Who’s responsible for IT systems?

Identify an organization you are familiar with. Answer the following questions:

  1. How many IT systems are used? Just guess and also name at least two specifically.
  2. What organizational element is the technical lead for each one and who is the process or user representative for each one?
  3. Using one of the IT theories in the case, describe whether the IT system “works” (i.e., is useful, successful, etc.)
Instructions

For this assignment, you will be reading the case “Moss and McAdams Accounting Firm” on pp. 94–96 in your textbook. Once you have finished reading the case study, you will address the prompts below.

  1. Define functional, matrix, and projectized organizational structures, and list the strengths and weaknesses of each.
  2. Determine which organizational structure was being used in the two projects discussed in the case study, and explain how you came to that conclusion using evidence from the case study.
  3. Do you believe that the projects described in this case study could have been managed better using a different type of organizational structure? If so, which one do you think would have worked better, and why? If you believe that the organizational structure used was the correct one, explain why you think so.
  4. Describe what is meant by the technical side of a project and the sociocultural side of a project. Do you think Sands and Crosby were masters of both sides of their projects? Why, or why not?
  5. Do you believe that a better knowledge of the organization’s strategy would have improved the outcome of this case study? Why, or why not?

Your response should be a minimum of two pages in length and formatted as an essay. Citations and references are not required; however, if information from other authors is used, proper credit should be given.

Instructions

Throughout the duration of this course, you will be developing a project plan to present to your stakeholders. In order to make this a meaningful course, it is important that you select a project that aligns with your current work situation or a potential future work environment of interest to you. Please use the definition of a project outlined on pp. 6–7 of your textbook to help select your project. You might also want to read through the directions for the assignments in units III, V, and VI to make sure that you will be able to supply the necessary information for each unit assignment; each of these assignments will be a part of your final project plan that you will submit in Unit VII. In Unit VII, you will formulate a PowerPoint in which you will present your project plan to your stakeholders based on your work from earlier units.

For this assignment, you will be choosing the project for which you wish to formulate your project plan. Please click here to complete the template. Your completed document should be at least two pages in length.

In Unit 2, you have learned about three different types of distributions: Normal, binomial, and Poisson. You can take data that you collect and plot it out onto graphs to see a visual representation of the data.  By simply looking at data on a graph, you can tell a lot about how related your observed data are and if they fit into a normal distribution.

For this submission, you will be given a series of scenarios and small collections of data. You should plot the data or calculate probabilities using excel. Then, you will create your own real or hypothetical scenario to graph and explain.

Answer the following:

  • The mean temperature for the month of July in Boston, Massachusetts is 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Plot the following data, which represent the observed mean temperature in Boston over the last 20 years:
    199872199969200078200170200267200374200473200565200677200771200875200968201072201177201265201379201477201578201672201774
    1. Is this a normal distribution? Explain your reasoning.
    2. What is an outlier? Are there any outliers in this distribution? Explain your reasoning fully.
    3. Using the above data, what is the probability that the mean will be over 76 in any given July?
    4. Using the above data, what is the probability that the mean will be over 80 in any given July?
  • heatwave is defined as 3 or more days in a row with a high temperature over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Given the following high temperatures recorded over a period of 20 days, what is the probability that there will be a heatwave in the next 10 days?

    Day 193Day 288Day 391Day 486Day 592Day 691Day 790Day 888Day 985Day 1091Day 1184Day 1286Day 1385Day 1490Day 1592Day 1689Day 1788Day 1890Day 1988Day 2090

Customer surveys reveal that 40% of customers purchase products online versus in the physical store location.  Suppose that this business makes 12 sales in a given day

Does this situation fit the parameters for a binomial distribution? Explain why or why not?
Find the probability of the 12 sales on a given day exactly 4 are made online
Find the probability of the 12 sales fewer than 6 are made online
Find the probability of the 12 sales more than 8 are made online

Your own example:

  • Choose a company that you have recently seen in the news because it is having some sort of problem or scandal, and complete the following:
    • Discuss the situation, and describe how the company could use distributions and probability statistics to learn more about how the scandal could affect its business.
    • If you were a business analyst for the company, what research would you want to do, and what kind of data would you want to collect to create a distribution?
    • Would this be a standard, binomial, or Poisson distribution?  Why?
    • List and discuss at least 3 questions that you would want to create probabilities for (e.g., What is the chance that the company loses 10% of its customers in the next year?).
    • What would you hope to learn from calculating these probabilities?
    • Assuming that upper management does not see the value in expending the time and money necessary to collect data to analyze, make an argument (at least 100 words) convincing them that the expenditure is necessary and explaining some dangers the company could face by not knowing what the data predict

4th: IT SYSTEMS THEORIES – DRAFT

Assignment

Using an appropriate cover sheet, create a doctoral study Section 1 that addresses the following:

1.1 Introduction. Overview of the project – The impetus for the study.

1.2 The problem. A discussion on the organization or organizational elements that will be studied. Leadership, Management, Operations, some or all. What do they do, what is their purpose? What type of generic and specific processes do they execute in accordance with the material learned? What type of tools do they use in accordance with the material learned? A discussion of why there is a “perceived challenge/problem” in the organization (i.e., do we know there is a problem to be fixed or are we searching for one or more?). A discussion on the vision or desired end state after problem resolution – what will be more effective or efficient?

1.3 Areas to be analyzed. A discussion on which facets will be analyzed to include some or all of the following, which come from the Cases/SLP of this class:

1.3.1 The Organizational Structure, since processes and organizational structure are always intertwined. What type of structure is it? Provide a graphic of the org structure. Are there any indications of areas that need to be assessed in advance of inquiring through interviews or surveys?

1.3.2 The vertical processes within an org structure (Management). Provide a simple work flow of the situational awareness and decision-making processes. Are there any indications of areas that need to be assessed in advance of inquiring through interviews or surveys?

1.3.3 The horizontal processes within org structure (Product or Service Accomplishment). Describe the process in accordance with Case readings. Provide a simple work flow of the horizontal processes. Are there any indications of areas that need to be assessed in advance of inquiring through interviews or surveys?

1.3.4 The way processes are learned. Are there formal or informal learning methods for each process? What are they? Are they optional, are they mandatory, for some or for all? Are there any indications of areas that need to be assessed in advance of inquiring through interviews or surveys?

1.3.5 The IT systems (i.e., Enterprise Systems that support vertical or horizontal processes; decision making or product/service accomplishment). What are the tools that enable vertical (situational awareness or decision making) or horizontal process (service or product) accomplishment? Are there any indications of areas that need to be assessed in advance of inquiring through interviews or surveys?

The above would lead to the methodology section (i.e., what data for each of the above will be gathered, how will the data be gathered, from whom will it be gathered, how will it be analyzed?).
