There are a lot of opinions out there about birth order and a great deal of research has been done on the topic. According to psychologist Kevin Leman, the following descriptions are predictive of birth order.
Leman characterizes first born children as natural leaders reliable, conscientious and perfectionists. Often labeled aggressive, they tend to be model children who have a strong need for approval from anyone in charge. Over half of U.S presidents were firstborns.
Middle children tend to be opposite of their older siblings. Due to the fact that middle children often feel that the world pays them less attention, they tend to be secretive and not openly share their thoughts or feelings. Middle children can usually read people well, they are peacemakers who see all sides of a situation, and they are independent and inventive.
Last born children tend to be the most social and outgoing and are the most financially irresponsible of all birth orders. They want to have a good time.
Last born are often considered the baby of the family, who never completely grow up.
While there has been a lot of research to support the above descriptions, many contest that when conducting longitudinal studies, these predictions are no longer accurate.
What has been your all s experience? Do you fit the label? What about your siblings or parents?
