After reviewing this week’s readings and videos, identify an inequality within the labor market and conduct additional research by reading at least two scholarly articles on a topic of interest. Expand your consideration of inequalities beyond the traditional narrative heard throughout the media. Feel free to explore inequalities beyond those experienced by women, minorities, and immigrants if you find enough research to support a substantive discussion.

To provide context for an in-depth discussion, compose the following for the topic you selected:

· an historical background

· an overview of current research

· critiques of at least two current policies created to negate the inequality

Be sure to only share substantiated ideas using evidence from appropriate sources rather than relying on opinion

 NOTES from the Professor:

Diversity in the Workplace: Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation

One with our modern notion of work pertains to how we define work. Generally, the definitional bias is toward paid employment outside the home. By that definition, a great majority of the world’s work goes unrecognized. Schools rely heavily on volunteers, yet that is not paid and thus, not considered to be work. Domestic labor, primarily performed by women, is often not categorized as work because it is often unpaid. When the “what do you do” question comes up, too many women in our society respond by stating “I’m just a housewife or a mom.” Such a response clearly shows that these women have bought into the notion that work implies receiving a wage and it is somehow not what our culture defines as work. Chinese communist leader Mao Tse-Tung used the phrase “women hold up half the sky” to promote the equality of women as part of the overall vision of human equality under Chinese communism. Despite this belief, which has been globally adopted, women are not rewarded or acknowledged for most of the work they do. “Across countries, women make up a disproportionate share of the illiterate, the poor, the displaced, the elderly, the underpaid, the underemployed, and the underrepresented” (Henderson & Jeydel, 2007, p. i

Imagine you are a curator at your local city’s Museum of Art. You have been asked to organize a small exhibition of objects of art from the cultures of China, Japan, Africa, and the Americas; you will also showcase Islamic art. Your exhibition should include representative objects that highlight significant and essential ideas of each culture. You may plan to include actual objects in your exhibition, or photographs or models of larger structures or sculptures.

Survey your course textbook and reliable internet websites to locate two art objects from each of the following five cultures: China, Japan, Africa, the Americas, and Islam, that you would like to include in your exhibition. Your objects must date to the time period we are studying in this course (Prehistory -1300 CE). You will select a total of ten objects for display in your “Exhibition of World Art.”

Then, write a “museum label “for each object within a Microsoft Word document. The following should be on the “label” for each object:

  1. A photograph of the object
  2. Identifying information:
    1. Name of the artist (if known—otherwise, attribute the culture)
    2. Title of the work
    3. Date of the work
    4. Medium/materials used to create the work
    5. Current location
  3. A paragraph of 4-5 sentences describing why the object is representative of its culture and is culturally significant. Briefly explain why you have selected the object for display.

Finally, in a paragraph of 8-10 sentences, write a summarizing overview of your “Exhibition of World Art,” highlighting key similarities and distinctions between the objects you have curated. Imagine that visitors to your exhibition will read this overview as they enter your “Exhibition of World Art,” and provide them with any information or context they may need to fully appreciate the objects on display.

Offer a citation of your sources for each image and the information provided as appropriate.

Submission Details:

  • Submit your document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.

tell me IN YOUR OWN WORDS, but using specific examples to support your information, What have you learned in this course?   Of course, while this might sound like an “open ended” question, I would like you to reflect on specific case studies/topics that were of most interest to you, or those events that led you to reexamine your own world view.-The Boston Massacre.

-you must address in ESSAY format at least THREE of the following four questions in formulating your response:

1.Has your perspective toward one particular topic, event or era in American history as we have studied it changed at all?  If so, in what way has it changed? Rely on specific examples to support your position.

2.In your opinion, what are some of the most significant changes that occurred in the United States since the point of settlement through the era of American Civil War?   Are there still unresolved conflicts similar to those that existed from 1600 – 1865? And, if so, what are they?  Use specific examples from the course topics to support your response.

3.At the conclusion of this course, how do you see yourself as a student of United States history?  Do you feel differently about the history of the United States than when you began the course and, if so, in what ways? Be as specific as possible in your explanation.

Should people be allowed to vote in federal elections over the Internet? How might this be done? What advantages might such a reform have (e.g. increasing voter turnout, convenience)? What problems might arise (e.g. fraud)? Could the problems be solved? If not, would the benefits outweigh the possible problems?

