This discussion has three parts.

Most people have a blend of leadership styles that they use. Some leaders are more flexible in applying a wide range of leadership styles, whereas others are more consistent and generally use just one or two preferred behaviors. Consider if two strong individuals begin a new company and discuss the following:

  1. If two diverse individuals, each having a different leadership style, were tasked with effectively co-leading an organization, what potential conflicts might occur between these different leadership styles?
  2. How will their personal leadership styles influence the organizational culture?
  3. How would you recommend that these two leaders work together most effectively?

Cultural Identity

What is culture? Is it synonymous with nationality? Can culture emerge from the intersection of multiple factors, such as gender identity, ability status, or language? Consider these questions as you prepare to describe your own culture.

For this Discussion, think about how you would identify your culture. Consider aspects of your identity such as your ethnicity, gender identity, religion, race, ability status, sexual orientation, or any other identifiers that contribute to what you would consider your culture.

By Day 3

Post a description of important aspects of your culture that an outsider might not know. Explain the information a social worker would need to know about your culture in order to effectively assist your family in the face of a pressing issue. Describe potential consequences of a lack of cultural awareness on the social worker’s part.

The term cultural competence denotes an integrative perspective on the cultures of other people. Individuals displaying higher levels of cultural competency tend not to promote their culture over others or vice versa—they instead demonstrate an interest in learning more about the customs, habits, and behaviors of those whose backgrounds are different from their own.

For this Discussion, review one of the case studies in the Readings and consider your knowledge of the client’s culture.

By Day 4

Post a description of your level of familiarity with the culture of the client. Describe at least two additional pieces of information you would need to gather from the client in order to best assist him or her.

Case Study:

Middle-Aged White Male With Anxiety

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The client is a 46-year-old white male who works as a welder at a local steel fabrication factory. He presents today after being referred by his PCP after a trip to the emergency room in which he felt he was having a heart attack. He stated that he felt chest tightness, shortness of breath, and feeling of impending doom. He does have some mild hypertension (which is treated with low sodium diet) and is about 15 lbs. overweight. He had his tonsils removed when he was 8 years old, but his medical history since that time has been unremarkable. Myocardial infarction was ruled out in the ER and his EKG was normal. Remainder of physical exam was WNL.

He admits that he still has problems with tightness in the chest and episodes of shortness of breath- he now terms these “anxiety attacks.” He will also report occasional feelings of impending doom, and the need to “run” or “escape” from wherever he is at.

In your office, he confesses to occasional use of ETOH to combat worries about work. He admits to consuming about 3-4 beers/night. Although he is single, he is attempting to care for aging parents in his home. He reports that the management at his place of employment is harsh, and he fears for his job. You administer the HAM-A, which yields a score of 26.

Client has never been on any type of psychotropic medication.

MENTAL STATUS EXAM:

The client is alert, oriented to person, place, time, and event. He is appropriately dressed. Speech is clear, coherent, and goal directed. Client’s self-reported mood is “bleh” and he does endorse feeling “nervous”. Affect is somewhat blunted but does brighten several times throughout the clinical interview. Affect broad. Client denies visual or auditory hallucinations, no overt delusional or paranoid thought processes readily apparent. Judgment is grossly intact, as is insight. He denies suicidal or homicidal ideation.

The PMHNP administers the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) which yields a score of 26.

Diagnosis: Generalized anxiety disorder

To prepare for this Assignment:

· Review this week’s Learning Resources. Consider how to assess and treat clients requiring anxiolytic therapy.

·

The Assignment:

Examine Case Study: A Middle-Aged Caucasian Man With Anxiety. You will be asked to make three decisions concerning the medication to prescribe to this client. Be sure to consider factors that might impact the client’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes.

At each decision point stop to complete the following:

· Decision #1:

o Which decision did you select?

o Why did you select this decision? Support your response with evidence and references to the Learning Resources.

o What were you hoping to achieve by making this decision? Support your response with evidence and references to the Learning Resources.

o Explain any difference between what you expected to achieve with Decision #1 and the results of the decision. Why were they different?

