“Human service professionals are knowledgeable about the cultures and communities within which they practice. They are aware of multiculturalism in society and its impact on the community, as well as individuals, within the community. They respect individuals and groups, their cultures and beliefs” (Statement 18, Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals, 1996).
Cultural competency moves beyond simply embracing or tolerating diversity. A culturally competent human services professional operates effectively within a multicultural environment. For this Discussion, you explore your personal commitment to cultural competence. You also think about some concrete ways in which this commitment has influenced your work in this program and how it may influence your future practice in this field.
To Prepare for this Discussion:
- Review the web resource, “Counselors for Social Justice.”
- Review the web resource, “NASW Standards for Cultural Competence in Social Work Practice.”
- Review the web resource, “Cultural Competence.”
- Review the web resource, “Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals.”
- Review this week’s media, “Cultural Competency and Social Change.”
- Consider your commitment to cultural competence and how it has influenced your coursework and how it will influence your future practice of human services work.
With these thoughts in mind:
Post a description of your personal commitment to cultural competence. Then, explain how this commitment has influenced your work in the BS in Human Services program. Finally, explain how this commitment might influence your future practice of human services. Be specific and provide examples to support your response.

What do organizations such as Amazon, Apple, and Tesla have in common? They are known for being creative and innovative. While most people agree that organizations need to be creative and innovative to be successful, few people can concretely define these terms or articulate how to foster each within organizations. Fortunately, there is a growing body of research in these areas, which provides tangible, evidence-based leadership strategies for fostering creativity and innovation in organizations.
In this Discussion, you will consider recent research in the areas of creativity and innovation and identify specific leadership strategies to foster each within work teams.
To Prepare:
- Review the articles about creativity, innovation, and organizational adaptability in this week’s Learning Resources.
- Pay particular attention to definitions and indicators of creativity and innovation within teams.
- Consider factors that contribute to and detract from creativity and innovation. In addition, identify specific leadership strategies for fostering each within work teams.
By Day 3
Post a response to the following:
What does creativity and innovation “look like” in a team setting? Use specific examples from your professional experience or from what you have read about existing teams in organizations to support your response. What are the barriers to creativity and innovation in teams? How might a leader address these barriers to foster both within work teams?
Today’s organizations face increasingly complex problems that require a vast amount of expertise to solve. It is no longer realistic to expect that one leader will have all of the capabilities to quickly and adequately solve these problems. As a result, many organizations are moving away from traditional, vertical leadership structures, where decision making occurs from the top down, to shared leadership, where decision making is distributed among members of work teams. While shared leadership shows great promise, it is not without its challenges and may not be appropriate for every organization.
In this Discussion, you will consider whether shared leadership would be effective in your current or former workplace. In doing so, you will examine the pros and cons of shared leadership.
To Prepare:
- Read Chapter 14 in the Northouse text, Chapter 18 in the Sage Handbook, and the articles “Team-Centric Leadership: An Integrative Review” and “How Shared Leadership Changes Our Relationships at Work.” Consider the definition, characteristics, and pros and cons of shared leadership.
- Read the article “Antecedents of Shared Leadership: Empowering Leadership and Interdependence.” Think about situational factors that contribute to the effectiveness of shared leadership.
- Based on what you have read about shared leadership, consider whether it would be effective in your current or former workplace and why or why not.
By Day 4
Provide an argument for or against using shared leadership in your current or former workplace. Support your argument with the leadership literature and specific examples from your workplace.

Assignment Details
You have just been promoted from front-line supervisor to be one of the firm’s senior managers. During your business education, you learned that the primary role of a manager is to make good decisions. As a supervisor, you had frequently been making routine decisions, but you realize that decision making for the overall company can and will have far greater impact on the company and its employees.
Your boss, the chief executive officer (CEO), realizes that you do not have much practice in this higher level, decision-making process and has asked you to write a memo describing your understanding of how to make important decisions.
Your memo should address the following questions:
- Describe at least 3 criteria that would determine whether the manager is making good decisions. What should be done to better assure that you are making a good decision?
- In the realm of decision making, what are assumptions? Rather than use a dictionary definition, cite several specific assumptions that would go with any real-life decision you have made or have seen made at a company at which you have worked.
- Given the importance of proper assumptions, your boss asked you to assess the accuracy of certain business assumptions and what could you do to test or confirm the credibility of them. The following were major assumptions for each firm:
- An automobile manufacturer’s assumption that the demand for SUVs would continue because gas prices would continue to rise
- An airline’s assumption that there was a need for an airline that provided no added amenities
DISCUSSION 1 Why is staffing important? Who is responsible for it? Is it a function of personnel/human resource departments? What are some of the ways managers can adapt to changes in the external environment (shrinking work force, impacts of technology, etc.) to recruit and maintain quality personnel?
DISCUSSION 2 The effectiveness of the performance appraisal is often a topic of debate. Read the Forbes article, “Eliminating Performance Appraisals (Links to an external site.)”. Based on the content of the article, identify three key points related to the author’s position on the elimination of performance appraisals. From the view of the manager and using the concepts found in our text, prepare a rebuttal to the article discussing each of the key points you identified and define the reasons why the performance appraisal should not be eliminated. Develop a potential solution to the performance appraisal debate, keeping in mind the intent of the appraisal and the desired outcome for both the organization and the employees. Support your solutions with a minimum of one outside resource.
In a four- to five-page paper (excluding the title and references pages), discuss the relationship between human resource planning activities and the organization’s strategic development and implementation. Describe the eight elements of the staffing process. Examine the relationship between the eight elements of the staffing process and the four activities related to human resource planning.
Based on the information in Chapter 9: Case: Concussion and the National Football League, review the human resource planning process and the previous readings from Chapter 6. Explain the relationship between the four activities of human resource planning and the organization’s strategic planning, development, and implementation.
Your paper should include in-text citations and references for at least three scholarly sources, in addition to the text, and be formatted according to APA style.
A woman went to the emergency room for severe abdominal cramping. She was diagnosed with diverticulitis; however, as a precaution, the doctor ordered a CT scan. The CT scan revealed a growth on the pancreas, which turned out to be pancreatic cancer—the real cause of the cramping.
Because of a high potential for misdiagnosis, determining the precise cause of abdominal pain can be time consuming and challenging. By analyzing case studies of abnormal abdominal findings, nurses can prepare themselves to better diagnose conditions in the abdomen.
In this Lab Assignment, you will analyze an Episodic note case study that describes abnormal findings in patients seen in a clinical setting. You will consider what history should be collected from the patients as well as which physical exams and diagnostic tests should be conducted. You will also formulate a differential diagnosis with several possible conditions.
To Prepare
Review the Episodic note case study your instructor provides you for this week’s Assignment. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your Episodic note case study.
· With regard to the Episodic note case study provided:
o Review this week’s Learning Resources, and consider the insights they provide about the case study.
o Consider what history would be necessary to collect from the patient in the case study.
o Consider what physical exams and diagnostic tests would be appropriate to gather more information about the patient’s condition. How would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
o Identify at least five possible conditions that may be considered in a differential diagnosis for the patient.
The Assignment
1. Analyze the subjective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.
2. Analyze the objective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.
3. Is the assessment supported by the subjective and objective information? Why or why not?
4. What diagnostic tests would be appropriate for this case, and how would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
5. Would you reject/accept the current diagnosis? Why or why not? Identify three possible conditions that may be considered as a differential diagnosis for this patient. Explain your reasoning using at least three different references from current evidence-based literature.
Remember you MUST complete a FULL abdominal exam.
Please write this up as a narrative so that you are able to correctly explain your analysis.
