In 2010, New York State passed a law that required its school districts to develop more stringent teacher-evaluation systems. Local school districts and their unions were assigned a task for specifying certain criteria of their new systems by January 17, 2013. New York City was going to receive benefits of $250 million in aid and another $200 million in grants if the agreement was reached on a new system, a 4% increase in state aid. However, as the January 17th deadline approached, Bloomberg and New York Teachers’ Union were not even close to reaching an agreement.

Imagine that your 9 year old daughter has just told you that her best friend has started her period. She wants to know when she is going to start hers. She also is confused about what a period even is.

Write out a potential script you could use to answer your daughter’s questions. Explain when she can expect to begin her period and describe what occurs during the menstrual cycle.

Death and grieving has been handled in many time periods, cultures and religious belief systems. Although only one biological body dies, there are many “role holes”(the roles that the deceased played in his/her life)  left by the death of that one person and they vary from individual to individual, time period to time period, culture to culture and religion to religion.  Discuss this in the context of a specific time period (other than the present), culture (other than your own) and religious belief system (other than your own).

You must use the assigned readings and videos to explore this topic. This means the articles in the Robben text, the additional readings in E-res and the occasional articles attached. Do not use your personal experiences in this essay. This essay should illustrate your understanding of the assigned course material. You can use different examples as you discuss a different time period, a different culture and a different religious belief system.

Your essay will be graded on your analysis and discussion of these issues.  This essay should be at leas5 pages 1 inch margins and doubled spaced).

 Instructions

This week, you have learned about t-tests and ANOVA and will apply what you have learned in the evaluation of several research scenarios. For this task, you will read each research scenario and answer the questions regarding each one.

Research Scenario 1
A researcher is interested in the effects of a new weight loss supplement. Participants in this double-blind study are randomly assigned to either a group that receives the new supplement or a group that receives a placebo. Participants are weighed before starting the program. After 6 weeks of taking either the new supplement or the placebo, participants return to the lab to be weighed.

  • Provide the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses.
  • Determine which type of analysis would be appropriate to answer this research question. Be specific and support your answer using the textbook or other course materials.
  • Name the independent and dependent variables used in the analysis. What are the levels of the independent variable?
  • Indicate the levels of measurement for each variable.
  • Describe the Type I error for this study.
  • Describe the Type II error for this study.

Research Scenario 2
A researcher is interested in whether certain memory strategies help people to remember information. This researcher employs students from a local college, and then randomly assigns them to one of three groups—the visualization group, the mnemonic technique group, and the rote repetition group. Participants in each group receive an hour of instruction regarding how to use the particular technique to remember lists of words. After the instruction, all participants are presented with a list of 60 words that they are instructed to remember. The words are presented one-at-a time on a computer screen. After the last word is presented, all participants are instructed to recall as many words as possible by writing them on a blank sheet of paper. All participants are given 10 minutes to recall the words.

  • Provide the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses.
  • Indicate which type of analysis would be appropriate to answer this research question. Be specific and support your answer using the textbook or other course materials.
  • Name the independent and dependent variables used in the analysis. What are the levels of the independent variable?
  • Indicate the levels of measurement for each variable.
  • Describe the Type I error for this study.
  • Describe the Type II error for this study

Research Scenario 3
A local manufacturing company is interested in determining whether their employees are as happy with their jobs as other employees. The manufacturing company asked the workers, who volunteered to participate, to rate their happiness at work on a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 was not at all happy and 10 was extremely happy. The manufacturing company found that the mean happiness rating for their employees is 7.3. In the general population of workers in the United States, the mean happiness rating is 6.

  • Provide the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses.
  • Determine which type of analysis would be appropriate to answer this research question. Be specific. Please support your answer using the textbook or other course materials.
  • Name the variables used in the analysis.
  • What are the levels of measurement for each variable?
  • Describe the Type I error for this study.
  • Describe the Type II error for this study

After viewing “After Darwin: Genetics, Eugenics, and the Human Genome” and “It’s Time to Question Bio-engineering” think about the issues and benefits that have come about from the technologies discussed.  What do you believe are the greatest advancements or benefits discussed, and what or where do you feel is the greatest potential for risk or harm? Give examples directly from the film/films to illustrate your understanding.

Just because you thought of an interesting research question and have a desire to conduct research does not mean that your research will automatically be supported by faculty or funded by an organization. In order to gain stakeholder approval, you must submit a research proposal. Much like an outline of a paper or a treatment of a movie script, the research proposal contains several parts that begin with a research question and end with a literature review. For this Assignment, you compile a research proposal that includes a research problem, research question, and a literature review.

For this Assignment, choose between the case studies entitled “Social Work Research: Couple Counseling” and “Social Work Research: Using Multiple Assessments.” Consider how you might select among the issues presented to formulate a research proposal.

Be sure to consult the outline in Chapter 14 the Yegidis et al. text for content suggestions for the sections of a research proposal. As you review existing research studies, notice how the authors identify a problem, focus the research question, and summarize relevant literature. These can provide you with a model for your research proposal.

Submit a 5- to 6-page research proposal stating both a research problem and a broad research question (may be either qualitative or quantitative). Use 6–10 of the most relevant literature resources to support the need for the study, define concepts, and define variables relevant to the question. Include a literature review explaining what previous research has found in relation to your problem and question. The literature review should also include a description of methods used by previous researchers. Finally, be sure to explain how your proposed study addresses a gap in existing knowledge.