· Decision #2:

o Why did you select this decision? Support your response with evidence and references to the Learning Resources.

o What were you hoping to achieve by making this decision? Support your response with evidence and references to the Learning Resources.

o Explain any difference between what you expected to achieve with Decision #2 and the results of the decision. Why were they different?

· Decision #3:

o Why did you select this decision? Support your response with evidence and references to the Learning Resources.

o What were you hoping to achieve by making this decision? Support your response with evidence and references to the Learning Resources.

o Explain any difference between what you expected to achieve with Decision

#3 and the results of the decision. Why were they different?

Also include how ethical considerations might impact your treatment plan and communication with clients.

Note: Support your rationale with a minimum of three to five academic resources no more than five years in APA Format.

Final Assignment

Please answer ONE of the following questions in roughly six pages of your own original writing. Your answer must engage meaningfully with at least THREE readings from the course syllabus (with appropriate citations to the authors’ work).  Outside readings will not count toward the required three readings you must draw from. Your essay must include a bibliography at the end, listing the works you cited.

Option #1: What are the root causes of inequality under the current world order? Please discuss at least two, describing how they produce wealth for some people (or some groups, or some countries) and poverty for others.

Option #2: Are there universal human rights? Why or why not?

Option #3: What are the greatest threats to the current “liberal” world order? Please compare two and explain which, in your opinion, poses the greater challenge to the liberal order.

You do not need to submit a hard copy. I will use the time stamp on your electronic submission to verify that you turned your assignment in on time. Late assignments will lose a third of a grade for each day they are late.

Please remember that this is not a research paper. You will be able to answer the question based solely on the course readings. Citations to outside sources are permitted (as long as you cite them appropriately). But your answer should be based on the course readings to show that you understand the material we covered in class.

In our society as we deal on a daily basis with threats and opportunities we often don’t consider the events that got us to where we are today. We just try to work ahead and make something that is new or better than what we perceive we have now. In doing so we may be repeating mistakes from the past and we may be overlooking some success that has already occurred. Itis important to know the history of the type of venture that we are engaged in so that we can use our time and resources efficiently. This can certainly be said of police/citizen relations.

For this week’s assignment consider how American policing has evolved from its earliest beginnings until now. Analyze the memorable events and remarkable people who influenced the development of our system and describe why changes were made and how effective they have been. Critically examine the early founding principles of policing, such as those suggested by Sir Robert Peel and apply those principles to what is actually happening today.

Write a 2 page APA style paper.  Only the body of the paper will count toward the word requirement (title page and references are in addition to the 2 pages)

In your paper, cite at least 2-3 references using the APA style guide format for in-text citation.

Sociological Imagination

Watch the video Sam Richards: A radical experiment in empathy.

After watching the TED video and reading the section about the Sociological Imagination, take the viewpoint of an outside observer to examine your life.

First, pick one personal experience that was meaningful to you.

Second, pick a viewpoint different from your own. It can be another gender, race, nationality, or maybe someone from a different subculture. Finally, write about the three points listed below.

Write a 500 or more word paper discussing each assignment point listed below.

1.  Describe the personal experience as an outsider might describe it. (hint: depending on what you choose and the perspective you choose, this may require a little research)

2.  Describe how that experience was influenced by society structures (e.g. historical events, religion, or traditions)

3.  Finally review the four main perspectives and theorists related to those perspectives. What theory most applies to the personal experience you described and why do you think this theory applies?

Your paper must include a title sheet and at least 2 outside references.  You may use one reference from the internet but the 2nd reference must be from the Grantham University online library.  Only the body of the paper will count in your word requirement.

To help you begin your first paper, I have given you an example of a personal experience, the structure that helped to shape this event, and the theory that I would apply to it. Although what is listed below is an outline, I would like you to write in paragraph form.

Example:

Personal experience: wedding

Viewpoint: perspective of a person from the subcontinent India

1.  Description: Wedding itself was short, crowd was small, took place outside of hometown, and the bride wore white

2.  Social Structure: institution of marriage, marriage laws, and religious traditions

3.  What theory: functionalism

a.  Why this theory: functionalism supports social structure that is functional for society and marriage is functional for families and households
