DOCUMENTARY RESPONSE PAPERS GUIDELINES:

  • Paper must be typed — using only a 12-pitch Times New Roman      font.
  • Single-spaced with one-inch margins.
  • In total, the Assignment should not be more than five pages      in length.
  • Each submission must be numbered to  match and include all of the following five sections:

1. Identify and describe in detail the major issue addressed by the documentary.

2. Identify the primary individuals/groups involved in the documentary.

3. Identify the biases on the part of the filmmaker that you were able to identify in the documentary (and there will definitely be biases in each film). In other words, how did the filmmakers try to convince you of the position that the film supports? Look for appeals to logic, emotion, and prejudice.

4. Provide your personal assessment of the documentary; i.e.,

a. What did you like about the documentary?

b. What didn’t you like about the documentary?

c. What did you learn after watching the documentary that you did not know before watching it?

d. Was there anything that you saw or heard in the film that was unconvincing or which seemed out of place?

e. Did the film change your mind about any aspect of the subject that it presents? What information, argument or persuasive technique caused you to change your mind?

5. If the filmmakers were to ask how the film could be improved, what would you tell them? If someone asked you whether you would recommend this film, how would you respond?

Describe the characteristics of the aging process. Explain how some of the characteristics may lead to elder abuse (memory issues, vulnerability, etc.). Discuss the types of consideration a nurse must be mindful of while performing a health assessment on a geriatric patient as compared to a middle-aged adult.

Plan to write ~5 paragraphs for essay, or approximately 600-800 words. Each essay requires discussion of 3 examples (if you’re not using course content-based examples, you’ll quickly lose points). Use diverse examples from different readings. Prove to me you know and understand the content by using extremely specific examples from the readings, and by backing them up with your own analysis. Be sure you’re answering the final “why does this matter” questions at the tail end of the essay!

Deer camp as described by Mert Cowley highlights many of the social aspects of harvesting and growing food. Using the example of deer camp and two additional examples from the readings, discuss how food builds community and a social identity for groups of people. How do people create foodways, and foodways create people?

End-of-life care becomes an issue at some point for elderly clients. Even with the emergence of palliative care programs and hospice programs, most elderly people do not die in their own home as is their preference. What are the reasons for this trend? Discuss what you can do as a nurse to support your clients regarding end-of-life care in accordance with their wishes. Support your response with evidence-based literature.

Discussion 1

Part 1:

How can an early childhood professional link observation, assessment, and curriculum? Please give specific examples.

Part 2:

How has assessment changed over time in the field of early childhood and how has this impacted education?

Discussion 2

Choose one of the chronic illnesses discussed in this module and explain how personality, emotions, stress, coping styles, and/or lifestyle factors play a part in the development and management of the specific illness that you have selected. Please feel free to describe any personal experiences that you may have had with this topic. The illnesses that we will focus upon include Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Hypertension, Stroke, HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Type 2 Diabetes, and Type 1 Diabetes.

Discussion 3

Part 1:

For your Unit 5 Assignment, you will choose an issue or trend in early childhood. Discuss the issue or trend you have chosen for your Assignment and using the Library, locate a resource on this issue or trend and share in APA format.

Part 2:

It is important for early childhood professionals to behave in a professional and ethical manner each day. The National Association for the Education of Young Children has composed the following Code that you will use for your Unit 5 Assignment and this discussion.

NAEYC. (2005, April). Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment. Retrieved from http://www.naeyc.org/files/naeyc/file/positions/PSETH05.pdf

Using the issue or trend that you have chosen for your Unit 5 Assignment, use the “Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment” to discuss how professional ethics can affect this issue or trend and how.

Discussion: Social Comparison

People tend to compare themselves to others to gauge their intelligence, attractiveness, and success. Problematically, those who need a self-esteem and self-confidence boost may try to gain it through a downward comparison. In other words, in order improve their self-esteem and self-confidence, they might compare themselves to less intelligent, attractive, or successful individuals to make them feel better about their relative social standing. Consider the pervasive media images of female or male physical perfection. Western culture often overemphasizes a woman’s (and, to a lesser degree, a man’s) physical attractiveness as a measure of her (or his) cultural value. That is, western culture often conflates physical attractiveness with inherent goodness—a woman (or in some cases, a man) who is not physically attractive is somehow less good.

For this Discussion, you will analyze the development of self-concept from the perspective of downward comparisons and idealized images.

To Prepare
  • Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider how downward comparisons and idealized images of physical attractiveness impact the developing self-concept.
  • Also, consider whether this impact would be different across race and ethnicity.
By Day 4

Post how downward comparisons and idealized images of physical attractiveness impact the developing self-concept. Would this impact be the same across race and ethnicity? Support your post with references to social psychology theory and research.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two colleagues and explain how you might mitigate or resist the deleterious impact of social comparison as discussed by your colleagues. Support your response with references to social psychology theory and research.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the social psychology theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Walden Library and/or Internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your post and responses. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources.

You will choose and analyze a current issue/trend related to early childhood educational programming based on the research you have done on this topic. Using your research, and discussion you will write a 3–5-page paper.

Your paper should include a discussion on the issue or trend you chose and how this issue or trend has emerged and developed over time.

You will include an analysis of how educational theory has affected this issue or trend.

In addition, you will include an analysis of how professional ethics can affect this topic. This section needs to reflect ethical decision making that an early childhood professional would need to use based on the chosen topic. The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment is a document that outlines how early childhood providers can ensure that their work with children and families is always based on ethical practices. You will use this resource to discuss how the decision making with your topic is based on ethical practice guidelines.
