If you quote or paraphrase anything, then a citation is required to avoid plagiarism. If there is plagiarism on any part of your response, you will earn a ZERO for the ENTIRE exam. It is not required to add quotes or paraphrases to earn full credit. Outside research is not permitted….you may only use your lecture notes and textbook assigned for the course.  If you use outside sources, then you will earn a zero for the question. There are NO MAKE-UPS for the exam. All exam essays are due before midnight on Thursday of the exam week. No late exams will be accepted.

 

Essay Instructions:

 

Address the following prompt in a well developed essay. Start with a thesis statement. Use specific pieces of historical evidence to address the prompt and build analysis. Vague essays without specific details and evidence will not earn many points. Worth 150 points.

  1. Identify, describe, and assess the causes of the American Civil War and the critical events leading up to the first shots fired at Fort Sumter in 1861. Then, explain whether or not the American Civil War was avoidable or preventable? Why? Be specific in your use of historical evidence.

 

Maximum pages: five, double-spaced. I will stop reading your essay at the end of page five! Pick the BEST evidence to make your arguments and prove your thesis.
