Please write at LEAST three paragraphs for each question.

  1.  When friends of new parents ask, What is the babys sex? they could be asking two things: (a) Does the baby have the biological genitalia of a male or female, and/or (b) Will your baby follow the social role of a male or female? Describe the major differences between the terms sex and gender. When YOU ask this question, what are you really asking?
  2. Discuss some of the ways that puberty can adversely affect mental health and social functioning (with peers and parents). Explore this further with regard to individuals who experience atypical sexual development.
  3. In what ways has American culture impacted your understanding and expression of your own sexuality? Given some introspection, do you see any of this as potentially problematic and/or productive? Explain.

About two double-spaced pages, using 1 margins and a readable 12-point font such as Times New

Roman. That is about 500 words.

  1. Identify a problem about language and/or translation that the text seeks to address. (For example:
Why do people speak different languages? or How do we deal with a single word that has multiple
meanings? This problem should provide the title to your response paper.
  2. Quote from the text to show how the author addresses that problem, making sure to explain what
the quote means in your own words (paraphrase). Find a second example if you can, and do the same.
  3. Apply the authors position to a present-day example. This should be your own idea.
  4. Offer a counter-example, a challenge, or a counter-argument against the authors position. Does
a later quote in the text undermine the position you identified in step 3? If so, your counter-argument can be found within the text, so give another quote and explain it in your own words, as above. The best papers will engage with at least two substantial quotes from the text (see assessment rubric).
  5. End with a question that your discussion of this problem has left you with. If so, then what? Keep your questions open-ended: that is, not answerable with fact, or by direct and immediate reference to the text. You are not expected to answer this question. Just show that the process of thinking through an idea and its counter-arguments has brought you somewhere.

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS:

  • You dont need to give a long introduction to the work/author/date/context. Assume that your reader is another member of this class. Introduce your problem in one or two sentences and move on.
  • Write in clear and precise language, using a voice that you feel comfortable with. If you are not
confident that you understand the meaning of a word, dont use it–or look it up. We are not trying to
    produce stuffy, pretentious writing.
  • If you feel confined by the academic voice, you can get creative by addressing the author directly as if
you were in debate with them. For example: Mr. Nabokov, you claim that the sounds of poetry are not
translatable. You say, QUOTE. But I want to offer this other perspective…
  • There is no need to consult outside sources. If you do consult outside sources, make sure to cite them properly in a footnote to avoid plagiarism.

FORMAT:

  • No title page or Works Cited page is needed. Give page-number citations from the Reader in parentheses after the quote, like this:
Nebrija argues, I dont like being quoted (Reader 61).
  • If you dont have the Reader and are using the PDF, give page-number citations according to the original edition, like this:
Nebrija argues, I dont like being quoted (Nebrija 491).
  • Use grammar-check and spell-check programs before submitting the paper. These are amazing tools, and the free versions are fine. Proofread your work. Not taking the few minutes to do this sends us a signal that you dont care to make your writing friendly to your reader.

This week, your assignment has two parts: Part 1 is to develop an outline of headings; Part 2 is to complete the Synthesis Matrix.

Part 1.

Develop an annotated outline for the Signature Assignment based on the description of three levels in this weeks introduction:

  1.  A framework of headings
  2.  The inclusion of supporting citations
  3.  The inclusion of supporting paraphrased comments

While this outline may still change for the final paper, the time you spend developing this outline with the supporting research will be rewarded by making the writing of the paper predictable and in line with APA style and formatting requirements. Include an APA-style title page before the outline and a complete references section following the outline.

Length: 2-3 pages, not including title and reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 8 scholarly resources

Part 2.

Submit your completed Synthesis Matrix to show how the sources align with the topics of the paper.

Length: 1-3 pages, depending on a number of resources and length of comments

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and APA standards.