  1. The term paper is expected to be 6-8, full double-spaced typewritten pages in length (the cover page, pictures, maps, diagrams and bibliography are not included in the page count) using a 12-point font, in an easy-to-read, typeface. Margins may be no larger than one inch.
  2. The cover sheet should identify your topic, and include your name, the date submitted, and your section instructor’s name.
  3. Each student will use a minimum of 5 scholarly resources. Encyclopedia (print or electronic) may be consulted, and included in your bibliography but cannot be one of your 5 resources.
  4. Every student’s paper must have a bibliography, prepared in APA or MLA format.
  5. The Internet should be searched for maps, plans, or photographic illustrations to support your narrative. A minimum of one Internet source must be included in your paper. However, Internet sources are limited to a total of three.
  6. The bibliography must contain a MINIMUM of:
    1. Two primary resources
    2. Three resources from the course
    3. One news source
    4. Two scholarly, academic journals

Argumentative Essay: Was Gregor Samsa to blame for his own fate in the story “Metamorphosis”?

Write an Argumentative essay of at least four or five fully typed pages (double spaced) that answers an ethical question. Formulate a thesis statement that targets a debatable topic or prompt in fiction. Remember, Argumentative writing includes a counterargument and a rebuttal.

According to the preamble to the U.S. Constitution, one (1) of the founding philosophies of the United States is that each person, citizen or not, is endowed with certain permanent rights. This philosophy extends even to people who have committed crimes that warrant prison sentences. Imagine that you are a commissioner on the Board of State Prison, and you are responsible for making recommendations regarding inmate rights and special circumstances. Use the Internet or Strayer University library (https://research.strayer.edu) to research costs that an inmate could incur if he or she chooses to challenge his or her confinement.

Write a 3-to 5-page paper in which you:

  • Analyze the legal mechanisms in which an inmate can challenge his or her confinement. Support or refute the cost of such challenges to the state and / or federal government. Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Analyze the grievance process from a state of your choice that inmates must follow while incarcerated. Critique the grievance process and whether it is enough to protect inmates’ rights while incarcerated. Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Examine the five largest groups of inmates with special needs that are discussed in your textbook. Prepare one recommendation for each group that management can use to meet the needs of the special need inmate. Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Determine whether the use of the death penalty violates offenders’ rights against “cruel and unusual punishment,” as guaranteed by the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Justify your response.
  • Use at least three quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other websites do not qualify as academic resources

BMGT 495 – Project 4: Strategy Selection, Implementation and Evaluation (Week 8)

NOTE:  All  submitted work is to be your original work. You may not use any work  from another student, the Internet or an online clearinghouse.  You are  expected to understand the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy,  and know that it is your responsibility to learn about instructor and  general academic expectations with regard to proper citation of sources  as specified in the APA Publication Manual, 6th Ed. (Students are held  accountable for in-text citations and an associated reference list  only).

Project 4 is due Saturday at 11:59 p.m. eastern time of week 8 unless otherwise changed by the instructor.

Purpose:

This  project is the last of four projects.  You will generate a pool of  alternative strategies, evaluate these alternative strategies, and  select the best strategy using the tools and concepts learned throughout  the course.  You will develop implementation plans, evaluative plans to  control the implementation process, and plan for post-evaluation  measures. You will also draw from previous business courses to develop  an understanding of how organizations develop and manage strategies to  establish, safeguard and sustain its position in a competitive market.

Skill Building:

In  this project, you are building many different skills including  research, critical thinking, writing and developing analytical skills  related to various financial analysis tools and strategy tools used in  business.   You will select optimal strategies, design how to implement  and evaluate the implementation process of the optimal strategies.

Outcomes Met With This Project:

  • Examine  the impact of ethical decision making, social responsibility,  stakeholder analysis, and corporate governance on organizations and  society
  • Utilize a set of useful analytical skills, tools, and techniques for analyzing a company strategically;
  • Integrate  ideas, concepts, and theories from previously taken functional courses  including, accounting, finance, market, business and human resource  management;
  • Analyze  and synthesize strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT)  to generate, prioritize, and implement alternative strategies in order  to revise a current plan or write a new plan and present a strategic  plan;
  • Evaluate the outcomes of identified strategies to determine their success and impact on short-term and long-term objectives.

Instructions:

Step 1:  Course Material and Research

Although  you are required to research information about the focal company, you  are also accountable for using the course material to support the ideas,  reasoning and conclusions made.  Course material use goes beyond  defining terms but is used to explain the ‘why and how’ of a situation.   Using one or two in-text citations from the course material and then  relying on Internet source material will not earn many points on an  assignment.  A variety of source material is expected and what is  presented must be relevant and applicable to the topic being  discussed.   Avoid merely making statements but close the loop of the  discussion by explaining how something happens or why something happens,  which focuses on importance and impact.  In closing the loop, you will  demonstrate the ability to think clearly and rationally showing an  understanding of the logical connections between the ideas presented  from the research, the course material and the question(s) being asked.

Step 2:  Research

In  completing the report, you will use the chapters in the eBook as a  guide and perform research on the same company as in Projects 1 and 2,  answer the required elements below in narrative form following the  steps.

