Choose a piece of nature writing (Carson, Sullivan, Williams, or Kolbert) AND a piece of theory (Davies, Garrard, Nixon, or Bennett). Use a specific passage from the theory to help you think critically about, explain, and analyze the meaning, context, or assumptions at work in a passage from the environmental non-fiction. For instance, does the non-fiction demonstrate a principle of the scholarship? Does the scholarship help explain something interesting in the non-fiction? You may also do the reverse, using a specific passage from the nature writing to draw out, explain, challenge, or clarify something from the scholarship.
Write a SINGLE paragraph that draws a relation between the two passages. Your task is to use your critical thinking and authorial voice to put these two quotes ‘into conversation’ with each other. Comment on how and why the relationship you highlight between these quotes adds to our ongoing class conversation about the idea of wilderness, place-attachment, or environmental ethics. QUOTE THE TEXTS (of course) in your commentary.
As I mentioned in class, this is NOT a compare/contrast essay where you explain that these authors agree/disagree. This is also NOT an essay where you say that Sullivan is an example of Bennett’s ideas, etc. This is a chance to show how one text changes the understanding of another, by extending, by contradicting, or some other means of intertextuality.
