You Make the Call

Situation 1

Jonathan Lugar, 17, had just finished helping his mom with a garage sale when it occurred to him that he might create a business to do the same for others and make a little money for college. The idea was to offer a service that would take the headache out of running a garage sale. Lugar would handle all advertising and sale setup, and his experience with other garage sales in the area would allow him to coach sellers on pricing so that items would actually be purchased. He figured he could charge $200 per job for sales that bring in $400 or less, but he and the seller would split sales above $400 on a 50-50 basis. Lugar believes the greatest value added from his services would be from his pricing insights, since most people rarely have a garage sale and thus have little idea about how much to ask for items. Careful pricing would make his customers happy, since they could maximize their sales and minimize the risk that they would be left with the very items they were trying to get rid of. In fact, Lugar planned to keep track of how much things sold for to fine-tune his pricing advice. He estimates that his startup costs would be minimal and would come mostly from the use of his truck and some fuel.

  1. Question 1 How would you classify Lugar’s startup idea? Is it a new market idea, a new technology idea, or a new benefit idea?
  2. Question 2 What was the source of Lugar’s startup idea?
  3. Question 3 Would you recommend that he give this startup concept a try? Explain your reasoning.

Prevention and Treatment Presentation

This week you will identify current prevention and treatment strategies used to address juvenile delinquency.

In the context of juvenile delinquency, treatment and prevention take on two different meanings. Treatment is reactive in nature, providing remedies for issues and conditions already present. Prevention, on the other hand, is proactive in nature, concentrating on eliminating or reducing the commission of certain conduct or the presence of certain situations.

Create an eight slide PowerPoint presentation which lists current prevention and treatment strategies. Include the following in your presentation:

  • List two current prevention strategies.
  • Discuss how effective each prevention strategy is in successfully rehabilitating the juvenile delinquent.
  • List two current treatment strategies.
  • Discuss how effective each treatment strategy is in successfully rehabilitating the juvenile delinquent.

Provide case studies/examples of each.

Note: This Assignment requires outside research. Use at least two credible sources and discuss how you evaluated the credibility of the resources used. You may consult the Library, the Internet, course materials, and any other outside resources in supporting your task, using proper citations in APA style.

The PowerPoint presentation should have the following characteristics.

  • Contains a title slide, introduction slide and references slide (these do not count in the eight slide requirement).
  • Bullets for your main points.
  • Pictures to support your presentation where applicable.
  • Research from at least two reliable sources to support the main message, including graphics.
  • Incorporate information from course readings, the course materials, or other library sources to support your discussion. Properly cite all sources of information by including in-text citations and a list of
    references.
  • Research and visuals are cited in APA citation format, both in-text and on a References slide. You need to quote material taken directly from a source.
  • The same standards for documenting sources that apply to an essay, apply to a presentation. Go to the
Academic Writer website for a digital library of APA Style quick guides and tutorials to refine your writing.

For #3 in the directions of the assignment, I am posting questions below for you to address.  Please cite references in your response. You may use the text from your paper to answer these questions.

 1. What was the primary question of your research?

2. After going through the paper development process, did you have to change your research question?

3. Which level of inquiry question (scientific, mathematical, cultural, or ethical)  was the most challenging to answer? (Include a paragraph from this section of your paper to show what you were able to include.)

4.  What is one simple to implement solution or improvement that you think would help the population impacted by your research topic?

5. In conclusion, what was one takeaway you gained from the research/one major point?

6. What is one question that you could develop/ask now to further investigate the topic you researched?

  • Review the article “The Pressure to Cover.” Pay particular attention to the concept of assimilation.
  • Review the “Assimilation and Ethnic Identity” article on the Asian Nation website. Focus on connections between assimilation and ethnic identity.
  • Consider one advantage and one disadvantage of assimilation from the perspective of an immigrant.
  • Think about one advantage and one disadvantage of assimilation from the perspective of a non-immigrant (i.e., citizens of a country or natives of a country).
  • Reflect on how assimilation can influence immigrants to redefine their identity.

The Assignment (3–4 pages):

  • Define assimilation in your own words.
  • Explain one advantage and one disadvantage of assimilation from an immigrant’s perspective. Provide an example for each.
  • Explain one advantage and one disadvantage of assimilation from a non-immigrant’s perspective. Provide an example for each. This question is asking you to detail how non-immigrants (i.e., citizens of a country or natives of a country) are affected or feel about immigrants’ assimilation.
  • Explain how the choice to assimilate or not to assimilate can influence immigrants to redefine their identity.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation.

T’Nazja Scott

In the future, my plans consist of becoming an Administrator or Director at a mental health facility. Because my background is in Social Work, I would like to still perform those duties, but on a larger scale. That said, I would love to become a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Every year, the organization has conventions that bring professionals together to tackle the ongoing war on mental illnesses.  In fact, they are the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building the lives of Americans (NAMI, 2019). When researching the organization, I was surprised to learn that they have over 15 locations in the state of Indiana.

 Celine Bass

Although I’m not currently working in the healthcare field and this is my very first course under the Healthcare Administration Master’s program, I have been in different supervisory and management roles of varying degrees for 30+ years. I may not be 100% sure of the direction my career will take as of this moment, but I do know that first and foremost, I will have to complete this degree. I have a hospital in very close proximity to where I live that offers volunteer opportunities. I believe that once I’m a little further along in my program, I will invest some time there as a volunteer to get a better feel of what the overall healthcare environment is like first-hand. I will also likely join an organization like the HCAA (Health Care Administrators Association) and attend some meetings/conferences to begin networking within the field. I’m very appreciative of Dr. Lee’s many T-shirts and baseball caps from all of the various organizations that he shared – they’ll provide a good point of reference moving forward! Lastly, if any of my classmates are in a position to hire another PG alum in a couple of years, look me up! 🙂

Good luck to everyone as you work toward your goals!

Celine

Writing a personal mission statement offers the opportunity to establish what’s important in your professional life. A personal mission statement is often an integral part of a job or graduate-level application as it provides reviewers with insights into an applicant’s strengths in, and philosophies regarding, the discipline.

The personal mission statement includes a description of your focus and goals, which can serve to provide direction for the next one to five years of your career. It can be used not only as a guide, but also as a tool of conscious reflection encouraging you to accomplish your professional objectives.  In the course of this assignment, you will evaluate potential career direction and satisfaction by reflecting on the following questions:

  • What do you hope to accomplish in the profession?
  • What positive and unique qualities do you bring to the profession?
  • How do you see your role in the profession evolving through time?
  • Why is the work you hope to do important?

Your Personal Mission Statement should be a minimum of 500 words, but it should not exceed 1000 words. Therefore, it is important that your writing be clear and concise and that your thoughts and philosophies are effectively communicated to your reader.

The Personal Mission Statement

  • Must be 500 words to 1000 words in length and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a header on each page with the following:
    • Personal Mission Statement
    • Student’s name
    • Student’s contact email
    • Date submitted
  • Must address the topic of the mission statement with critical thought.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
