  • Description
  • Paul Johnson uses the life of daredevil Sam Patch to explain the social and economic changes of the Market Revolution. Johnson writes “Sam Patch…was an angry and not particularly admirable victim of the huge social process that was creating places like Pawtucket and Paterson and granting money and respect to people like Timothy Crane” (46). What was the Market Revolution? Using this quote and the rest of Johnson’s book, explain why Johnson thinks Patch was a failure. To conclude, explain whether or not you agree with Johnson’s assessment of Patch. Make sure to use specific details and quotes from the book to support your argument.
