We continue to examine leadership in different settings – sports teams, the workplace and social movements. The Civil Rights movement was a social movement that challenged traditional power – institutions and politicians that had the power to punish (sanction) and the authority to interpret and the law (referent power). Please see p. 445 for definitions of empowerment, and how this differs from more traditional types of power.

There are five dimensions of empowerment: Self-efficacy, Self-determination, Personal consequence, Meaning and Trust.

Choose one or two of these qualities to discuss. How did Martin Luther King and his closest advisors develop these qualities among individuals, as they empowered individuals and communities to stand up for the right to vote?

The individuals portrayed in the film are historical figures. You may discuss an individual, or the movement as a whole, as you discuss how people made meaning, gained trust in collective action – whatever you choose to discuss.

Think about how this particular kind of power, empowerment, can affirm an individual’s potential. Of course, the civil rights struggle is fighting structural racism to affirm the rights of all people. You may discuss this as well.
