of your choosing from one literary work from the unit means, and why it is 

significant, 2.) include a defense of this argument with compelling evidence

The co-leadership model for group facilitation holds many potential advantages for group development. The film you viewed in this unit presents a group that is co-led as an example.

  • Identify a segment in the film Leading Counseling Groups with Adults: A Demonstration of the Art of Engagement (linked in Resources) in which the group leaders work together to develop and process an intervention. Include the time frame of the exchange so others can locate the segment.
  • Describe how their interventions deepen the experience for the group members.
  • Evaluate the overall co-leadership relationship using the assigned readings for support.

 

Assignment

By learning more about the complex interactions that contribute to problems or issues in society, you can better understand your role in creating positive social change. For this assignment, you will explore and research a complex social problem using your sociological imagination.

To prepare for this Final Essay:

  • Be sure to complete all the Interactive Units before writing the essay. Consider the ways that social institutions contribute to the formation of societys values. For example, how is the social institution that you selected portrayed in the media? What current problems or issues is the institution facing?
  • Create a list of the possible social problems that you could explore in your final essay. You might want to do some brainstorming on the topic by listing the institution and the number of ways that it contributes to the transmission of societys values. Describe both your selected institution and the social problem that you would like to address.
  • Use the feedback that you received on your Rough Draft Essay Worksheet to inform your construction of this Final Essay.

The Assignment:

Compose a 3- to 5-page essay in which you:

  • Describe the theoretical perspective (functionalist, conflict, or interactionist) to which you relate the most and why.
  • Briefly describe how the social institution (e.g., family, religion, education, or government) you selected in the Rough Draft Essay Worksheet Assignment and briefly describe how this social institution contributes to the transmission of societys values.
  • Identify and state a problem or issue related to that social institution, and use at least one theoretical perspective to describe the social problem.
  • Conduct research to learn more about the problem. Use the information that you find to create evidence to explore the social institution and social problem in the context of a changing society.
  • Describe at least one recommendation that you would make to the social institution to encourage positive social change. How could the social problem be better addressed?

Refer to at least two specific examples from the Interactive Units or Required Resources. Be sure to use evidence to support your claims by citing your source. An example of an acceptable citation: According to the Culture Module of Interactive Unit 2. Please include an APA Style cover page and reference page (these do not count toward the length requirement).

Submit your Final Essay.

 If you have you been involved with a company doing a redesign of business processes, discuss what went right during the redesign and what went wrong from your perspective. Additionally, provide a discussion on what could have been done better to minimize the risk of failure. If you have not yet been involved with a business process redesign, research a company that has recently completed one and discuss what went wrong, what went right, and how the company could have done a better job minimizing the risk of failure.

Your research paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Be approximately 4-5 pages in length, not including the required cover page and reference page.
  • Follow APA6 guidelines. Your paper should include an introduction, a body with fully developed content, and a conclusion.
  • Support your answers with the readings from the course and at least two scholarly journal articles to support your positions, claims, and observations, in addition to your textbook. The UC Library is a great place to find resources.
  • Be clear and well-written, concise, and logical, using excellent grammar and style techniques. You are being graded in part on the quality of your writing.

The second essay in EN 104 is an academic argument with research documented in APA format.  In this assignment, you will begin that process by creating an essay draft.  The draft allows you to develop your growing skills by using the principles of argument to advocate for a position on an issue.  You will use evidence to persuade your reader to see your point of view.

Estimated time to complete: 8 hours

  • Conduct research and write an argument essay about a change you would like to see in your community or workplace. 
    • This essay will:
    • be 5-7 pages, typed and double-spaced. 
      • the cover page and references page do not count toward the 5-7 pages. 
    • includes 4 at least 4 sources for this essay.  At least two of those sources need to be scholarly sources from the online databases available through Herzing Universitys library.  
    • follows APA conventions for documentation and formatting. 
      • APA guidelines will be covered in class, but you will need to refer to additional resources while writing, revising, and editing your essay.  Purdue Universitys Online Writing Lab (OWL) or the APA manual are good resources for APA. 
  • A successful academic argument essay will meet the following criteria:
    • Introduction/background: The reader is drawn in by an attention-getter at the beginning of the introduction. Necessary background information is provided.  There is a transition that leads from the attention getter to the thesis.  The thesis statement takes a clear position on a specific, controversial issue.
    • Development: Three to five clear reasons/main points support the thesis. Main points are developed with evidence that may include personal experience, observations, and research with at least two sources from the Herzing University library.  At least four sources are incorporated into the text to support or challenge main points.  Source information is clearly introduced and commented on.  Opposing views are anticipated and addressed.
    • Organization: The essay follows the classical argument structure discussed in class and on the assignment sheet. Ideas are organized and presented clearly by using strong topic sentences, concluding sentences, and transitions.
    • Presentation and Style: The essay is formatted according to the guidelines in the syllabus and APA documentation guidelines. All sources are cited appropriately in text and on a references page. Tone and vocabulary used are appropriate for college-level academic writing.  Writing is concise with varied sentence structure.
    • Grammar and Mechanics: Errors in spelling, grammar, or mechanics are minimal and minor. The reader is not distracted by errors.

Write a 500-750 word paper reflecting upon your professional  developmental progress as a result of this course. Consider including  the following:

  1. How have your beliefs changed during the practicum? What    counseling approaches studied during your coursework at GCU now seem    more or less relevant and applicable as a result of the direct    client contact you had at your practicum site? You may cite sources    from your Counseling Theories courses or other classes.