Note:  Your  report is based on the results of the research performed and not on any  prepared documentation.  What this means is that you will research and  draw your own conclusions that are supported by the research and the  course material rather than the use any source material that puts  together any of the tools or techniques whether from the Internet,  for-pay websites or any document, video or source material.  A zero will  be earned for not doing your own analysis.

Library Resources

On  the main navigation bar in the classroom select, Resources and then  select Library.  Select Databases by Title (A – Z).  Select M from the  alphabet list, and then select Mergent Online.   You may also use Market  Line and should be looking at the focal company’s Annual Report or 10K  report.  You are not depending on any one resource to complete the  analysis.  It is impossible to complete a Porter’s Five Forces,  competitive analysis or OT by using only course material.

You should not be using obscure articles, GlassDoor, or Chron or similar articles.

Scholarly Research in OneSearch

To  search for only scholarly resources, you are expected to place a check  mark in the space for “Scholarly journals only” before clicking search.

Step 3:  Specific Company for All Three Projects

For  this project, each student in this course has been specifically  assigned by your instructor to write an independent report on one focal  company.  The assigned company must be used for all three projects in  this course.  You are not allowed to write the reports on any other  company different from the company specifically assigned by your  instructor.  Students who fail to use the specifically assigned  companies from the list or use an unapproved company will receive a zero  for the project.

The company that your instructor has assigned to you will be used for this project.

Step 4Preparation for the Project

Before  you begin writing the report, you will read the following requirements  that will help you meet the writing and APA requirements.

  • You  will be doing an analysis on the selected company.  When doing an  analysis you are not merely making statements that may be cited.   Instead, you will be supporting the statements made.  “Support” is the  process of explaining, discussing and analyzing “why” and “how,” which  is a higher level critical analytical skill that is required for this  class.  Support is needed to do well on this project.
  •  Read  the grading rubric for the project.  Use the grading rubric while  writing the report to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to  the highest possible grade.

Step 5:  How to Set Up the Project

Use this template to complete the project: Project 4 Template.   The document has to be written in Word or rtf.  No other format is  acceptable.  No pdf files will be graded.  Use 12-point font for a  double-spaced report.  The final product cannot be longer than 16  pages in length, excluding the title page and reference page.  Those  items identified in the implementation and action plans should appear  under the appropriate heading in the paper.  Do no use an Appendix.

Step 6:  Introduction

Create  an introductory paragraph.  The Introduction should clearly and  concisely convey the main points of the project’s requirements. Review  the following website to learn how to write an introductory paragraph: http://www.writing.ucsb.edu/faculty/donelan/intro.html.

Step 7:  Alternative Strategy Generation

  • To  generate a pool of strategies, you will look at the organization’s  business level strategy, corporate level strategy and global strategy.    Using the information and data collected from your research, and the  analytical outcomes from (a) external factor analysis in your Project 1  and (b) internal factor analysis in Project 2, you will generate a pool  of strategies.
  • Generate a minimum of three possible alternative strategies for the company;
  • Identify  and discuss cultural and organizational factors that should be  considered in analyzing and choosing among the alternative strategies.

Step 8:  Strategy Prioritization

  • Prioritize strategies and explain using the course material to support the reasoning.

Step 9:  Strategy Selection

  • Explain how to select the best strategy (or strategies);
  • Recommend  the best one or two strategies and long-term objectives among the  alternative strategies and explain why these strategies and objectives  are best;
  • Identify strategy recommendations using the following format for the formulation of strategies. Make sure you are thorough in your presentation.
  • View Strategy Content Guidelines.
  • Goal (The desired outcomes to be achieved)
  • Objective (Measurable milestone toward accomplishing the Goal)
  • Strategy (The approach used to achieve the Goal)
  • Tactic (A specific activity undertaken to implement the Strategy)
  • Review this resource to differentiate between Strategy Versus Operations and Strategy Versus Tactics

Step 10:  Strategy Implementation

  • Recommend procedures for strategy implementation;
  • Discuss  who, what and how to implement the selected strategy (or strategies) at  the corporate level, business-unit level, and functional level.

Step 11:  Strategy Evaluation

  • Discuss procedures for strategy review and evaluation;
  • Discuss  the appropriate evaluative measures (including who, what, when and how)   at the corporate level, business-unit level, and functional level.
  • Discuss  a corrective action plan (including who, what, when and how) at the  corporate level, business-unit level, and functional level.
  • Use frameworks and tools discussed throughout the course;
  • Support the reasoning and conclusions made.

