  End of Term Paper: The paper requires you to reflect on a problem and to explain how some contrasting philosophical positions relate to it. The paper also requires you to take a critical stance. A paper assignment will be posted on Canvas well before the paper’s due date. This paper is of moderate length (1,800 – 2,000 words). (Choose one of the prompts below.)

Prompt 1: The problem: The relationship between the mind and the body The opposing philosophical positions: Cartesian Dualism and Physicalism (Use both Ryle and Putnam) – You will 1) Summarize both positions, 2) Explain the arguments for and against each opposing position (why does their position do a better job explaining the mind. You may use Nagel’s arguments in this part), 3) Offer your own assessment of the dialectic using your own examples and reasoning; which side you think offers a more plausible model of the mind and why? Prompt 2: The problem: What makes our actions moral? The opposing philosophical positions: Utilitarianism (use Bentham) and Kantianism. – You will 1) Summarize both positions, 2) explain how and when each position differs from one another with respect to their judgments of the moral worth of actions. Describe examples where they come to different conclusions. 3) Offer your own assessment of the dialectic by discussing which theory offers more or less plausible grounds for justifying our actions. You may end up siding with one over the other, agreeing with both, or disagreeing with both. Make sure to focus on the reasons why you came to this conclusion. Prompt 3: The problem: What aspects of our identity are fundamental to understanding what makes us a rational person? The (potentially) opposing philosophical positions: The Kantian account of personhood and the situated personhood of social epistemology. – You will 1) Summarize Kant’s account of what it is to be a person. Then, explain the importance of aspects of our situated identity in Mills’ and Fricker’s accounts of ignorance and responsibly listening to testimony. Offer your own assessment of each point of view and argue whether, with respect to understanding what we need to do in order to be rationality, these points of view are more likely to be incompatible or compatible. Make sure to focus on the reasons why you came to this conclusion 

Identify a research or evidence-based article published within the last 5 years that focuses comprehensively on a specific intervention or new treatment tool for the management of diabetes in adults or children. The article must be relevant to nursing practice.

Create a 6-8 slide PowerPoint presentation on the study’s findings and how they can be used by nurses as an intervention. Include speaker notes for each slide and additional slides for the title page and references.

Include the following:

1. Summarize the main idea of the research findings for a specific patient population. The research presented must include clinical findings that are current, thorough, and relevant to diabetes and nursing practice.

2. Provide a descriptive and reflective discussion of how the new tool or intervention can be integrated into nursing practice. Provide evidence to support your discussion.

You are required to cite to a minimum of two sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.

8. In at least one full page, double spaced,  explain your thoughts on the evolution of American democracy throughout the centuries. Provide discussion of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, and discuss U.S. policies both within the U.S. as well as policies abroad. Has the U.S. always supported and protected democracy? Explain.

1. For this problem, you will use the excel spreadsheet provided in your textbook. It is called “Ch13_hemoglobin.xlsx” and a link can found in Integrating Question 4 of BME 13.1
2. pen the Excel file CH13_hemoglobin.xlsx, which contains the data on oxygen saturation of hemoglobin from Figure 13.1 and a Hill equation model for the data. Change the values of k and n at the top of the sheet labeled “Hill equation” to find the best fit to the hemoglobin data, judging by the similarity of the two curves in the graph.

Once you have the spreadsheet open, alter the values of n and k until you find the best fit of the modeling data to the observed data. What values of n and k best model the observed data?

Here is an interesting observation about quorum sensing in squid: When V. fischeri cells are genetically modified such that they are no longer capable of producing light, the host squid cuts off the nutrient supply to these bacteria and purges them to the environment, in hopes of being able to gather different bacteria that can bioluminesce.
   1. Why would squid want to do this? Would this ability to purge bacteria be advantageous to the squid?
   2. How do you think the squid know whether or not symbiotic bacteria are able to produce light or not?
