definitions or concepts that were relevant to the event. Your summary should provide enough detail to demonstrate that you were present at the event.

  • Application: 8 points (1 paragraphApply what you saw/heard to the readings and concepts for this class. Specifically, tie what you learned by attending the event to something relevant you’ve learned from the class. It is not enough to simply say, “this is related to communication.” Instead, discuss specific concepts from the readings (use page numbers and citations) and make connections to the event and your own life.

Example: If you attend a poetry reading or performance, you could define “identity,” and discuss how the poet’s identity was revealed in their performance, or how your own identity resonated with the performer’s.

Avoid discussing general concepts such as paradigms, human communication, etc. • Personal Reflection: 5 points (1 paragraph) Discuss how this event impacted you

personally. Did you enjoy the event/film or was it challenging? Why do you think you felt this way? What did you learn, that you honestly didn’t know before? If you could tell someone ONE thing you got from this event, what would it be?

Many of you have asked for a list of documentaries that you can use for ONE of the possible Extra Credit Assignments.  Here is a list of films I’ve approved in the past, and they are available on a variety of streaming venues:

Reflection/Critical Evaluation of Your Learning Outcomes

Write a critical evaluation of your learning outcomes. In your response, consider:

1. The content of this class as they relate to Team Management and managerial decision making.

2. Based on the course content, discuss new skills you acquired from this class? How relevant are the new skills to your current and/or future profession?

3. How would you apply your new knowledge?

Using a salary calculator site (glassdoor.com, onetonline.org, etc), find an average salary for your desired profession ( which is Social Worker). Then use a paycheck calculator (e.g., link HERE  (Links to an external site.)for a payroll calculator) to estimate your monthly take home pay. Plan a budget for yourself for a month. Expenses should include rent, utilities, transportation, insurance, meals, entertainment, student loan payments, credit card payments, etc. Outline every expense you are calculating and justify the total allotted for each expense (i.e. average rent in Denver is $1500, if you budget $750 for rent, why? do you have a roommate?). Try to follow the 50-20-30 rule discussed in the video from this learning module.

Knowing that emergencies happen, say you have to take care of a sick family member for 5 working days and haven’t earned paid time off yet. Now do your monthly budget minus one week’s pay.

  • What changed for you when you had to recalculate your budget?
  • Does this change the way you feel about your occupation of choice? Why or why not?
  • What does it mean to you to give up certain things?
  • Beyond paycheck, what other benefits do you want to look for in a job?
  • What does it mean to you that your job may not monetarily provide you with everything you need or want? How will you resolve this?
  • Do you plan on continuing your education after your Bachelor’s degree? Will that help or hurt your financial situation? Long term/short term?
  • Did you see a difference between budgeting for life after graduation versus the way you currently budget?

Papers should be 2 pages double spaced. You may add an additional page outlining your two different budgets.

normal distribution is not a naturally occurring phenomenon, but the assumption of normality is a basic premise for many statistical analyses. If your data is not normal, or approximately normal, certain statistical tests cannot be performed because the results obtained may not be valid. Researchers often go to great lengths to perform tests on their data to determine if their data approximates a normal distribution within certain parameters and reasonable limits.

So, what is normality and how would you define normality?

  1. First, do some research on your own and look up three different reputable sources that define normality from a statistical perspective and combine those definitions into one, reasonable, comprehensive definition of normality. You can use your textbook as one source, so you will need to find two additional sources that define normality from a statistical perspective.
  2. Second, justify your definition by using the sources of information you’ve identified to support your definition of normality. Why is your definition better and more comprehensive than what is currently used in many textbooks?
  3. Finally, find an aviation-related research article that uses the assumption of normality, describe and summarize that study and the analyses used, and explain why the analyses may not be valid if the distribution was not assumed to be normal.