Instructions for Summary / Response Essay

Summary/Response Essay

Assignment Description

For this essay, you should select an article from the “Readings” folder in this unit and summarize/respond to it in a formal essay. The summary/response essay asks you first to summarize the main points of the article and to respond to those points by agreeing, disagreeing, or agreeing with some but not all of the arguments made in the article. You should include evidence (from the article, from your own reasoning, from examples, from experiences, etc.) to support your response.

Due Dates

Please refer to the calendar due dates. Please remember the peer review is a separate grade and has separate due dates.

Purpose and Learning Objectives

The purpose of writing a response paper is to encourage you to read actively and to evaluate the selected articles critically. While it is possible to read an article just once and gain an understanding of the main idea, much of the depth and nuance of the article will only be discovered after multiple readings.  Moreover, your grasp of the ideas and concepts presented in the article will remain superficial until you apply those ideas and concepts in your own writing. As you write, you should practice making clear claims about the material youre writing about and should practice supporting those claims with evidence from the text and from your own reasoning about the subject.

Minimum Requirements

  • 600- 900 words  (approx. 2-3 pages)
  • An interesting and informative title
  • MLA format with in-text citations and works cited page
  • An introductory paragraph that tells readers what article you are responding to and that includes a thesis statement
  • One or more paragraphs that summarize the article
  • One or more paragraphs that respond to the article
  • A conclusion paragraph that wraps up the main ideas in the essay

You should not expect to earn a grade higher than a 60% if you do not meet the minimum requirements.

Process for Completion

  1. The first step in writing a good response paper is to actively read the article assigned. Active reading means consciously identifying the thesis, purpose, audience, and tone.  It means determining what main points the author is trying to convey with his or her article.
  2. Next, it might help to construct an outline or graphic organizer that will help you visualize the claims and the evidence supporting those claims. Once you have a firm understanding of the article, start formulating your response by asking questions:
    1. What do I really think about this topic? Why do I think that?
    2. Do I disagree with any points being made? Why?
    3. Do I agree with any points? Why?
    4. Can I think of additional examples or evidence that support or refute the author’s claims?
    5. Can I connect something in the article to my own personal experience?
    6. Can I apply the ideas presented in the article to some other subject?
  3. At this point, you should start to formulate your response. Once you have an idea of what you want to say, start drafting your essay.
    1. The introduction should clearly identify the author and article youre summarizing. It may include a bit of brief summary to show what the main point of the article is. It should include a thesis statement that presents your response to the article.
    2. The body paragraphs should begin with a summary of the article that you’ve chosen (one or two paragraphs). Be sure to accurately represent the ideas and arguments from the source. Next, you should develop your response (between one and three paragraphs), usually with a statement of agreement or disagreement, followed by your reasons, examples, and evidence. Remember that the purpose of a response paper is to add your own voice to the mix, to join the conversation.  I want to read your reactions, your interpretations, and your opinions. Take this opportunity to develop your own voice.
    3. The conclusion paragraph should reinforce the ideas you stated in the essay.
  4. Once youve drafted your paper, go back and review how youve organized your paragraphs (do they have topic sentences?) and integrated evidence (all quotes should be seamlessly incorporated into your own sentences).
  5. When youre happy with your draft, you should complete the peer review process to get feedback on your writing.
  6. After you have read the feedback provided by your peers, continue revising and editing your draft.  You might find that some comments are more helpful than others. You are not obliged to take anyone’s advice, but you should at least consider every suggestion. When you are comfortable that the essay is in good shape, upload it to eCampus. The final draft will automatically be sent through “Safe Assign,” which is an originality checker used to help identify plagiarism.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using someone elses words or ideas without giving credit and is a serious academic offense.  It can range from:

  • Turning in a paper any part of which you did not write,
  • Cutting and pasting a paper together from various sources without attributing the sources correctly,
  • Changing a few words but basically keeping most of the words and sentence structure of the original,
  • Using the ideas of another without giving credit to the person who originally had the idea.
  • Using the exact words of the source without using quotation marks even if you give the name of the source.

Refer to the syllabus for consequences of plagiarism in this class. For more information, see http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/