Step 12: Conclusion

Create  a concluding paragraph.  The Conclusion is intended to emphasize the  purpose/significance of the analysis, emphasize the  significance/consequence of findings, and indicate the wider  applications that are derived from the main points of the project’s  requirements. Review the following website to learn how to write a  concluding paragraph: http://www.writing.ucsb.edu/faculty/donelan/concl.html

Step 13: Submit the Report in the Assignment Folder

Submitting  the project to the Assignment Folder is considered the student’s final  product and therefore ready for grading by the instructor.  It is  incumbent upon the student to verify the project is the correct  submission.  No exceptions will be considered by the instructor.

Report Requirements to Follow

In writing the report:

  • Use  the grading rubric while completing the project to ensure all  requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade.
  • Third  person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words  such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use  of “you or your” (second person writing).
  • Contractions are not used in business writing, so do not use them.
  • No  direct quotes except for mission statement and vision statement.  For  all other source material used in the analysis, you will not use direct  quotation marks but will instead paraphrase.  What this means is that  you will put the ideas of an author or article into your own words  rather than lifting directly from a source document.  You may not use  more than four consecutive words from a source document, as doing so  would require direct quotation marks.  Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.  If  more than four consecutive words are used from source documents, this  material will not be included in the grade and could lead to allegations  of academic dishonesty.
  • Use in-text citations and provide a reference list that contains the reference associated with each in-text citation.
  • You may not use books in completing this project.
  • Provide the page or paragraph number in every in-text citation presented.
  • You may not use Fern Fort University, Ibis World or any other for-fee website.

 Systems Analysis Case Study

Assignment Instructions

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to  explore the SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) through a Case Study.

Assignment Directions

1.  Choose any model of the SDLC and analyze the tasks at each stage as described below. Write at least one full paragraph for each stage of the SDLC including what it consists of and how you would apply that stage to the Case Study as described below.

Apply the Systems Development Life Cycle to the case described below.  Choose any model of the Systems Development Life Cycle and analyze the tasks you would need to accomplish at each stage of the Systems Development Life Cycle for that model.  You may use any of the SDLC models I gave you in the Lessons area in the Week 1 or Week 2 Lessons, or any other model of your own choice.  However, be sure to state which model you are using and provide a URL to the resource(s) you consulted on that model so that I can compare your analysis of the case study against the specific Systems Development Life Cycle model that you chose for your analysis.

For example, if the model you follow has a Systems Initiation phase, you should explain to me how you would conduct the initial investigation.  Who are the stakeholders that you would need to talk to?  What information would you need to gather to establish the requirements of the project and how would you gather that information?  What kind of feasibility study would you conduct and how would you do it?  How would you conduct your cost-benefit analysis in this stage?  What should be the end result of this stage?

You will have to identify the appropriate questions to ask yourself and to answer for each stage of your Systems Development Life Cycle, similar to what I have done for the Systems Initiation phase above.  Part of this assignment is for you to understand and explain to me what needs to be accomplished in each phase and how that would specifically look for the Case Study below.

You must use your own general knowledge about organizations to make reasonable assumptions appropriate to the case study, since you will not be given every possible detail of the case.  For example, who do you think the stakeholders would be?  Think about the students, the faculty, the staff and administration of a typical university, etc., and identify all of the possible groups of stakeholders.  You will have to think beyond the short description below and use your own general knowledge to complete the scenario and provide a full analysis of the Case Study.

2.  Include details like specific questions and examples as indicated below.

Be as detailed as possible in your analysis.  For example, if you are discussing how you would conduct a feasibility study, give a couple examples of specific questions you would ask.  For another example, if you are describing how the Systems Design phase applies to the case study, include a couple examples of design items relevant to this case, such as an Entity Relationship Model for part of this system, or an example of a use case for your system, or the details of one or more classes you would create in this system.  In this assignment, you are not required to create full design specifications, but you are encouraged to provide enough examples of design items to demonstrate your understanding of how you would approach the case study.  For example, instead of delineating ALL classes you would need to create, choose one class and develop it as fully as you can, to illustrate that you understand the basics of creating an object class (with a class name, some class attributes, and some appropriate class methods).

3.  Your paper should contain at least 2-3 pages and up to 1-2 pages of diagrams as indicated below.

Your paper should contain at least 2-3 pages of writing and you are encouraged to also provide up to another 1-2 pages of diagrams (which can be embedded throughout your paper, as appropriate).

Case Study

You are leading a team of software developers at a university.  The university’s President has approached you about developing a new information system for tracking student course registrations.  The system will need to contain information about students, faculty, and courses.  Students should be able to use the system to browse course descriptions and the schedule of classes for each semester, add classes to their schedule, and drop classes from their schedule.

Submission Directions

Use a Word file and name your submission like Week2CaseStudyLastnameFirstname replacing the names with your name.  Submit your file in the area below.
