End of Term Paper: The paper requires you to reflect on a problem and to explain how some contrasting philosophical positions relate to it. The paper also requires you to take a critical stance. A paper assignment will be posted on Canvas well before the paper’s due date. This paper is of moderate length (1,800 – 2,000 words). (Choose one of the prompts below.)

Prompt 1: The problem: The relationship between the mind and the body The opposing philosophical positions: Cartesian Dualism and Physicalism (Use both Ryle and Putnam) – You will 1) Summarize both positions, 2) Explain the arguments for and against each opposing position (why does their position do a better job explaining the mind. You may use Nagel’s arguments in this part), 3) Offer your own assessment of the dialectic using your own examples and reasoning; which side you think offers a more plausible model of the mind and why? Prompt 2: The problem: What makes our actions moral? The opposing philosophical positions: Utilitarianism (use Bentham) and Kantianism. – You will 1) Summarize both positions, 2) explain how and when each position differs from one another with respect to their judgments of the moral worth of actions. Describe examples where they come to different conclusions. 3) Offer your own assessment of the dialectic by discussing which theory offers more or less plausible grounds for justifying our actions. You may end up siding with one over the other, agreeing with both, or disagreeing with both. Make sure to focus on the reasons why you came to this conclusion. Prompt 3: The problem: What aspects of our identity are fundamental to understanding what makes us a rational person? The (potentially) opposing philosophical positions: The Kantian account of personhood and the situated personhood of social epistemology. – You will 1) Summarize Kant’s account of what it is to be a person. Then, explain the importance of aspects of our situated identity in Mills’ and Fricker’s accounts of ignorance and responsibly listening to testimony. Offer your own assessment of each point of view and argue whether, with respect to understanding what we need to do in order to be rationality, these points of view are more likely to be incompatible or compatible. Make sure to focus on the reasons why you came to this conclusion

Select a health care setting you want to focus on for your sustainability initiative (e.g., local hospital, veterans hospital, ambulance service, urgent care, nursing home, etc.). Analyze the setting you have selected and break it down to the main departments, employee roles, operating activities, etc. While doing so, brainstorm opportunities to reduce costs or eliminate waste while improving patient care or outcomes.Review the list of sustainable initiatives from the list below, and select one that you want to promote for your course project:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Lighting
  • IR scanning
  • Cogeneration
  • Kanban Inventory
  • Device exchange
  • CR pack reformation
  • Device reprocessing
  • Red bag waste reduction
  • Blue wrap recycling

Note: Ensure that the opportunity you select correlates with the setting you select.
Write a 525- to 700-word proposal of the sustainability initiative you want to promote at the health care setting you selected. Your proposal should:

  • Create a clear vision or mission statement that defines the scope of the initiative and would generate buy-in.
  • Define what outcomes you expect to achieve over time.
  • Be specific with what you can realistically deliver.

Consider the concepts covered in the course material and in anticipation of issuing a qualified audit report. Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

  1. Make recommendations on the requirements for the feasibility study and discuss the pros and cons for the design of SDLC with a recommendation for an optimal time frame for each stage.
  2. Make recommendations for the optimal computer operating system to address the emerging issue.
  3. Discuss the internal control considerations, and identify issues and risk mitigation strategies.
  4. Recommend an optimal revenue and expense cycle to capture transactions, including documentation requirements.
  5. Determine what future issues could impact the design of the SDLC and discuss the design features in your proposed SDLC that could be modified to address those issues.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

Discussion 1:

“Detecting Fraud” Please respond to the following:

  • Evaluate at what stage of the general accounting model it is easiest to commit computer fraud. Based upon your personal knowledge or work experience, describe the potential abuses that could occur and how they can be minimized.
  • Speculate on why adult males with advanced degrees commit a disproportionate amount of fraud, based on a profile of fraud perpetrators prepared by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Explain your position.

Discussion 2:

“Fraud Mitigation Techniques” Please respond to the following:

  • From the e-Activity, determine the theft red flags that would create the most opportunity for abuse and make recommendations for the types of controls that could detect various types of frauds. Be as specific as possible by providing illustrative examples to support your position.
  • Suggest why collusion between employees and management in the commission of a fraud is difficult to both prevent and detect. Discuss preventative measures or risk mitigation strategies to address this issue.

Discussion questions:

What are the benefits of this recommendation to public health officials, to the community and to other children?

  1. For this problem, you will use the excel spreadsheet provided in your textbook. It is called “Ch13_hemoglobin.xlsx” and a link can found in Integrating Question 4 of BME 13.1
  2. pen the Excel file CH13_hemoglobin.xlsx, which contains the data on oxygen saturation of hemoglobin from Figure 13.1 and a Hill equation model for the data. Change the values of k and n at the top of the sheet labeled “Hill equation” to find the best fit to the hemoglobin data, judging by the similarity of the two curves in the graph.

Once you have the spreadsheet open, alter the values of n and k until you find the best fit of the modeling data to the observed data. What values of n and k best model the observed data?

  1. Explain as best you can what the significance of n and k are. In other words, physically, what do n and k represent in the model? How are they connected to the actual hemoglobin molecule and how it works?
  2. Consider a lambda phage in which some specific alterations have been made to specific proteins. Predict, as specifically as you can, how the lysogenic/lytic switch would behave if the following changes were made:
    a. cI protein monomers no longer were able to bind to other cI monomers. In other words, cI protein cannot dimerize.
    b. Operator 2 is altered such that both cro and cI bind to this operator best.
    c. cro protein can no longer bind to operator 3, but it binds normally to the other operators.
    d. cI protein is altered such that when it is bound to operator 2 it no longer acts as a positive transcriptional regulator for PRM.
  3. Here is an interesting observation about quorum sensing in squid: When V. fischeri cells are genetically modified such that they are no longer capable of producing light, the host squid cuts off the nutrient supply to these bacteria and purges them to the environment, in hopes of being able to gather different bacteria that can bioluminesce.
    1. Why would squid want to do this? Would this ability to purge bacteria be advantageous to the squid?
    2. How do you think the squid know whether or not symbiotic bacteria are able to produce light or not?
