Item 2: Communication Management Plan

Weighting: 40%

Length: 2000 words

ESSAY CHOICE 1

Develop a communication strategy to resolve conflict in the work environment.

One of the key challenges for managers is to find adaptive communication strategies that create an open, enabling work culture. Management have asked you to develop a communication strategy to improve staff morale following a meeting highlighting entrenched conflict in the workplace. Management is supportive of positive resolution and reluctant to lose staff members.

Management perceive that the conflict is the result of:

• diversity issues inherent in the organisation (eg. racial, gender, sexual, religious issues)

• discrimination issues

• power issues.

The critical analysis of the work environment and the resultant communication strategy will demonstrate your understanding of:

• structural issues (mechanistic or organic structure or a hybrid of both)

• cultural ethos of the organization

• characteristics of prevailing work culture of the organisation (e.g. accessibility between, and adaptivity of, management)

• work relationship issues such as interpersonal and group communication

• ethical and legal best practice.

Instructions
For this assignment, select one of the following options:

Option 1: Imperialism
The exploitation of colonial resources and indigenous labor was one of the key elements in the success of imperialism. Such exploitation was a result of the prevalent ethnocentrism of the time and was justified by the unscientific concept of social Darwinism, which praised the characteristics of white Europeans and inaccurately ascribed negative characteristics to indigenous peoples. A famous poem of the time by Rudyard Kipling, “White Man’s Burden,” called on imperial powers, and particularly the U.S., at whom the poem was directed, to take up the mission of civilizing these “savage” peoples.

Read the poem at the following link:

After reading the poem, address the following in a case study analysis:

  • Select a specific part of the world (a country), and examine imperialism in that country. What was the relationship between the invading country and the native people? You can select from these examples or choose your own:
    • Belgium & Africa
    • Britain & India
    • Germany & Africa
    • France & Africa
  • Apply social Darwinism to this specific case.
  • Analyze the motivations of the invading country?
  • How did ethnocentrism manifest in their interactions?
  • How does Kipling’s poem apply to your specific example? You can quote lines for comparison.

A woman went to the emergency room for severe abdominal cramping. She was diagnosed with diverticulitis; however, as a precaution, the doctor ordered a CT scan. The CT scan revealed a growth on the pancreas, which turned out to be pancreatic cancer—the real cause of the cramping.

Because of a high potential for misdiagnosis, determining the precise cause of abdominal pain can be time consuming and challenging. By analyzing case studies of abnormal abdominal findings, nurses can prepare themselves to better diagnose conditions in the abdomen.

In this Lab Assignment, you will analyze an Episodic note case study that describes abnormal findings in patients seen in a clinical setting. You will consider what history should be collected from the patients as well as which physical exams and diagnostic tests should be conducted. You will also formulate a differential diagnosis with several possible conditions.

To Prepare

Review the Episodic note case study your instructor provides you for this week’s Assignment. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your Episodic note case study.

  • With regard to the Episodic note case study provided:
    • Review this week’s Learning Resources, and consider the insights they provide about the case study.
    • Consider what history would be necessary to collect from the patient in the case study.
    • Consider what physical exams and diagnostic tests would be appropriate to gather more information about the patient’s condition. How would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
    • Identify at least five possible conditions that may be considered in a differential diagnosis for the patient.

The Assignment

  1. Analyze the subjective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.
  2. Analyze the objective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.
  3. Is the assessment supported by the subjective and objective information? Why or why not?
  4. What diagnostic tests would be appropriate for this case, and how would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
  5. Would you reject/accept the current diagnosis? Why or why not? Identify three possible conditions that may be considered as a differential diagnosis for this patient. Explain your reasoning using at least three different references from current evidence-based literature.

A number of important resources supporting the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of culturally relevant instructional experiences are available online. Throughout this course, you have had many opportunities to view a number of such resources. This assignment encourages you to reflect on the key concepts presented in the course through the creation of a presentation that you can use in the future to support your teaching efforts. The goal is to showcase schools or programs representing what you have learned thus far regarding culturally relevant practices, creativity, and innovation. A plethora of options exists as you search for a model school or program. While the K-12 public school setting may be on the forefront of your mind, remember there are a variety of learning environments available, such as charter and private schools, technical programs, post-secondary education and training programs, schools and programs pertaining to the military, Sunday schools and other religious schools, and more. Therefore, expand your search efforts to gain a well-rounded perspective to share in your presentation. The resource you create can also be shared with colleagues (as well as the public in general) to advocate for implementing a more culturally-relevant instructional approach to professional practice.

A listing of free tools you might choose to use as you develop a website or presentation is presented in the Instructor Guidance. Each tool includes its own collection of help files and tutorials to support your creative endeavor. Similarly, there are numerous web-based tools that could be utilized to create an interactive presentation, such as Animoto, Knovio, Prezi, or PowToon. Use your creativity and try something new!

Review the Week Four Instructor Guidance for detailed assistance about preparing for and completing this assignment. Next, construct your assignment to meet the content and written communication expectations below. You will submit this assignment to two places in our course. First, submit the Assignment to Waypoint, as usual. Second, submit the Assignment to Doc Sharing. To access the Doc Sharing tool, select “Modules” in your left navigation menu. In the “Tools” module, you will find the Doc Sharing page.
