Directions for the Ethnography of Communication:

This paper is a combination of academic research and ethnographic research. Select a Subculture/Community of Practice/Linguistic Community to research throughout the semester and gather your finds and discuss them in relation to the concepts from our text and class. Many aspects of the paper follow Hyme’s SPEAKING. 

 

The paper should be 8-10 pages in length (not including the Works Cited page ) with standard margins and 12pt. Font.  Please proof read your paper to avoid losing points based on typos or spelling errors.  You will also submit a brief presentation about your community.

 

You should have at least four additional academic sources (not including the text book) referenced in your paper regarding the group you selected or linguistic and anthropological theory. Be sure to cite your sources (APA) and include a works cited page. (Suggested groups: different ethnic groups, sports groups, subcultures like gamers or magicians, online forums, communities of practice. etc.) 

 

Content should include:

Introduction- explain the subgroup you selected and the reasons for selecting this group. Give a brief history to provide background to the group.

 

Context includes: Discern Cultural Models/Culture of groups studied. Include information on all the following aspects of context. Where is the group you are studying, location (i.e. classroom, in-laws house, friend’s house, etc.)

 

Participants- who are the people in your study group, relation to you and relation amongst your study group (i.e. friends, employer, employee, stranger, family)

Goal of interaction- friendly exchange, acquiring information, etc.

Speech Acts- explain the various speech acts that took place and the relevance to the information from the text and class. 

 

Address how variation exists within the sub-culture/speech community

differences in situations

differences in social distinctions/statuses w/in communities 

variation reflected in speech performance

gender, age, class, region, ethnicity, occupation- all factor in– 

 

Conclusion- what did you learn from this experience? How did you incorporate the emic and the etic perspectives throughout your research? What ethnolinguistic methodologies did you use

 

Description

The needs of the pediatric patient differ depending on age, as do the stages of development and the expected assessment findings for each stage. In a 500-750-word paper, examine the needs of a school-aged child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old and discuss the following:

Compare the physical assessments among school-aged children. Describe how you would modify assessment techniques to match the age and developmental stage of the child.
Choose a child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Identify the age of the child and describe the typical developmental stages of children that age.
Applying developmental theory based on Erickson, Piaget, or Kohlberg, explain how you would developmentally assess the child. Include how you would offer explanations during the assessment, strategies you would use to gain cooperation, and potential findings from the assessment.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Imagine that you are a high school counselor. You want to introduce a program that enables students to take the VIA youth survey, which is a version of the strengths survey designed specifically for children between the ages of 10 and 17. Students will learn about their individual strengths and how they can apply them in areas of their lives (e.g., social relationships, cases of bullying, life challenges, peer groups, education, family relationships, or future career directions). Be sure that it includes the following:

Introduce positive psychology standards and findings of the importance of character strengths.
Explain the VIA survey. Include how it was created and what strengths it assesses.
Discuss how the VIA survey has been adapted for adolescents including those who identify as LGBTQ.
Do character strengths apply to those who have a different background and/or culture from the heteronormative White male? How do character strengths and virtues apply to those who identify as LGBTQ? Do the same signature strengths and virtues apply?
Evaluate the potential value of your program to address bullying issues.
Include specific examples of how strength knowledge might have a positive impact on specific aspects of students’ lives during adolescence.
Support your work with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.
About Strengths and Virtues in Positive Psychology
Millions of people worldwide have taken the VIA (Values in Action) Survey in 196 countries, which has been validated across diverse cultures. This survey helps to identify positive character strengths, talents and skills. This classification of character traits was originally developed by Seligman and Peterson (2004). As you will learn through your readings, it contains 24 strengths and six virtues. These six virtues include: 1) wisdom and knowledge, 2) courage, 3) humanity, 4) justice, 5) temperance, and 6) transcendence.

Individuals flourish when they apply their character strengths because they improve their engagement across domains like school, home, and social relationships. Using your character strengths facilitates resilience and flourishing, the qualities of PERMA and subjective well-being. There is an emphasis on inclusiveness and diversity; cultural differences are embraced and respected in the application of these virtues. They are strengths of character and have been shown to be related to health and well-being. Those who use their character strengths are able to overcome any challenges and ask for help. Instead of giving up, those that use their character strengths see the hard times as challenges to overcome. These individuals are excited by challenges instead of shutting down. They use their creativity to solve problems. Those that are curious ask many questions to discover new knowledge in order to overcome problems, being open-minded to change.

Written Assessment: Appraisal and Proposal
This assessment allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of reviewing academic literature, appraising it in the context of research, and also how this existing research may inform both policy and new research.

The rationale for assessment design:
There are a few sections to this assessment. All of these sections mirror the elements of proposal needed for public health professionals working in research, or with epidemiology, or indeed in a more commercial context.

There are some elements of this assessment that should be familiar to you – you usually have to introduce what it is you are presenting – like an introduction.

The rationale for different elements of this assessment can be summarised as follows;

Critical appraisal is a fundamental part of public health – we need this as clinicians and researchers and also need this to convey the academic literature to lay audiences. This assessment determines that you use a critical appraisal tool to assess your journal article. Remember that this is a KEY component of a systematic review, for those of you who are considering this type of research.

Protocol development is a part of research in the broad sense. For those of you who are not intending to become academics (!! this is hard for me to believe!!) , these skills are also important in monitoring and evaluation, and in any role that requires applying for funds. For those of you who are keen to pursue a research career – good news!! The protocol element of this assessment is exactly what is required from prospective PhD students.
